JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, picks up students at designated stops and transports students in a safe and timely manner for field trips.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Picks up students at designated areas and transport students to designated field trip locations, as
assigned for field trips.
2. Completes the code of conduct sheets and submits to the supervisor.
3. Performs all job duties in a safe and timely manner. Complies with local traffic regulations. Reports
delays or accidents.
4. Verifies that equipment is operating correctly.
5. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Vehicles (e.g., automobile, truck, tractor, forklift) Class B CDL Certification Operation of 2-way radios, e-mail, all types of school buses (regular and special education) and special needs equipment
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff.
WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
Work and tasks are often straightforward, routine, structured and guided by established policies and procedures. Little, if any, independent judgment is required, outside of making basic choices in the selection and application of established methods. The job receives frequent, ongoing supervision.

No budget development activity is required.

Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job's own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures or services.

Follows rules and procedures. Decisions can have minimal or no impact to HISD. Errors can be readily detected, usually by the employee, and, if made, would result in minor expense for correction.

Information sharing - gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instructions and reporting results. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor and coworkers in own and other departments.
CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS
Follows through with customer inquiries, requests and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution.
WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Ability to carry and/or lift up to 15 to 44 pounds.

These positions are open to the public and all current city employees covered under the City's Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Teamsters Local 700 (Bargaining Unit 08). Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, a Pool Motor Truck Driver in the Department of Streets and Sanitation and the Chicago Department of Aviation. Works full-time temporary assignments, driving and operating a wide variety of motor vehicles and power equipment; and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Spreads sand and salt
- Transports materials, tools, equipment, and personnel to and from projects
- Inspects automotive equipment for proper operation
- Performs related duties as assigned
In addition to the above duties, a Pool Motor Truck Driver in the Department of Streets & Sanitation :
- Drives refuse collection trucks, tow trucks, snowplows, salt spreaders, and all rolling motorized stock to clear streets and alleys
- Assignments within this department may require alternate shifts and/or weekend shifts
In addition to the above duties, a Pool Motor Truck Driver in the Chicago Department of Aviation:
- Drives snowplows and salt spreaders to clear streets, airfields, and runways
- Communicates with other drivers and control tower personnel while on the airfield
Additional duties may be required for this position.

QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience
* Possession of a Valid State of Illinois Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of application. Cannot have restrictions on CDL limiting operation of equipment.
* A Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for Positions driving a tractor trailer or 20-ton truck.
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
- A valid State of Illinois Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License is required
NOTE: Applicants must pass a driving test demonstrating their ability to operate various vehicles.
Applicants cannot have an Air Brake ("L"), CMV with Full Air Brake ("Z") or Medical Variance ("V") restrictions on their Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
As a condition of continued employment, you must obtain an "X" endorsement on your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) by March 15. 2026 . Candidates who do not possess an "X" endorsement on their CDL by March 15. 2026 will be terminated and removed from the pool.
An "X" endorsement is a combined endorsement of both tankers and hazmat. Candidates who obtain an "X" endorsement by the deadline will remain in the pool until a new assignment becomes available, provided there are no disciplinary or attendance issues.
PREFERENCE:
- Applicants who possess both an "X" endorsement and a "P" endorsement or a commercial learner's permit (CLP) with the "X" and "P" endorsement will be given first consideration to be hired by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA).
NOTE: To be considered for this position you MUST attach a copy of your valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "A" or "B" to your online application. FAILURE TO ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR CDL WILL RESULT IN YOUR APPLICATION BEING INCOMPLETE AND YOU WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION.
Selection Requirements:
This position requires candidates to successfully pass a Road Test. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications pass the Road Test and all other preemployment testing (including passing a Pre-Employment DOT Physical and Drug Screen, City of Chicago indebtedness and background check) will be hired in lottery order.
Candidates selected by the Department of Streets and Sanitation and the Chicago Department of Aviation will be contacted via email. It is the responsibility of the candidate to monitor their emails regularly upon application.
NOTE: CONDITIONAL Pre-Employment DOT Physical Medical Cards will NOT be accepted by the Department of Streets and Sanitation or Chicago Department of Aviation. Candidates must receive a minimum 1-year clearance on DOT by our selected Concentra Clinic.
Pool Motor Truck Drivers (PMTD) at Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA):
Requirements: Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications, AND successfully pass the Road Test, airport background check, Security Threat Assessment (STA) and all other preemployment processes and testing including passing a Pre-Employment DOT Physical, drug screen and criminal background will be hired in lottery order. Preference will be given to individuals who submit a valid copy of their CDL with P and X endorsements.
NOTE: All selected candidates hired by the Chicago Department of Aviation must pass and maintain a basic airfield driving test (yellow stripe) and maintain a valid CDL to remain employed.
Hours: Work hours within this department may require alternate shifts and/or weekends.
Health Benefits: Not available
The season will end on March 31. 2026.
Endorsements required: Candidates who hold the Passenger (P) and Tanker and Hazmat (X) endorsement on their CDL at the time of application will be given preference and hired at CDA prior to candidates who do not hold the endorsements. All individuals must obtain/maintain the X endorsement to remain in the Pool at the end of the season.
Vacancies: 421 (this includes recalls from the pool) Pool Motor Truck Drivers do not need to re-apply.
Pool Motor Truck Drivers (PMTD) at Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS):
NOTE: The Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) does not accept commercial learner's permits (CLP).
Requirements: Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully pass the Road Test, and all other preemployment processes and testing including passing a Pre-Employment DOT Physical, drug screen and criminal background check will be hired in lottery order.
Hours: Guaranteed two-hour shifts. The hours may be extended, if needed, depending on weather conditions and operational needs. Work hours within this department may require alternate shifts and/or weekends.
Health Benefits: Not available
Pool Motor Truck Drivers hired into the Department of Streets and Sanitation for these two-hour shifts are considered part-time and will not be entitled to health insurance.
The season will end: March 31, 2026
Endorsements required: None at the time of application . All individuals must obtain/maintain the X endorsement to remain in the Pool at the end of the season
