The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is a community-based, nonprofit land conservation organization that protects and preserves the natural resources and scenic beauty of the Hudson Highlands region. For more information, visit

Since 2019 The Fresh Air Fund (FAF) and Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) have collaborated on this jointly held internship program.

Position Summary

Land Management Interns focus on invasive species management and habitat restoration working at both Sharpe Reservation and Granite Mountain. Interns will perform invasive species inventories, assessment, monitoring, and control at The Sharpe Reservation and HHLT's properties. Under the supervision of both the HHLT, Preserve Manager and Ecological Restoration Specialist and The Sharpe Reservation Program Coordinator, intern(s) will assist in managing the diverse natural systems on the properties, including: controlling and removing invasive plant species in target areas; monitoring wildlife populations of invasive pests of hemlocks and ash trees; completing assessments of specified areas; assistance in the creation of an Invasive Species Management Plan at The Sharpe Reservation; creation of educational outreach videos and materials. Interns will also help lead educational hikes and volunteer days, while also working remotely with a team of interns at the Vassar Ecological Preserve and the Louis Calder Center.

Interns will receive hands-on experience in natural areas management to further the development of the intern(s) toward their professional trajectory. This position is designed to ground the individual with professional skill sets related to ecological land management while improving ecosystem health in the Hudson Valley.

This is an in-person residential position based at The Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill, NY. This role reports to the HHLT, Preserve Manager and Ecological Restoration Specialist and The Sharpe Reservation Program Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the Invasive Species management plan for The Sharpe Reservation.
  • Survey, monitor, and manage invasive species, both terrestrial and aquatic.
  • Utilize GIS to map the current range and distribution of invasive species throughout Sharpe Reservation, as well as detect possible pathways of invasion.
  • Identify and remove invasive species (based on target species or geographies) at Sharpe Reservation and HHLT's Preserves.
  • Monitor plots throughout the properties, such as ash plots, hemlock woody adelgid plots, spotted lantern fly plots, and beech leaf disease plots.
  • Lead volunteer groups on invasive species removal projects.
  • Lead public hikes focused on invasive species and the natural world.
  • Participate in trail work and the monitoring/management of invasive species along respective trails.
  • Create an interpretive brochure, signage, videos, and social media related to invasive species - their impact on habitat, management, and the like.
  • Update iMapInvasives entries for HHLT's Preserves.
  • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.


Desired Skills and Experience

  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS is desirable but not required.

  • Valid Driver's License and personal transportation preferred for residential participants, commuting participants need reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Previous experience with invasive species management is desirable but not required.
  • Ability to use hand tools.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions, and on difficult terrain.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend and carry heavy loads.


Employment period: Begin June 2nd, 2025 and ends June 28th, 2025

Compensation: $16.00-$17.00 per hour based on experience. Onsite Housing as well as limited meals provided. Gas mileage reimbursement provided at the end of the employment period.

This position plays a critical role in supporting tribal land sovereignty, executing property acquisitions, and managing real estate transactions that benefit the community and future generations. As a Land Development Manager working for Taylor Morrison you will be responsible to effectively and efficiently coordinate the development of company-owned property to achieve business plans and financial objectives. Will create and manage land development budgets, monitor work and actively track invoices, need to understand all components of the land development processes and timing/sequencing of all phases of those processes. Secure the company’s ability to deliver lots on time and play an integral role in the planning process for the jurisdictions in which the company operates, anticipating all possible requirements needed to secure building permits. Ability to understand design-related components necessary to satisfy jurisdictional requirements. We trust that as a Land Development Manager you will: (responsibilities) Conceptual Plan/Preliminary Plat/Final Plat Obtain approval of subdivision, development and reimbursement agreements Obtain common area landscape plan approval Direct civil engineer on improvement plan issues and schedules Direct civil engineer on final plat development issues and schedule Direct civil engineer on final plat schedules Prepare trade specific scopes of work, bid package, and construction contracts Evaluate and quantify bid results by trade Coordinate with dry utility companies for plan preparation, service agreements, easement dedications, and schedule Schedule and attend all pre-construction and onsite progress meetings Coordinate wetland mitigation work Manage day-to-day operations of general contractor and all other trades Manage day-to-day development activities Schedule appropriate vendors / subcontractors to meet project schedule Direct all trades on conflicts to achieve resolution Comply with all agency requirements Inspect improvements to ensure compliance with plans Coordinate start of home construction with contractors and agencies Implement erosion control Communicate to other Land staff and, if appropriate, Sales and Construction Create subdivision punch list with inspectors Direct all trades on all corrective punch list measures and periodic maintenance/repairs Implement maintenance measures Lead New Community Opening Meetings Create subdivision one year punch list with inspectors Direct all trades on all corrective one year punch list measures Obtain conditional use and/or temporary permits, as required Coordinate and communicate with HOA and CDD’s Prepare affordable housing program (if required) Prepare sales disclosures (as needed) You are willing to perform other duties as assigned What you will need: (competencies, behaviors & attributes) Business Acumen Customer Focus Developing Direct Reports and Others Drive for Results Priority Setting Self-Knowledge About you: 3 years combined experience in the Home Building Industry Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Civil Engineering, Planning or Construction Management required Attention to detail A MUST Ability to anticipate possible obstacles and propose favorable solutions Strong work ethic and commitment to implementation and execution Concise writing and public speaking/presentation skills are desirable for reporting to the management team Ability to read improvement plans, formulate budgets and understand accounting principles Strong computer and negotiating skills Action and results oriented Superior ability to successfully multi-task and utilize project management skills FLSA Status: Exempt Will have responsibilities such as: Interviewing, selecting, and training employees; Setting rates of pay and hours of work; Appraising productivity; handling employee grievances or complaints, or disciplining employees; Determining work techniques; Planning the work; Apportioning work among employees; Determining the types of equipment to be used in performing work, or materials needed; Planning budgets for work; Monitoring work for legal or regulatory compliance; Providing for safety and security of the workplace Essential Functions: Successful job applicants will be able to perform these functions.   • In this position, the Land Development Engineer leads the technical design for an interdisciplinary team of civil engineers, project planners, and CAD designers.
  • This position reports directly to the Director of the Land Development Department.
  • Candidates should be engineers or designers with a high technical competency experienced in land development projects, sustainable design, utility design, and stormwater management design.
  • The ideal candidate is experienced with the unique requirements of design and permitting for development projects, including schools and other institutional projects, and commercial/retail projects.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: Bachelors (Required)
  • Experience: Civil engineering: 5 years (Required)
  • Language: English (Required)
  • Minimum 3 years of design experience on land development projects
  • K-12 site design experience a plus (but not required)
  • Proficiency with Civil 3D and Office 360 products (Excel, Word, etc.)
TYPICAL DUTIES:
  • Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Leads a team in the preparation of project drawings, calculations, and specifications.
  • Prepares engineering analysis, design, calculations, and reports
  • Evaluates land use and zoning requirements and is familiar with zoning ordinances and site plan approval processes.
  • Prepares permit applications and is responsible for working through agency review processes and obtaining approvals.
  • Makes occasional site visits during the construction phase of the work to assess progress and quality of construction.
  • Works with dynamic design teams including the owner/developer, architects, landscape architects, engineering trades, and contractors.
  • Provides mentorship and training for junior staff
