Sheet Metal Mechanic Job Description

Overview:

Fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal products and equipment, such as ducts, control boxes, and furnace casings. Work may involve any of the following: setting up and operating fabricating machines to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal; shaping metal over anvils, blocks, or forms using hammer; or inspecting, assembling, and smoothing seams and joints of burred surfaces. Includes sheet metal duct installers who install prefabricated sheet metal ducts used for heating, air conditioning, or other purposes.

High Level Job Functions:
  • Determine project requirements, including scope, assembly sequences, and required methods and materials, according to blueprints, drawings, and written or verbal instructions.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference lines on material, such as roofing panels, according to drawings or templates, using calculators, scribes, dividers, squares, and rulers.
  • Maneuver completed units into position for installation and anchor the units.
  • Install assemblies, such as flashing, pipes, tubes, heating and air conditioning ducts, or furnace casings.
  • Select gauges or types of sheet metal or nonmetallic material, according to product specifications.
  • Drill and punch holes in metal, for screws, bolts, and rivets.
  • Fasten seams or joints together with welds, bolts, caulks, metal drive clips, or bonds to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items.
  • Fabricate or alter parts at construction sites, using shears, hammers, punches, or drills.
  • Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, or smooth surfaces, seams, or joints of assembled parts, using hand tools or portable power tools.

**Job Title:** **Sheet Metal Mechanic**

**JOB SUMMARY:** MSI-CAC seeks a Sheet Metal Mechanic to be responsible for all aspects of HVAC - Sheet Metal functions including performing and coordinating the installation, repair and service of HVAC - Sheet Metal systems on a commercial job site.
**ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**
+ Performs various field and shop tasks associated with the HVAC sheet metal trade.
+ Installs, renovates, and repairs commercial/industrial HVAC air distribution systems.
+ Organizes material and manpower needs for jobs/projects.
+ Understands correct application of field and shop equipment to job completion.
+ Layout duct work (as well as fittings and specialty items) to accommodate job specifications.
+ Coordinates with other trades in efficient and timely job completion.
+ Performs related work as required.
+ Ensures safe work practices and adheres to safety rules/policies.
**QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Successful completion of accredited Sheet Metal Apprenticeship Program highly desired.
+ At least four years practical HVAC sheet metal fabrication experience in a shop and/or field setting.
+ Accomplished in application of basic math and geometry.
+ Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and generalconstruction environment.
+ Be able to read and understand all phases of blue prints and shop drawings (architectural, structural andmechanical).
+ Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment used in the sheet metal trade.
+ Be familiar and able to order correct on-the-job training to apprentices.
+ Physical activities of standing, balancing, climbing stairs & ladders, walking and lifting of weights of 50 lbs. or more are required in daily performance of job. Use of upper extremities required for forward and overhead reaching, pushing and pulling, and material handling. Use of torso and lower extremities required for kneeling, crawling, stooping, twisting, and squatting.

**Overview**
The Sheet Metal Mechanic is responsible for conducting the installation of metal/board HVAC systems.
**Responsibilities**
+ Assembles and installs metal duct and fiberglass board.
+ Blue print reading and understanding of sheet metal shop drawings.
+ All phases of duct installation (spiral, rectangular, double wall, welded).
+ Understanding of different connectors that are used.
+ Hanger layout as well as some field measuring.
+ Organizes work area and maintains all hand tools.
+ Lifts heavy materials at heights.
**Qualifications**
+ Minimum of 6 months experience in any types of sheet metal and fiberglass, duct work installation on commercial/residential projects.
+ Must have own Sheet Metal hand tools, company supplies power tools.
+ Must be able and willing to follow job-site instructions.
+ Lift heavy materials and not be afraid of heights.
+ Effective verbal and written communication skills.
+ Detail-oriented and willing to tackle various ongoing projects in a fast-paced environment.
+ Versed in the industry and the Company's competitors.
+ Ability to multitask and perform duties outside of the scope of work when necessary.
+ OSHA 10 or 30.
+ Ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and/or poles.
+ Climbing stairs.
+ Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.
+ Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
+ Operating machinery and/or power tools.
+ Outdoor elements such as precipitation, heat, cold, and/or wind.
+ Noisy environment.
+ Light to heavy work that includes adjusting and/or moving objects from 20-100 pounds.
+ 0-5% of time will be spent traveling to job site(s)/office location.
**Pay Range**
USD $19.18 - USD $25.64 /Hr.
