Maine Equal Justice (MEJ) is seeking a Legal Director to lead our litigation and legal services in pursuit of greater economic security and equity for people in Maine. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced legal professional who is passionate about economic justice, interested in anti-poverty law, and energized by the power of law, policy, and community advocacy working in concert.
As Legal Director, you will guide MEJ’s legal services and litigation strategy— developing and supporting high-impact cases and aligning legal advocacy with broader systemic goals. You will supervise and mentor a passionate team of attorneys and advocates, lead collaborative problem-solving across teams, and help ensure our work is community-centered, strategic, and aligned with the lived experiences of people most impacted by poverty.
The Legal Director works under the direction of the Executive Director and in close collaboration with the Advocacy & Programs Director and Organizing & Outreach Director. This is a highly collaborative role that combines litigation expertise, team leadership, strategic thinking, and deep commitment to advancing racial and economic justice.
Maine Equal Justice is a nonprofit legal aid and economic justice organization based in Augusta, Maine. We represent the interests of people with low income in the state legislature, before the courts and administrative agencies, and through community outreach and education. Representative Tasks:
- Keeps current on the state of the law and procedures within areas of practice.
- Analyzes laws and regulations and evaluates opportunity to solve systemic problems through administrative advocacy, litigation, or legislation.
- Supervises the legal services team, ensuring quality and effective management and resolution of legal cases and the production of client education materials.
- Promotes litigation skills development and assists attorney staff in developing and pursuing affirmative systemic litigation.
- Represents clients and client groups in court, before administrative agencies, before legislative bodies, and in other appropriate forums.
- Leverages the efforts of the private bar in developing, negotiating and litigating systemic cases.
- Prepares and drafts legal documents, pleadings, motions, briefs and appeals.
- Provides legal expertise and support for the policy team, helping to ensure effective, strategic lobbying and administrative advocacy, including support with legal research, policy analysis, drafting legislation, and commenting on agency rules.
- Collaborates with the Advocacy & Programs Director and Organizing & Outreach Director to ensure the organization’s policy advocacy, community organizing, and legal services are well coordinated and that MEJ is utilizing litigation effectively to help shape public policy and that litigation goals are community driven to the extent possible.
- Collaborates and coordinates with other legal services organizations to inform the systemic advocacy at MEJ and assure a high quality of legal representation to MEJ's clients.
- Serves on various commissions, committees, advisory bodies, and substantive panels.
- Contributes to strategic discussions and priority setting within the organization.

- Ability to analyze federal and state laws and policies.
- Ability to assess potential for success in different policy and litigation forums and identify strategic opportunities.
- Ability to secure the most benefit for people with low incomes, to know when to compromise, and realistically assess the tactics and amount of effort required to achieve the goal.

- Knowledge of the Code of Professional Responsibility and the Maine Bar Rules
- Knowledge of the State and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the State and Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure.
- Knowledge of Class Action litigation requirements.
- Ability to work cooperatively with Maine’s private bar, legal service providers, and government officials.
- Ability to work with a diverse pool of low-income clients with cultural humility and in an effective, trauma-informed manner.
- Ability to work with other allies and to work effectively with people of differing opinions.
- Knowledge of various areas of poverty law, including health, welfare, food assistance.
- Knowledge of administrative procedure and rulemaking and related case law.

- Knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Office and G-Suite. Salesforce experience is helpful but not required.
Minimum Qualifications:
JD degree from an accredited law school. Member of state and federal bars in good standing. If not admitted in Maine, must be eligible to waive in or sit for the Maine Bar. Experience litigating class action cases that is sufficient to meet Rule 23 requirements. An eight (8) year combination of education, training, and/or experience in civil legal services, litigation, policy analysis, and/or working on issues affecting people with low incomes.
Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements: Member in good standing of state and federal bars.
Location: This is a hybrid position. Weekly in person presence working in Augusta and Portland may be necessary.
Salary and Benefits: Salary range of $84,000-$94,000 based on experience. Health and dental insurance are provided, with premiums and deductibles mostly covered by employer, as well as employer-paid life insurance and short- and long-term disability insurance. MEJ offers retirement accounts with an annual employer contribution, generous vacation time (five weeks vacation in first year of employment), generous sick time, and 14 paid holidays per year.

The Center for Disability & Elder Law (CDEL) provides free legal services to low-income seniors and people with disabilities. CDEL's clients, individuals often marginalized by age, disability and poverty, may have difficulty accessing the legal system. CDEL strives to provide access to the legal system to assist our clients in asserting their legal rights and live better lives.
CDEL is seeking a Legal Director to join its leadership team. This individual will play a central role in shaping and overseeing the delivery of high-quality legal services. The Legal Director will supervise staff attorneys, interns, and pro bono volunteers, lead legal program development, provide direct legal services, and collaborate with the Executive Director on strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities
- Leadership & Supervision:
- Lead, support, and supervise supervising attorneys and senior attorneys.

Qualifications
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois.
- Minimum of 10 years of legal practice experience; background in estate planning, housing, consumer law, and adult guardianship preferred.

Position Summary:
The Managing Legal Director will provide vision, direction, and support for the ACLUF-SDIC's litigation program. Reporting to the Advocacy and Legal Director, the Managing Legal Director will lead and expand the ACLU-SDIC's litigation program, including developing and litigating high-impact cases and managing the department. The Managing Legal Director will be responsible for executing the overall legal strategy as part of a robust integrated advocacy approach to advance the ACLU-SDIC's mission, and oversee the management and coordination of our docket, litigation staff, and network of cooperating attorneys. Our integrated advocacy approach centers issues teams supporting our organization's priorities. Our current teams are Advancing Justice, Advancing Racial and Economic Justice, and Advancing Immigrants' Rights.
As a critical member of the organization's Senior Leadership Team consisting of the executive team and department directors, the Managing Legal Director will provide strategic leadership aligning with our organization priorities on both litigation and non-litigation legal advocacy strategies in our priority areas of criminal justice, immigrants' rights, racial and economic justice, as well as other civil rights and liberties issues. In addition, the Managing Legal Director will work in close coordination with our policy, organizing, Imperial Valley regional office and communications teams, with national and California ACLU staff, and other local and national partners engaging in an integrated advocacy model to advance our organizational goals. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage all aspects of the ACLU-SDIC's litigation program, including working in concert with the Advocacy and Legal Director and issue teams in determining when litigation is appropriate to support desired legislative and policy outcomes and for addressing community concerns; working with litigation staff to develop and pursue litigation strategies; overseeing the legal intake process; implementing efficient systems and processes; overseeing the investigation and development of cases before commencing litigation; and building litigation teams with ACLU-SDIC lawyers, cooperating counsel, and nonprofit partners; prepare regular updates, including written as well as oral presentations, about our litigation for the public and across the organization including for the staff, Board, donors, and national office as necessary or assigned.
- Apply an integrated advocacy approach by collaborating and leveraging internal functions with the Communications, Organizing, and Philanthropy departments, as well as the affiliate's Imperial Valley regional office, to advance the ACLU-SDIC's strategic priorities, coordinating policy and legal advocacy tactics, ensuring strategic media exposure, and developing financial resources to grow.
- Serve as a resource on legal matters pertaining to civil rights and civil liberties for staff, partners, and other ACLU-SDIC constituents.
- Be a thought-partner and active, contributing member of the Senior Leadership Team.
- Maintain an individual caseload of developing and active litigation, including overseeing and directing pre-litigation investigations, discovery, motion practice, brief writing, hearings and trials, appellate work, and amicus briefs.

Compensation
The classification salary range for this position is $109,000 to $62,000 and the anticipated hiring range is: 120,000 - 155,000. Salary will be determined by a variety of factors, including the knowledge, skills, and experience of the individual selected.

Legal Director, International Tax
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Legal Director to join the Expedia Legal & Corporate Affairs group to provide legal advice in the analysis of international tax legislation, including corporate income tax and transaction taxes, tax audits, tax litigation, and provide on-going legal support to the Expedia Group tax team. This position will be based in London or Seattle and will report to the Vice President, Legal (Tax).
In this role you will:
- Perform legal research and analysis on international tax issues, including corporate and transaction taxes, with a focus on EMEA and APAC
- Review tax legislation internationally and provide advice on its application to Expedia Group
- Liaise with the Government Affairs and Tax teams on tax policy and proposed tax legislation
- Provide legal advice and strategy for international tax audits, including corporate income, transaction, and withholding taxes
- Assist with international tax litigation and oversee outside counsel in tax matters
- Review intercompany agreements and tax provisions in external contracts
