Product Development Associate

Our client, a creative design and manufacturing firm, is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Product Development Associate to join their team on a temp-to-hire basis. This is an exciting opportunity to own the product lifecycle and collaborate cross-functionally in a dynamic, design-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own the full product development process from concept through production.
  • Manage multiple SMU programs with urgency and efficiency.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure on-time sample delivery.
  • Source fabrics, trims, washes, and printing techniques through overseas suppliers.
  • Track and manage development using a comprehensive WIP chart.
  • Ensure accuracy of art matrixes and tech packs aligned with design vision.
  • Set up and maintain cost sheets, SMS WIPs, and fabric WIPs.
  • Collaborate with production and the PD director to achieve target costs while honoring design intent.
  • Communicate daily with vendors and track sample and development submissions.
  • Coordinate approvals for strike offs, handlooms, lab dips, fabrics, and trims.
  • Maintain organized fabric and trim libraries.
  • Review development progress, flag outstanding issues, and complete handover checklists.
  • Process all samples with technical design to ensure they meet spec and quality standards.
  • Manage individual sample budgets to ensure cost control and program efficiency.
  • Input and update all product data in Centric PLM with accuracy and timeliness.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Associate degree in Design, Product Development, or Merchandising.
  • 3+ years of experience in product development.
  • Strong knowledge of apparel business, product creation process, and material construction for knits and wovens.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, and Centric PLM.
  • Must be available to work on-site in Cypress, CA.

Job Description:
This Senior Designer, PD position will drive the product and creative strategy and execution of product categories for the selected territory. They will review and manage all product submissions, evaluating them for Product Integrity, Brand Integrity and Character Integrity - following all required BA and Franchise guidelines. The Senior Designer must be able to work on multiple Creative and Product Development functions, including product design, graphic design, typography, trend research, pitches, and presentations, as well as creative tools to support licensees in their development.

Presents creative workshops on a regional level in partnership with Category for licensees. Creates pitch and POV boards for Licensees, Category and Retailers.

Key Responsibilities:
Design & Trend Direction:
• Identify and apply trend to product and understand how our franchises work within key market trends.
• Translate our IP into market right graphic designs and product, while following franchise guidelines.
• Develop and design Creative/Product Development POV (point of view) boards for top DTRs and licensees, interpreting trend information into salable design concepts, while reinforcing brand image and art application.
• Follow established timelines and key dates for the creative deliverables. Adhere to strict production schedules when designing and managing in-house resources and vendors in the creation of all art.
• Understand and execute product development strategies, product design, print and pattern development, color, and typography.

Product Development:
• Represent WBCP PD department to licensees by conference call, presentations, visit their offices or plants and internal meetings for the purpose of reinforcing WBCP's creative brand standards on product. Review new products and suggest improvements in the design or application of art and design concepts. Provide creative input, direction and guidance to all licensees and sales Account Executives on all properties.
• Support on creative brainstorms to present new creative directions, trends and to help licensees in the creation of products in all categories.
• Pro-actively evaluates licensee's schedules and manufacturing processes to facilitate their compliance with our product approval processes;
• Participate in meeting with Category to train licensees and its product development teams on how to use art guides and design kits in order to maximize the use of all materials that are developed to support our properties;
• Holistically manage product development efforts to ensure proper differentiation between licensees, retailers and franchises.
• Work closely with category managers to produce fresh, compelling designs that meet the business needs / strategies.

• Provides Starlabs training, on-boarding and support to licensees.
• Obtains all necessary third-party approvals from Global Franchise, Global Creative, Category, Regional Marketing, Senior Management, Legal, Talent to ensure proper feedback is communicated to licensees.
• Performs Brand Assurance activities on Starlabs Approval Platform, with knowledge of the manufacturing process and a knowledge of Warner Bros Discovery policies and procedures, reviews and provides detailed comments on the concept, preproduction and final samples submitted by licensees on items including but not limited to product, packaging, commercials, POP and POS;
• Obtains a one-on-one relationship with licensee counterpart, as well as the licensee designers (artists, sculptors, etc.) to ensure collaboration and a smooth working approval process
• Partner with Brand Assurance team to ensure feedback to partners are cohesive, consistent and executable

Must Have Skills / Requirements

Overview

We are looking for a Director of Product Development who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment to work closely with the CPO, VP of Product Development and a team to build and implement a rolling 3-year innovation pipeline from concept to launch. Our ideal candidate has a high level of agility, energy and technical expertise plus a proactive mindset, curiosity, and a passion for the beauty industry.

The ideal candidate has developed top performing color cosmetics and skincare products within the prestige or celebrity beauty space and has expertise in relevant trends and innovation, ingredients and clean product development. This position will be responsible for the innovation, development, evaluation and execution of new product development and formula improvements across multiple product categories.


What You’ll Do

  • Drive day-to-day development of all new launches (core and promotional) with external partners

  • Partner with Project Management to develop and communicate timeline expectations and key milestones to vendor and ensure timing is met

  • Create disruptive product concepts in close collaboration with the CPO and VP of Product Development and Innovation and Founder that generate new opportunities for brand growth

  • Write development briefs and product profiles with both conceptual and technical expertise

  • Lead weekly meetings and efficient project management with contract manufacturing partners

  • Travel to contract manufacturers for on-site formula development, shade matching, pilot/scale up, and production batching, as needed

  • Oversee safety and stability testing to ensure product requirements are met

  • Drive cross functional communication with Packaging, Regulatory, Marketing, Finance and Operations to define product concepts, budgets and all necessary deliverables for completion of all development programs

  • Manage consumer insight data into product concepts, manage validation testing, claim testing and sensory testing to ensure all claim, ingredient stories and messaging are consistent to performance

  • Partner closely with external R&D labs, contract manufacturers. Attend meetings with contract manufacturing partners and travel as-needed for on-site visits to Contract Manufacturers to approve/provide feedback on sample submissions /batch approvals (LA-based, East Coast and International)

  • Facilitate cross-departmental coordination to ensure crucial aspects of product development are communicated with Marketing, Operations, Sales, Legal and Global Product Safety

  • Attend industry events, trade shows and supplier meetings to stay abreast of innovation/trends and technologies

  • Manage and report all clinical, sensory and consumer testing for products in development

  • Work with team to ensure compliance with all regulations

  • Understand Haus Lab’s product portfolio and continuously analyze productivity, category assortment and recommendations

  • Responsible for completing competitive analysis monthly, highlighting relevant trends, consumer insights and opportunities across and skincare categories

  • Assist with resolution of quality or production issues to ensure on-time launches

  • Manage new and/or reformulation development across multiple color cosmetic projects (various product formats) concurrently


What We Are Looking For

  • 8+ years of beauty product development experience with an emphasis on prestige color cosmetics. Skincare experience is a plus

  • Proven track record driving successful product launches from concept to customer

  • Leadership experience mentoring manager-level direct reports

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Strong project management skills and cross-functional communication to ensure projects meet timelines and budget

  • Have a passion for making data-driven decisions regarding product

  • Must be organized, have impeccable attention to detail and a strong multitasker

  • Must be a strategic thinker, flexible, self-starter, and possess an entrepreneurial spirit

  • Team player, reliable partner, and collaborative thinker is a must

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, up to 25% as needed

  • Ability to be in office 3 to 4 days per week
