Mechanical Engineer II

The Mechanical Engineering department in the Shipboard Effectors Department is currently searching for an experienced Mechanical Engineer II to work on a multi-discipline team to support Shipboard Effectors products and subsystems located in Huntsville, AL.

This is an on-site role.

Tasking may range throughout the product life cycle, depending on current local demands. This may include concept development and proposal support, detailed mechanical design, transition-to-production, or sustainment work. This position requires versatility to navigate various program phases, and strong communication skills to collaborate across Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, and other Engineering disciplines to resolve issues.

Responsibilities may include ownership of complex hardware or small subsystem, working closely with Integrated Product Team Leads/Program Managers to ensure that engineering requirements are defined, risks are managed, and schedules/budgets are met. The candidate will ensure Technical Data Packages are maintained and updated as necessary. Decisions must be data driven in nature and require preparing technical justification analysis reports as well as presenting to a variety of Engineering Review Boards. Expect to have basic skillset to grow into leading small project/team as opportunities arise.

What You Will Do

  • Contribute to one or more of our contract-funded and independent research efforts, each of which is at a different phase of development (proposal, design, and integration/test). Engineers are generally assigned to one effort at a time but may make multiple efforts over the course of several years.
  • Communicate with engineering team members and suppliers to analyze, model, and document the technical data package (TDP) and its capabilities and compliance with requirements.
  • Work under limited supervision and act as the responsible engineer over designated hardware, with the ability to self-manage needs for the hardware to ensure technical rigor is maintained, while balancing schedule and budget needs.
  • Perform mechanical design, development, and documentation of components and sub-assemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements.
  • Collaborating across multiple disciplines with Structural and Thermal analyst, Materials Engineering, Quality, Safety, Supply Chain.
  • Lead a small project with limited supervision and meet commitments for assigned schedule, financial, and technical goals.
  • Support suppliers with product integration
  • Understanding of Thermal, Structural, Dynamic, and Reliability analysis to provide input and support. Incorporate results and findings into mechanical design.
  • Perform and review tolerance analysis to ensure form, fit, and function are as intended by design for the use-application.
  • Improve new and existing designs using Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) and Design for Producibility principles.
  • Apply knowledge and experience in technical problem solving and hardware development in a fast paced, team environment.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience
  • Experience in CREO (or equivalent CAD tool)
  • Experience in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5

**Roles and Responsibilities**
+ Own design activities through life of development programs (from concept through detail design to production release).
+ Develop CAD 3D models and associated drawings and other documentation.
+ Design high speed rotating assemblies including shafts, housings, bearing cooling flow paths, seals, etc.
+ Support high speed bearing selection and design.
+ Support strategic new business opportunities and IR&D efforts including rapid iterations to at least a preliminary machine cross section
+ Support structural analysis team in generating deliverables such as rotor dynamics analysis and containment analysis.
+ Work closely with the Systems Engineer, performance engineers, aerodynamicists, structural engineers, and program team to ensure designs meet technical and program requirements.
+ Develop and maintain standard engineering methods and tools used to develop new designs.
+ Manage the development and implementation of new designs through design analysis, risk mitigation, review of safety factors & stack-ups, reliability tools, schedules, and design reviews.
+ Verify designs have adequate Safety Factors prior to releasing to production. Work with customer/ redesign if required to obtain producible designs.
+ Collaborate closely with customers to ensure product performance and integration into end platform.
+ Review and approve documentation for transition from prototype to production.

**Required Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field
+ **Must have a minimum 5 years** **experience in the mechanical layout and design of high-speed turbomachinery (speed greater than 30,000 RPM) for aerospace applications including axial fans, centrifugal blowers, centrifugal and/or mixed flow compressors, and radial inflow and axial turbines. The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.

As part of a hardworking team of engineering professionals, you will design, analyze, and testavionics enclosures for electronic componentson various spacecrafts. This opportunity reports to theSpacecraft Avionics section inside of the Space Mobility business unit.

To be successful in this role you will need to be able to function in a cross disciplinary team and a multifaceted design environment. You need to support electronics development and trade studies, and build interface definition, specification, and control documents. As an Avionics Mechanical Design and Analysis Engineer, you will be responsible for validating requirements through various methods such as design, testing, analysis, and inspection. You will develop and complete comprehensive test plans and interpret the resulting data. Your role will involve generating assembly and/or installation drawings and providing support for hardware builds. You will develop avionics enclosure solutions to ensure high reliability in demanding environments and be involved in the complete craft cycle of flight and critical avionics. Collaboration with the electrical engineering team to create robust printed circuit board systems will be a key part of your responsibilities. Additionally, you will perform thermal and structural analyses of these designs, produce engineering drawings, and oversee the product configuration management throughout the product lifecycle. Finally, you will manage the testing and qualification process for the product, ensuring it meets all necessary standards and requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electro-mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in designing electro-mechanical avionics assemblies, with expertise in static structural, modal, random vibration, and thermal analysis (level commensurate with experience).
  • Familiarity with Steinberg or Engelmeier Solder fatigue.
  • Proficiency with FEA tools, preferably ANSYS.
  • Proven understanding of 3D CAD programs, with a preference for Creo Pro/E.
  • Experience in GD&T implementation and analysis (ASME Y14.5).
  • Background in designing ruggedized electronics enclosures or similar high-performance hardware.
  • Experience in electromechanical design of avionics enclosures, including PCBA integration (ECAD/MCAD), trace sizing, and manufacturing. Knowledge in EMI, thermal, and structural protection of electronic components.
  • Experience in bonding and grounding of electrical components, and sealing and venting of enclosures.
  • Expertise in PCBA connector selection, interconnects, power and data isolation, contacts, and soldering.
  • Understanding of avionics reliability mitigations.
  • Skills in thermal and structural analysis of avionics enclosures and PCBA components.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Effective communication of analysis results.
  • Capability to earn trust and maintain positive, professional relationships.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

  • Proficiency with recent versions of Creo, Windchill, ANSYS, ICEPAK, and Sherlock.
  • Expertise in fatigue analysis and fracture mechanics using hand calculations, NASGRO, VCCT, etc.
  • Knowledge of aerospace industry standard structural analysis methods: Bruhn, Marks', Shigley, Steinberg, Roark's.
  • Awareness of environmental testing standards: SMC-S-016, DO-160, MIL-STD-810.

As the Missile Mechanical Design and Integration Engineering Manager, you will provide first line leadership to a team of engineers tasked with developing and integrating Missile Hardware and supporting missile production operations at subcontracted and internal production facilities across the United States. • Leadership of an engineering team through test execution including resolution of test anomalies and failures.

• Drive the 1LMX culture through coordination and communication across multiple organizations to enable on-time delivery of hardware products.

• Leverage the team to identify and lead manufacturability improvements.

• Manage a workforce of engineers to enable 100% support for production operations to support on-time delivery of hardware while enabling a strong work/life balance for the team.

• Ensure 100% compliance to contract and company requirements

• Maintain robust communication with the your peer leaders in adjacent organizations to ensure full alignment and coordination

• Travel up to 25% to suppliers and other LM sites

Basic Qualifications:

• Expertise with design and manufacturing of complex mechanical systems

• Experience resolving complex problems in an engineering support role to production and/or testing operations

• Extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals including structures, mechanisms, materials and analysis

• Experience in mechanical design or mechanical integration

• Ability to manage multiple assignments and customers simultaneously

• Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary product development teams

• Experience leading projects or teams and driving action to closure while holding others accountable

Responsibilities:

The HVAC/R Technician role is primarily responsible for performing repairs and maintenance to a variety of HVAC and Refrigeration equipment including air conditioning, electric motors, heating units, heat pumps, hermetic compressors, commercial furnaces, boilers, burners, intake and exhaust fans, economizers and humidifiers, RTUs, remote condensing units, ice machines, walk-in coolers & freezers, and upright refrigerators & freezers.

Qualifications:
