- Works in a confined area and remains seated for long periods of time entering data into various computer systems.
- Must be able to work different shifts with possible mandatory overtime, holidays and weekend as needed.
- Assigns appropriate public safety personnel for routine and emergency calls for service.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including notifying supervisor of any concerns.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED) will be the minimum level of education that will be considered.
- Must be 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to learn law enforcement terminology and procedures.
- Must not have any felony convictions and pass a background check.
- Must successfully complete the state mandated 911 Basic Course within one year of hire.
- Ability to possess or be able to obtain a valid SD driver's license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Overview
Sentara Communications Assistants play a critical role within the organization facilitating all emergent and non-emergent communication both externally and internally. Our Centralized Hospital Communications Center is responsible for all Sentara Hospitals and free-standing emergency departments. (Currently 12 hospitals and 4 FSEDs). Emergency Call facilitation will include but is not limited to receiving, activating, and tracking complex emergency alerts such as Security, Facility and Medical Alerts. When processing emergency alerts, in addition to making overhead announcements, you will activate paging groups, contact on-call providers and teams, coordinate and track responses from physicians, specialized nursing teams, air and ground transport, and others. Some of our most serious emergencies will include activating the Sentara Emergency Notification system for mass notifications. Internal call facilitation will generally include utilizing complex on-call schedules with escalations and facilitating nurse to physician and physician to physician communication to include emergent consultations. Will assist with training new employees when needed and additional duties as assigned.
Previous healthcare and high-volume multi-line phone office setting experience preferred. Understanding medical terminology preferred. .

+ Requires certification of CCIC/NCIC operations within six months of issuance of operator security/number.
+ Must maintain CCIC/NCIC certification with a renewal of certification every two years.

**WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:**
+ Physical activities include frequently lifting (from a sitting or bending position) objects weighing up to 10 pounds with or without assistance.
+ Long periods of sitting, standing or walking may be required. Assigned work is performed indoors in an emergency communications center environment with occasional work outside; that includes exposure to multiple telephone and radio signals; tone alarms; and in-person, radio, and telephone voice communications, loud noises, and vibrations.

**Essential Functions**
+ Supports a centralized 24-hour call center for specific facilities experiencing medical, facility, security, or weather-related emergency events.
+ Answers, documents, and dispatches all incoming emergency line calls according to established protocols. Follows specific procedures for individual facilities. Initiates notifications via required modalities (Emergency Notification System, overhead paging, etc.) as quickly as possible with a high degree of accuracy.
+ Clearly and correctly conduct overhead page announcements per established protocols.
+ Quickly ascertain the request of callers whether public, patient, provider or caregiver and accurately route the call.
+ Monitor various alarm systems (Fire alarms, infant abduction systems, nurse call systems, etc.) and respond accordingly per established protocols.
+ Report any detected irregularities from monitored systems to the appropriate personnel per established protocols.
+ Respond to after-hours calls for covered practices and page staff and providers as needed and per established procedures. (Varies per site)
+ Perform other call center answering and call routing functions as necessary.

A Dispatcher is a member of a call center which not only handles PBX functions but serves as an essential part to emergency communications during medical, facility, security and weather-related emergency events. The call centers operate 24 hours a day and seven days a week at one of several Intermountain locations. As the first point of contact for emergencies and the general public seeking information, a successful candidate will be able to balance excellent customer service with the ability to handle emergencies quickly and decisively.
