A Carter Lumber General Manager is responsible for the overall operation management of multiple stores in a single market. This is accomplished by following the direction set by the Market Manager or Market VP in the areas of foundation, inventory, sales, and profit. Complying with policies and procedures, monitoring key employees, controlling inventory purchases and levels, developing sales, and communication are all components of this position. Effective communication with the field, internal departments, and external vendors is mandatory for the success of this position.

This role involves managing a full line lumber yard that will serve as a central hub for all locations within the Atlanta Market.

Requirements:
  • Previous general management experience in the building materials industry
  • Previous experience managing installed sales and outside sales programs
  • Proven track record in sales management, primarily dealing with contractors
  • Ability to direct and train others effectively as a team leader
  • Demonstrated ability to increase sales and profitability
  • Well developed problem-solving abilities and strong conflict resolution skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to travel to various jobsites; may include overnight travel
Responsibilities: Store Operations
  • Manages and implements the overall direction of multiple stores in a market. Responsible for properly delegating and overseeing all aspects of inventory and sales management, safety requirements, and policies and procedures. Effectively communicates sales and profit goals to ensure the support of the team. Facilitates frequent store visits and conducts job site visits when necessary.
Staff Management
  • Responsible for setting the direction and managing areas of employment such as hiring, communication, motivation, discipline, separation, and other areas. Ensures goals are outlined for employees and are met. Ensures sales team is up-to-date on product trends.
Sales & Relationship Building
  • Manages the growth of the outside and installed sales programs by ensuring that new prospects are obtained and current relationships and services are successfully maintained. This is accomplished by building relationships, following up on key accounts, and resolving customer complaints effectively.
Knowledge & Training
  • Identifies personal growth needs and learning opportunities. Completes required training. Commits to continued learning on products, packages, procedures, and more. Encourages and oversees employee career development.

Job Description

The Director, Leadership Development contributes to the execution of the Children's People Strategy by leading a team of professionals to deliver solutions aimed at improving manager and leadership capability and effectiveness across the system. Solutions may include, but are not limited to, management and leadership training, assessment and coaching, as well as team performance.

The Director oversees the implementation and effectiveness of all Leadership Development initiatives across the Children's system.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement leadership learning and develop offerings that are in alignment with Children's People Strategy. Ensure depth and breadth of ongoing development for Children's leadership.
  • Design and implement training to ensure Children's people managers are well equipped and successful in their roles leading others.
  • Ensure all supporting leadership development processes are aligned, such as leadership assessment, competency models, development planning and program measurement.
  • Accountable for and oversees the design and implementation of the New Leader Orientation, People Manager Orientation, Manager Essentials Program (MEP) to produce intended outcomes. Ensure validity, system integration, resource and vendor management, measurement, and reporting.
  • Responsible for the successful maintenance and implementation of select high potential programs.
  • Provides coaching services as required.
  • Ensure learnings offered and facilitated are accomplished in the most practical and efficient manner to ensure materials resonate with the audience while demonstrating the cost benefit and return on each program offered.
  • Lead, engage, develop, and retain high performing team.
  • Stay current on and be a thought leader at Children's on leadership best practices.
  • Serve as a member of the Human Resource Leadership Team (HRLT) to set strategic priorities and ensure successful implementation of operational imperatives.

Experience
  • A minimum of ten (10) years progressive experience in learning, and leadership development required.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years progressive experience leading and developing learning professionals.
  • Proven experience in developing and managing learning programs with measurable results and operational impact.
  • Proven experience in needs analysis and designing learning content for business impact and follow through management.
  • Proven experience in optimizing impact of learning programs.
  • Proven experience facilitating workshops and motivating learners to develop.
  • Proven experience providing consultative support and tailoring programs to specifically address business needs.
  • Experience in multiple industries is preferred.
Education
  • A master's degree in Organizational Development, Business Administration or another related field is required.

About the Program:

The Sales & Leadership Development program is a multi-year rotational program aimed at investing in each trainee's future by providing exposure to all aspects of our business. During the program, we work in a structured, thorough manner to develop an aligned understanding of your skill set and long-term career goals.

  • Live into your dreams. We'll pair your passion, skill set, and career goals with our business needs. When the program is complete, you'll have the opportunity to pursue a long-term career in sales, operations management, profit center management, or a variety of other career paths that suit your individual goals and the needs of the business.
  • Learn the business. Your learning path will include on-the-job experience supplemented with coaching from experienced managers, book and computer courses, and visits with customers and vendors. You'll learn about all aspects of our business (including warehouse procedures, operations, and sales) with guidance along the way from mentors and managers.

Here's a look at what you'll accomplish in each phase:

Phase 1:

  • Learn about and perform work related to our business operations such as receiving and shipping material, processing returned goods, making deliveries, and learning about proper truck maintenance.
  • Participate in vendor product knowledge sessions
  • Complete related online courses that facilitate and supplement your learning

Phase 2:
  • Learn about and gain experience working in counter sales including assisting customers and other teammates, processing sales orders, providing reliable product information, and maintaining the display area.
  • Participate in vendor product knowledge sessions
  • Gain experience working with residential, commercial, and repair and remodel contractors

Phase 3:
  • Learn about and gain experience working in sales. Complete tasks related to pricing and margin management, bids, quotes and submittals, product procurement, and job scheduling.
  • Develop relationships with vendors
  • Participate in joint sales calls with outside salespersons

Phase 4:
  • Participate in an in-depth career discussion with your assigned Profit Center Manager and discuss which aspect of business you're interested in pursuing.

About You:

  • College degree or equivalent experience

  • Experience in customer service, sales, management, or leadership roles.
  • Able to drive for company business. As a company business driver, you must:

    • Be at least 18 years old

    • Possess a proper and valid driver's license
    • Have a driving record that meets the criteria for being an Authorized Driver in accordance with company policy.
