UPMC Presbyterian Hospital is looking for pharmacy students interested in gaining valuable inpatient experience, to join their team! You will be trained to have a strong foundation in the operations of pharmacy- automation, robot, dispensing, delivery, IV room, narcotic processes, or satellite. In the summer you will have project time and shadow a Unit Base Pharmacist in P-3 year. You will work weekday daylight shifts, as well as rotating daylight/evening shifts every 3rd weekend.

Purpose:
Under the general direction of the Pharmacy Manager and Director, and general supervision of the Staff Pharmacist, the Pharmacy intern will perform a wide variety of functions to support the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients at UPMC. These services will be provided in compliance with state and federal regulations, the Joint Commission Standards and the mission and policies of the hospital and departments. The internship provides a hands-on experience and a challenging environment to progressively develop the operational and clinical skills to grow in the field of pharmacy.
Responsibilities:
+ Assists the pharmacist with medication distribution, delivering medication, refilling automated dispensing cabinets, and exchanging emergency medication carts.
+ Participate in filling of medication orders maintaining patient profiles, performing prepackaging.
+ Prepare IV admixtures/chemotherapy and controlled substance orders.
+ Assists the pharmacist with medication review, including but not limited to computer order entry, monitoring allergies, enforcing formulary decisions, and evaluating drug interactions.
+ Accurately completes departmental documentation and billing by the end of each scheduled shift in accordance with department procedures. Examples included, but are not limited to, dispensing and compounding records, refrigerator logs, hood-cleaning records, chemotherapy compounding records, patient/department billing, and controlled substance delivery records.
+ Where applicable, complete clinical workload documentation (manual or electronic) by the end of each scheduled shift in accordance with Department procedures.
+ Effectively uses information systems, robotics, and other applications to prepare medication labels and assist with dispensing medications.
+ Prepare drug information responses and medication use evaluations.

**Job Summary and Qualifications**

**The role you'll contribute:**
Primary responsibility is the provision of integrated clinical and distributive pharmacy services, decentralized inter-professional pharmacy practice, direct patient care programs, expert experiential pharmacy student and pharmacy resident training, and leadership of quality improvement and practice advancement initiatives. Proficiently leads general and specialty direct patient care programs, advanced drug management services, and medication use systems throughout the institution. Actively functions as a member of clinical pharmacy services, decentralized pharmacy practice programs, and multidisciplinary teams to proficiently complete critical medication order scrutiny, drug profile review, and monitoring of patients with a broad range of disease states to identify, prevent, or mitigate medication-related problems. Actively participates in medication safety systems, regulatory compliance initiatives, patient quality services, and disease outcomes programs. Delivers general and specialty medication therapy management consult services and disease state management services as needed and proactively intervenes in all areas of medication use as appropriate to optimize patient outcomes. Proficiently verifies/enters medication orders and proactively communicates with medical staff to resolve problem medication orders. Provides patient-centered care services, including accurate, safe and timely medication therapy, and promotes cost-effective drug therapy, including actively participating in stewardship activities and restricted medication/surveillance programs. Initiates and facilitates appropriate drug dosing and manages medication-related pharmacist consults. Facilitates medication safety practices, including identifying, mitigating, and reporting potential and actual adverse drug events, adverse drug reactions, and medication errors. Participates in the management of medical emergencies. Maintains continuous learning and pharmacy practice development. Leads and facilitates pharmacy practice programs, directs patient care services, and medication systems, including developing and monitoring patient care and pharmacy practice metrics. Effectively collaborates with other hospital departments and strategic business unit leaders to advance patient care services and pharmacy programs.
Clinical Pharmacy Services Provides primary coverage of direct patient care programs and provides accurate, safe, timely, and appropriate medication therapy based on patient needs. Works as an active member of pharmacy clinical programs and multidisciplinary teams, collaborates with healthcare providers and pharmacy staff, and places practice priority on the delivery of patient-centered care. Provides comprehensive coverage of decentralized pharmacy area(s) and maintains expertise and continuity-of-practice in assigned patient care areas, clinical roles, and practice assignments. Leads and facilitates assigned patient service lines and therapeutic areas and assumes responsibility for the outcomes of the pharmacy care programs in assigned practice areas. Maintains evidenced-based expertise in specialty pharmacy practice (consistent with national pharmacy training standards) that is aligned with the needs of assigned clinical pharmacy service roles and patient care areas.
Teamwork and Inter-professional Collaboration Presents to assigned areas on time and ready to work and does not exhibit excessive unscheduled absenteeism. Ensures continuity of care between shifts, among pharmacy staff assignments, and across pharmacy practice areas. Supports other pharmacy operations and areas outside of current assignment. Teaching, Training, Precepting, and Mentoring Mentors new staff and assists with training of all staff as requested. Develops and maintains quality training opportunities and relationships for teaching and precepting pharmacy students and residents. Actively precepts and mentors pharmacy students (IPPE and APPE) and pharmacy residents (PGY1 and PGY2 residents if applicable). Demonstrates desire and aptitude for teaching and mentoring experiential education, maintains mastery of quality preceptor attributes including the four preceptor roles. Completes preceptor skills assessment and development programs and actively demonstrates preceptors skills credentials from approved sources. Delivers or mentors trainees to deliver effective evidence-based education to other healthcare providers.
