**This Opportunity**
WSP is currently initiating a search for an **Environmental Scientist** for our Lansing, Michigan office. The following locations are also included: **Ann Arbor, MI; Detroit, MI; Grand Rapids, MI; Kalamazoo, MI; South Bend, IN;** and **Toledo, OH.**
Your Impact
+ Plan, oversee, and lead wetland delineations and stream assessments for linear and renewable energy projects in the Midwest.
+ Prepare field equipment, mapping, Safe Work Plans, and logistics for field work.
+ Perform data entry, data analysis and report compilation.
+ Conduct coordination with various governmental agencies (USFWS, USACE, EPA, etc.).
+ Prepare wetland delineation reports, and permit applications for federal and/or state environmental permits, including USACE Section 404 and Section 10, state wetland and stream permits, NPDES, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service coordination, and state natural heritage agency coordination.
+ Field components may require long hours and/or be physically demanding, and may require being on foot 10-12 hours per day traversing various topography while carrying equipment in varying weather conditions.
**Who You Are**
**Required Qualifications**
+ 3+ years of experience conducting wetland delineations and stream assessments, preferably in Ohio and surrounding states.
+ Bachelors of Arts or Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Biology or related field.
+ Familiarity with USACE wetland data forms, ORAM wetland data forms, and QHEI and HHEI stream data forms.
+ Experience with GPS field data collection.
+ Plant identification of midwest vegetation.
+ Willingness to learn and implement various field methods for collection of data.
+ Proficient with data management, organization and MS Office Suite.
+ Attention and commitment to timely completion of high-quality work, often independently motivated.
+ Flexibility and adaptability to meet fast-paced demands.
+ Willing to work long hours in the field for possibly two weeks out of the month or more during peak periods of fieldwork.
+ High level of motivation and an ability to work independently as part of various teams.

**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Experience as a team member on a wetland delineation crew and/or familiar with the typical responsibilities of the field assistant role.
+ Experience with use of ArcGIS, ArcOnline, ArcCollector and ArcGIS Enterprise, Trimble GPS units and Terrasync software.
+ Strong technical writing skills, clear communicator, ability to work as part of multidisciplinary teams, and attention to detail.
+ Knowledge of USACE 401/404 permitting, Section 10 permitting and mitigation requirements.

Your Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic Environmental Scientist with 3-5 years of experience in leading field teams that has a keen interest in the natural sciences to join our Michigan team. Your Key Responsibilities

  • Delineating and characterizing wetlands and other water resources;
  • Conducting botanical surveys, natural community mapping, wildlife surveys and habitat assessments, stream and wetland functional assessments, and mitigation monitoring;
  • Assisting with the coordination and management of environmental permitting, assessment, and/or compliance work related to various federal and state agency requirements as they pertain to a variety of project types including natural gas pipelines, renewables, electrical transmission and distribution facilities, transportation, and development projects;
  • Other technical duties may include assisting with other biological surveys, including avian, bat, and mussel surveys;

Position Purpose:
The laboratory studies how common consumer product chemicals (flame retardants, phthalates, etc.) may interfere with the body's endocrine system when humans are exposed to them every day. The lab is interested in how exposure to these chemicals (and mixtures of these chemicals) may disrupt metabolic health and contribute to or exacerbate obesity and other metabolic disorders. The lab will also be setting up a small zebrafish facility to help translate mechanistic cell-based research into a vertebrate animal model, allowing for easier translation to potential human health effects.
Essential Functions:
Performs cell culture and receptor activation/binding experiments:
Grow, maintain, expand, and test different human and animal cell lines.
Uses these cell lines to perform receptor binding and activation assays.
Use mesenchymal stem cells and pre-adipocyte models to assess role of chemicals in differentiation, proliferation, and development of fat or other cell types.
Perform processing of diverse environmental samples and preparation of chemical and mixture stock solutions for testing in mechanistic assays.
Help maintain zebrafish colony and performs routine care:
Contributes to regular feedings of the zebrafish colony throughout the week and occasionally on weekends. Help manage other staff and students to facilitate this process.
Help perform regular maintenance on zebrafish system - water chemistry, breeding of fish for experimental purposes or to establish a new generation.
Assist with and perform exposure experiments in fish, in particular assessing metabolic health endpoints with fluorescent imaging, growth measurements, and behavioral testing.
Assist with fish facility inspections and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)/chemical/animal care protocol preparation and approvals.
Prepare laboratory records:
Prepare daily records of experimental procedures and results.
Help maintain laboratory supplies and assists with operations:
Order and maintain laboratory supplies, handles administrative duties, and assist other lab members as necessary for the smooth functioning of the laboratory.
Maintain an amicable relationship with company/vendor representatives.
Receive shipments, restocks shelves and aliquots out commonly used supplies.
Assist with laboratory inspections and protocol preparation and approvals.
Help with onboarding of new employees, scheduling, and training.
Perform other related duties as assigned:
Upon request, perform other tasks requested by Principal Investigator to maintain a smooth operation of the laboratory.
Perform collaborative projects and tasks with internal and external colleagues as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree
Bachelor's degree in biology, Chemistry, or related Majors.
OR
Master's degree in fields listed above or previous research experience in laboratories performing Endocrinology, Toxicology, Environmental Health, Molecular/Cellular Biology research.
Experience: Entry level (less than a year of job-related experience).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Previous experience working with zebrafish is a plus, as the laboratory contains a small zebrafish colony to support metabolic health and endocrine disrupting chemical testing.
Previous tissue culture experience working with human/animal cell lines is a plus, as a major component of this laboratory will be cell-based and cellfree mechanistic assays.
