The U.S. District Court Clerk’s Office for the District of Massachusetts is currently accepting applications to fill a full-time position for an Official Court Reporter. The position is based in the District Court in Boston, Massachusetts. The United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Boston, has an opening for an Official Court Reporter. Official Court Reporters serve at the pleasure of the Court and must comply with the requirements of the Judicial Conference of the United States, The Court Reporter’s Manual published by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, and policies of the Clerk’s Office. Periodic travel to offices throughout the district is required.

The Official Court Reporter records verbatim testimony by Computer Assisted Technology (CAT) for civil and criminal court proceedings and provides Real Time reporting services. At the request of a party or by order of the Court, the Court Reporter provides transcripts within the time frames and cost requirements of the Judicial Conference. Additionally, Court Reporters are responsible for determining that billings and formats comply with Judicial Conference requirements.


Court Reporters must adhere to the requirements of the Court’s Court Reporter Management Plan of this District and maintain accurate, legible records which are subject to audits. This position involves completing record-keeping forms, documenting the information contained in reports, as well as maintaining and safeguarding records until their disposition according to statutory requirements and Judicial Conference policy.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least one year of prime stenographic CAT court reporting experience in the freelance field of service or in other courts or a combination is required. Four years of experience is preferred unless the candidate can demonstrate extradentary skills with less years of experience.
  • Qualification by testing for listing on the Registry of Professional Reporters of the National Court Reporters Association or passed an equivalent qualifying examination. Professional associations (other than the NCRA) and state license examinations may be acceptably equivalent to the NCRA testing, but the requirements for the examinations at the time of administration will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis;
  • A Certificate of Merit from the National Court Reporters Association, a requirement for Level II. Realtime certification required for Level III. Realtime certification and Merit Certification required for level IV (level V available only to court reporter's hired prior to October 11, 2009);
  • Realtime Court Reporter experience, demonstrated proficiency, and access to CAT transcription equipment;
  • Successful completion of the Certified Realtime Reporter Examination offered by the National Court Reporters Association or having passed an equivalent qualifying examination is preferred;
    Supply of all necessary personal equipment and software (e.g. computer, a display, write, cable and Realtime software);
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or meet the exceptions to the statutory restrictions on hiring non-citizens to work in the federal government in the continental United States.
  • The successful candidate also should possess: strong interpersonal skills; maturity; responsibility; poise; tact; good judgment; initiative; ability to work harmoniously with others and effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Commitment to public service.

FBI Background Investigation

Summary The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas is a public service organization focused on providing exceptional customer service to the court, members of the legal community and the general public. Currently, we are seeking an innovative and experienced individual to serve as an Official Court Reporter for the U.S. District Court. There are seven offices within the Eastern District of Texas: Beaumont, Lufkin, Marshall, Plano, Sherman, Texarkana, and Tyler. Responsibilities Official Court Reporters must be familiar with and adhere to all requirements of the Court Reporter Management Plan for the district. They work as part of a team of reporters on a regular tour of duty that requires their presence in the courthouse during core working hours of a minimum of eighty (80) hours per period. Position Overview
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Official Court Reporter. Court reporters are responsible for recording court proceedings verbatim in court and in chambers, for producing requested transcripts, and for filing required transcripts electronically in CM/ECF with the Clerk of Court.

This position is primarily responsible for court reporting services in Raleigh. Note the Eastern District of North Carolina encompasses 44 counties with divisional offices in Elizabeth City, Greenville, New Bern, Raleigh (headquarters), and Wilmington, and this position, in addition to other court reporters, provides court reporting services to four district judges and four magistrate judges. The court reporter must be available to perform court reporting services for any judicial proceeding within the Eastern District of North Carolina; travel, including some overnight lodging, is required.

Representative Duties
The Official Court Reporter performs duties and responsibilities which include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Performs court reporting services for any judicial proceeding as may be required.
  • Demonstrates the ability to record verbatim testimony of courtroom proceedings.
  • Maintains accurate, legible records which are subject to audits and/or available to read back any or all portions of the court records.
  • Provides transcripts and copies, at the request of a party or the court, within time frames and cost requirements established by the Judicial Conference of the United States.
  • Determines that billing and formats comply with Judicial Conference requirements.
  • Backs up daily transcripts to an internal shared drive within twenty-four (24) hours of the proceeding. Provides and maintains personal equipment to include telephone and Realtime equipment which must be compatible with court equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, an individual must have at least one year of prime stenographic Computer Aided Transcription (CAT) court reporting experience in the freelance field or in other courts or a combination thereof; qualified testing for listing on the Registry of Professional Reporters of the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) or passed an equivalent qualifying examination that certifies 180 wpm literary, 200 wpm jury charge and 225 wpm testimony. The successful candidate must possess excellent organizational and communication skills to permit the production of transcripts within strict time limitations, work well under pressure, and be willing to work as part of a team of reporters under the direction of the Clerk of Court in fulfilling the needs of all judicial officers of the court. A judicial employee must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

Strong preference will be given to candidates who are a Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR) and who possess a Certificate of Merit from the NCRA. Applicants may be subject to testing of Realtime capabilities, using personal equipment, during the interview process. A court reporter with federal court experience is preferred.

Conditions of Employment
Applicants must be United States citizens or lawful permanent residents actively seeking citizenship. Judicial Branch employees are considered "at will" employees and are not subject to the employment regulations of competitive service. Salary will be based on experience and qualifications. Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) for payroll deposit is required.

This position may be required to work in excess of a regular eight-hour day or to work an altered work schedule to support the operations of the court, without additional compensation.

Health Insurance

The Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHB) offers employees more than ten (10) health plan options to choose from that provide comprehensive medical benefits including preventative care, doctor's office visits, hospitalization, surgery, and prescription drugs with no pre-existing condition limitations. Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS)

Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)

Vacation/Sick/Other Leave

To assist eligible employees with maintaining a healthy work/life balance, the Judiciary offers a generous amount of leave through a combination of federal holidays, annual (vacation) leave and sick leave. Full time employees with less than three (3) years of service accrue approximately 2.5 weeks of annual leave per year. This increases to 4 weeks from years 3-14, and up to 5 weeks each year when an employee has reached 15 years or more of service. In addition to annual (vacation) leave, full time employees also accrue approximately 2.5 weeks of sick leave each year and are given eleven (11) paid federal holidays.

The North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts seeks a certified Court Reporter-Resident, records and transcribes verbatim, court trials, hearings, and conferences in Superior Court, reporting to the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge or their designee. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of: English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; court rules, regulations, procedures, and operations; legal and various specialized terminology; and transcript format and style.

Skill in: Transcribing notes rapidly and accurately; and using court reporting hardware.

Ability to: Take dictation rapidly and accurately for extended periods of time at a speed sufficient to have attained the required certification; accurately transcribe notes; type a volume of material over a sustained period of time within deadlines; maintain confidentiality; and represent the court in a manner consistent with its decorum.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
