Research Scientist - Department of Oncology

Essential functions (job duties):
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, provide scientific and technical assistance to complete laboratory based, clinical or population science research. May assist in writing research protocols and in manuscript preparation. Design and perform research protocols independently or as directed through training in more difficult or specialized procedures to meet the needs of the research protocol.
With the assistance of the Principal Investigator, find and write research grants with the goal of obtaining additional research grant funding. Responsibilities may also include c oordinating correspondence with applicants and grantees, acknowledging receipts of proposals, and maintaining a system to track proposals.
Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research. Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. A ssist staff with experiments/ research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.
Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data. Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. P roofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.
Prepare and present presentations regarding research project results for professional, scientific and academic conferences. Summarize and organize data results for submittal to academic and scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. W rite scientific manuscripts and other documents for publication. Fact-check , proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.
Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Unique duties:
Write and edit scientific documents including research manuscripts, grant proposals, technical reports, and supporting materials such as abstracts, biosketches, and letters of support. Create and design educational and communication materials such as brochures, presentations, infographics, and web content to support internal and external research initiatives. Collaborate with faculty and research teams to gather technical information, clarify scientific concepts, and ensure content accuracy and consistency across communications. Provide editorial support for grant applications, ensuring clarity, coherence, adherence to agency guidelines, and compelling narrative structure for competitive submissions. Develop and maintain templates, style guides, and other tools to enhance the efficiency and consistency of proposal development and research communications. Participate in the development of online resources and writing tools to guide faculty through the proposal preparation process. Facilitate and support meetings and workshops focused on proposal planning, team science, strategic planning, and professional development in scientific writing and communication. Stay current on funding trends and best practices in scientific writing by engaging in ongoing learning and professional development opportunities. Manage multiple writing projects simultaneously, balancing deadlines and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to meet institutional research goals.

The successful candidate will play a key role in an NIH-funded project examining molecular, cellular, and behavioral changes in diabetic rodent models. Key Responsibilities: Oversee and maintain rodent colonies, including monitoring animal health and welfare Induce and manage diabetes in rodents using established protocols Perform tissue harvesting and histological preparation of ocular tissues Conduct molecular and cellular assays (e.g., qPCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry) Assist with behavioral assessments related to corneal sensitivity and nerve function Maintain accurate experimental records and contribute to data analysis Ensure compliance with IACUC protocols and laboratory safety regulations

Your Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic Environmental Scientist with 3-5 years of experience in leading field teams that has a keen interest in the natural sciences to join our Michigan team. Your Key Responsibilities

  • Delineating and characterizing wetlands and other water resources;
  • Conducting botanical surveys, natural community mapping, wildlife surveys and habitat assessments, stream and wetland functional assessments, and mitigation monitoring;
  • Assisting with the coordination and management of environmental permitting, assessment, and/or compliance work related to various federal and state agency requirements as they pertain to a variety of project types including natural gas pipelines, renewables, electrical transmission and distribution facilities, transportation, and development projects;

  • Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships within their technical team and Business Center;
  • Good driving record and valid driver's license required;
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen, alcohol screen, and baseline physical
  • Willingness to travel and conduct field work in potentially remote areas for extended periods including overnight travel is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather; and
  • Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day and to lift up to 50 lbs.
Education and Experience
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in an environmental (botany, biology, ecology, natural resources, wildlife biology, or related field) discipline with demonstrated experience with biological surveys in the region;
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience delineating wetlands according to US Army Corps of Engineers Manual and the corresponding Regional Supplements is required;
  • Completion of a wetland delineation training course is preferred;
  • Demonstrated academic and professional experience with plant, soil, and wetland identification and characterization in the region;
  • Must be comfortable with computers and iPad GPS units or other similar GPS based survey equipment; and
  • Technical writing skills are essential for this position. Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
