**Crisis Intervention Specialist**
Location: Rockford, IL
**Position Summary**
The Crisis Intervention Specialist will work alongside first responders to provide on-site crisis intervention, de-escalation, and stabilization services for adults and children experiencing or who are at risk for experiencing a behavioral health crisis. These intensive supportive services are time-limited, designed to prevent additional behavioral health crises and mitigate adverse health outcomes. Specialists are expected to work on-scene, conduct mental health assessments, engage in de-escalation, make appropriate referrals, and conduct follow-up services as needed.

**Responsibilities**
The Crisis Intervention Specialist will perform duties including, but not limited to:
+ Perform all work in a manner consistent with the National Youth Advocate Program's mission, values, and philosophies.
+ Provide live crisis support for those at imminent risk of suicide, those in need of immediate resources; or those in need of emotional support.
+ Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, or transportation services for parents, youth, and adults.
+ Establish rapport with crisis hotline callers in a non-judgmental and calm voice.
+ Assess risk through assessments including the "Ask Suicide-Screening Questionnaire."
+ Contact first responders if the caller is at imminent risk of suicide.
+ Schedule appointments for intake and outpatient follow-up care.
+ Provide transportation when needed.
+ Administer groups and training for support staff.
+ Completes all follow-up care and home visits within the required time limits.
+ Reassess safety and provide referrals for behavioral health and other needed services.
+ Performs other duties as requested.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's degree in social work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field from a CSWE accredited college or university.
+ Previous experience in crisis response, substance abuse, juvenile justice, advocacy, mental health, or equivalent.
+ An awareness or acceptance of the NASW Code of Ethics and is an effective and efficient communicator.
+ Is committed to serving the underserved with dignity, compassion, and respect.
+ Proficient use of desktop and laptop computers, smart phones and tablets, printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.

Job Summary

Caltech Counseling Services engages with graduate and undergraduate students who are scientifically-minded, culturally diverse, and engaged in a rigorous academic environment. Our tight-knit campus allows for flexibility and strong relationships within Student Affairs to provide intentional, quality support to meet the unique needs of each student. Counseling Services provides psychological services and crisis management for students as well as outreach, consultation and training to the community at large. Counseling Services is part of the Student Wellness Services organization, and works closely with medical professionals to consult and collaborate on complex cases involving the intersection of physical and mental health.

The Assistant Director and Crisis Intervention Coordinator will function as an integral part of the Counseling Services clinical team by providing individual and group counseling, coordinating crisis response including the on-call schedule, and supporting the day-to-day operations under the supervision of the Director of Counseling.

The incumbent will also participate in campus-wide initiatives to support suicide prevention, increase resilience among the student population, and work collaboratively with colleagues to support the mission of the Institute. Additionally, the incumbent will demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of the culture and priorities of a science and technology-focused research institution, as well as show a clear commitment to the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

This is an Organizational Critical position. In the event of an emergency on campus, an employee designated as organizational critical is expected to report to campus as soon as possible to assist in division/department response and recovery efforts.

Essential Job Duties
  • Assists the Director in planning, administration, management, and evaluation of the Counseling Services team, services, and operations.
  • Assists with supervision of clinical team members.
  • Serves as consultant to faculty, staff, students, and parents.
  • Manages post hospitalization and medical leave processes in coordination with the Deans' offices.
  • In collaboration with the Director, writes and reviews policies and procedures for the center.
  • Coordinates professional development opportunities for clinical staff.
  • Facilitates weekly peer supervision/case review teams.
  • Oversees peer-chart review process and student feedback mechanisms
  • Serves as point person for communication with ProtoCall after-hours service; organizes the after-hours on call rotation, and serve as back-up consultant to the Director for clinicians-on-call
  • Provides individual and group counseling for culturally diverse graduate and undergraduate students for a wide range of psychological concerns
  • Works collaboratively with other mental health and medical professionals within Student Wellness Services and local community providers
  • Consults as needed with the CARE team and campus partners, including coaching to faculty, staff, and students on issues related to students of concern
  • Develops and delivers training, consultation and outreach to faculty, staff, and students on a variety of issues related to suicide prevention, crisis management, mental health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Collaborates on shared initiatives within Student Affairs through effective working relationships with Residential Experience Programs, Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity, Athletics, ISP, and other campus constituents who support graduate and undergraduate student experiences.
  • Serves as liaison to student affairs office and/or undergraduate housing community (e.g. undergraduate or graduate residential community, the Equity Office, Center for Inclusion & Diversity, International Student Programs, etc.) and coordinates liaison relationships between other staff members and campus partners.

Basic Qualifications

Caltech Counseling Services engages with graduate and undergraduate students who are scientifically-minded, culturally diverse, and engaged in a rigorous academic environment. Our tight-knit campus allows for flexibility and strong relationships within Student Affairs to provide intentional, quality support to meet the unique needs of each student. Counseling Services provides psychological services and crisis management for students as well as outreach, consultation and training to the community at large. Counseling Services is part of the Student Wellness Services organization, and works closely with medical professionals to consult and collaborate on complex cases involving the intersection of physical and mental health.

The Assistant Director and Crisis Intervention Coordinator will function as an integral part of the Counseling Services clinical team by providing individual and group counseling, coordinating crisis response including the on-call schedule, and supporting the day-to-day operations under the supervision of the Director of Counseling.

The incumbent will also participate in campus-wide initiatives to support suicide prevention, increase resilience among the student population, and work collaboratively with colleagues to support the mission of the Institute. Additionally, the incumbent will demonstrate an appreciation and understanding of the culture and priorities of a science and technology-focused research institution, as well as show a clear commitment to the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

This is an Organizational Critical position. In the event of an emergency on campus, an employee designated as organizational critical is expected to report to Campus as soon as possible to assist in division/department response and recovery efforts.

Essential Job Duties
  • Assists the Director in planning, administration, management, and evaluation of the Counseling Services team, services, and operations.
  • Assists with supervision of clinical team members.
  • Serves as consultant to faculty, staff, students, and parents.
  • Manages post hospitalization and medical leave processes in coordination with the Deans' offices.
  • In collaboration with the Director, writes and reviews policies and procedures for the center.
  • Coordinates professional development opportunities for clinical staff.
  • Facilitates weekly peer supervision/case review teams.
  • Oversees peer-chart review process and student feedback mechanisms
  • Serves as point person for communication with ProtoCall after-hours service; organizes the after-hours on call rotation, and serve as back-up consultant to the Director for clinicians-on-call
  • Provides individual and group counseling for culturally diverse graduate and undergraduate students for a wide range of psychological concerns
  • Works collaboratively with other mental health and medical professionals within Student Wellness Services and local community providers
  • Consults as needed with the CARE team and campus partners, including coaching to faculty, staff, and students on issues related to students of concern
  • Develops and delivers training, consultation and outreach to faculty, staff, and students on a variety of issues related to suicide prevention, crisis management, mental health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Collaborates on shared initiatives within Student Affairs through effective working relationships with Residential Experience Programs, Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity, Athletics, ISP, and other campus constituents who support graduate and undergraduate student experiences.
  • Serves as liaison to student affairs office and/or undergraduate housing community (e.g. undergraduate or graduate residential community, the Equity Office, Center for Inclusion & Diversity, International Student Programs, etc.) and coordinates liaison relationships between other staff members and campus partners.
  • Assists in crisis response to individuals and/or groups during campus-wide crises and natural disasters.
  • Contributes to Student Wellness Services social/electronic media/website presence.
  • Consults on electronic health record initiatives.
  • Participates in back-up after-hours crisis intervention in conjunction with ProtoCall services.
  • After-hours programming, outreach, and clinical interventions required.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited program in clinical psychology, social work, or another related field.
  • Valid licensure as a mental health professional in the state of California (Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor). If licensed with similar qualification in another state, licensure to practice in California within 6mo of hire.
  • 5 years of related clinical experience, with a minimum of 2 years' experience working in a college/university environment.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical supervision and experience in a progressive leadership capacity in a mental health center, an integrated medical-mental health center or university clinic.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex crisis situations within a university counseling setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student population
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills, public speaking, and leading group discussions.
  • Thorough knowledge and practice of applicable laws standards of care and ethical professional conduct.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advance planning.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree from an accredited program in clinical psychology, social work, or related field.
  • Valid licensure as Clinical Psychologist in the state of California. If licensed with similar qualification in another state, licensure to practice in California within 6mo of hire.
  • 10+ years related professional experience, 4+ years of clinical supervision, and 4+ years of administrative supervision for a team of mental health providers.
  • Progressive clinical and administrative experience in a college counseling center, including program development; outcome assessment; the management of workflows; oversight of financial resources and budgetary planning; and the use of data to enhance services.
  • Appreciation and understanding of the culture and priorities of a science and technology-focused research institution.

Hiring Range

$97,000 - $125,900 Per Year

Job Description

Under the direction of the Security leadership team and guidance of PBMU nursing leadership, the Security Specialist is the primary responder for all safety concerns in the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (PBMU), both individually and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
This individual interacts with patients experiencing behavioral or mental health crisis to decrease the emotional, physical and mental stress levels of a situation using verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques and if necessary, utilizing Crisis Prevention Institute physical techniques to bring the patient exhibiting aggressive behavior under control for further therapeutic clinical intervention. They provide safety and security to patients, healthcare workers and the unit by responding to situations to de-escalate crisis situations. Protects and maintains a secure environment by enforcing rules and regulations to provide for the safety of personnel, patients, visitors and the property.
Protects staff, patients, and property by intervening with physical intervention if patient begins to act out and/or present danger to staff, patients, self or property. This role is a key safety component in the security department's efforts to deter, detect, prevent, respond, and document concerns or incidents that risk the safety and well-being of patients, families, visitors, workforce members, and property by utilizing appropriate protocols, emergency response procedures, and/or non-violent crisis intervention methods.
This individual will respond, support, mitigate, de-escalate and document all security incidents or service requests on the unit. Individuals in this position are responsible for identifying, documenting, communicating, and mitigating and de-escalating safety and risk issues that may impact the ability of PBMU to provide environmental safety and care to patients, families, and staff.
Individuals in this position respond to situations that include but are not limited to code response, safety escorts, belongings and room searches, fire emergencies, hazardous spills, disaster response, medical emergencies, safety support, missing child, active shooter, bomb threats, individuals under distress or escalated, unauthorized persons on Seattle Children's property or buildings occupied by Seattle Children's workforce members with intentions to commit crimes such as vandalism, theft, and assault.

**Required Education/Experienc** e: Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field with a minimum of one (1) year of related experience in Security Services, Public Safety, Law Enforcement or related field; or a minimum of three (3) years aforementioned experience may offset the education.

- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 90 days of hire
