We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead our Internal Tools team. This role focuses on team leadership, culture maintenance, and project delivery. The team is focused on internal users, and develops applications using a variety of languages. The manager's primary responsibility will be to support the team and ensure the successful delivery of internal software solutions.
Description
The Software Engineering Manager will oversee a team responsible for building and maintaining internal software systems.
Key responsibilities include: • Team Leadership: Manage, coach, and mentor software engineers. Conduct performance reviews and support professional development. • Culture Development: Foster a productive and inclusive team environment. Promote effective communication and collaboration. • Planning & Execution: Collaborate with stakeholders to define team roadmaps, prioritize projects, and allocate resources. Ensure timely delivery of software. • Process Improvement: Implement and refine development processes to improve team efficiency. • Technical Understanding: Maintain an understanding of the team's technical architecture and guide technical discussions. Address technical debt and ensure solutions are scalable and maintainable. • Hiring: Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new engineering talent. • Collaboration: Coordinate with other departments to manage project dependencies and communicate team progress. • Blocker Removal: Identify and resolve impediments for the team.
Minimum Qualifications

5+ years of experience in a leadership role managing software engineering teams.

Prior experience as a software engineer with a strong understanding of the software development lifecycle and engineering best practices.

Demonstrated ability to coach and develop engineers.

Experience with project planning and resource allocation.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing teams working with functional programming languages, specifically Clojure.

Experience building internal tools or platform systems.

Familiarity with multiple programming languages (e.g., Swift, Python, JavaScript, Clojure).

Pay & Benefits
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $176,600 and $313,500, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Meet The Team: The Developer Tooling organization is focused on enabling and empowering developers by delivering highly efficient systems that enhance developer productivity across the engineering organization. We are looking for a seasoned leader that will bring new ideas, optimizations, and best practices for the entire software organization. As a director, you will work closely with managers and engineers to improve the processes that support the development of high-quality safety-critical software. What You’ll Do: Oversee and drive the development and maintenance of build systems, CI/CD Pipelines, testing frameworks, and code analysis tools that support rapid experimentation while ensuring compliance, security, and traceability. Establish clear metrics and KPIs to measure the effectiveness and impact of developer tools and platforms on engineering performance and time to value delivery. Drive cross-functional initiatives to improve development workflows, identify bottlenecks, and deliver tooling solutions that scale with the organization Deliver platform abstractions and reusable frameworks that simplify access to distributed compute, model training environments, inference environments, target hardware environment, and observability tools. What You’ll Need to Succeed: Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience with at least 3-5 years in an engineering management or leadership role. Proven success leading teams that build and maintain internal developer platforms, CI/CD systems, and cloud-native infrastructure. Solid knowledge of modern software development practices including GitOps, DevSecOps, continuous integration and deployment. Familiarity with ML Tooling ecosystems (e.g. MLflow, Kubeflow, Sagemaker, Ray, W&B, etc.) Ability to communicate actionable insights using data to technical and non-technical audiences. Critical/logical thinking to identify problems and provide solutions to ensure efficiency, safety, and quality. Ability to effectively manage a team of managers and professionals and identify opportunities to grow and develop the team. Ability to evangelize best practices and promote consistent standards including test automation, observability, and performance metrics. Job Summary: We are seeking a seasoned Software Engineering Manager to lead our Internal Tools and Infrastructure team. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about developer productivity, infrastructure reliability, and operational excellence. You'll guide a team of talented engineers responsible for building and maintaining the tools, services, and systems that support internal development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud infrastructure.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, grow, and mentor a team of software and DevOps engineers working on internal tooling, developer experience, and infrastructure automation.
- Driving meaningful business outcomes by eliminating friction, accelerating delivery, and empowering teams to perform at their highest potential.
- Own the strategy and roadmap for internal platforms, including build systems, CI/CD pipelines, observability tooling, system release infrastructure, and development environments.
- Collaborate with engineering, security, and IT teams to ensure scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure across disciplines.
- Develop and maintain internal software tools that automate and optimize business-critical workflows across teams such as operations, finance, support, and product.
- Build self-service tools and platforms that empower non-technical teams to independently perform tasks that traditionally require engineering support.
- Identify pain points in the engineering experience and prioritize improvements that boost team velocity.
- Ensure high availability and performance of internal systems through resilient architecture and efficient operations.
- Champion developer-centric usability and documentation to ensure adoption of internal tools.
- Manage vendor relationships and tool evaluations related to internal development platforms.
- Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering and 5+ years of software engineering experience OR (3+ years experience with a graduate degree) with a strong foundation in backend service development and infrastructure automation
- 2+ years in a leadership or people management role within an engineering organization.
- Proficiency with Python
- Proven experience building internal tools, developer productivity systems, or platform infrastructure.
- Solid understanding of DevOps tooling and practices, including CI/CD (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins), container orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure).
- Experience writing custom plug-ins or APIs for developer tools, version control systems, IDEs, or CI systems.
- Proficiency with web backend technologies (e.g., OpenAPI, Flask, Django, or Node.js backends).
- Strong problem-solving skills and a drive to eliminate inefficiencies and bottlenecks in developer workflows.
- Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi).
- Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog).
- Experience integrating and expanding enterprise tools (e.g. Oracle, Atlassian, Altium, SolidWorks, Slack).
- Familiarity with hardware-software integration workflows (e.g., firmware flashing, FPGA build tools, HIL testing, embedded systems).
- Experience managing developer environments that span embedded, backend, and scripting toolchains.
- Prior involvement in building an internal developer portal or platform.
- Exposure to multiple programming environments and build systems (e.g., CMake, BitBake, Gradle).
- Understanding of developer UX principles and human-centered design practices.
