QA Engineer (Artificial Intelligence)

OVERVIEW

This QA Engineer position is for a hands-on professional with experience in testing and automating AI/ML pipelines. The ideal candidate is someone who has worked closely with machine learning engineers and data scientists to ensure the quality and reliability of AI/ML models and systems. You will join a dynamic team passionate about innovation, learning, and applying cutting-edge technologies to deliver high-quality AI solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement QA strategies tailored for AI/ML solutions, including models, APIs, pipelines, and agent-based architectures.

  • Create and maintain automated and manual test cases for model validation (accuracy, bias, robustness, explainability, drift).

  • Collaborate with AI engineers, data scientists, and product teams to define success criteria, acceptance standards, and performance metrics.

  • Validate model outputs and system behaviors against business and ethical guidelines.

  • Perform regression, integration, stress, and adversarial testing of AI models and systems.

  • Identify, log, and track bugs and anomalies, ensuring timely resolutions.

  • Support monitoring production AI systems to detect model performance degradation (concept drift, data drift, hallucinations).

  • Ensure compliance with internal AI governance standards, responsible AI principles, and regulatory requirements.

  • Contribute to building automated AI testing frameworks, pipelines, and synthetic data generation systems.

  • Document testing procedures, results, and quality assessments clearly and effectively.

Must Haves:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 2+ years of experience in quality assurance, specifically testing AI/ML applications.

  • Experience with the following:

    • Hands-on skills with Python and relevant AI/QA libraries (Pytest, Unittest, Great Expectations, MLflow, Deepchecks, etc.).

    • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn).

    • Experience with test automation tools and frameworks.

    • Knowledge of CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar).

    • Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration systems like Kubernetes.

    • Familiarity with version control systems like Git.

  • Strong understanding of software testing methodologies and best practices.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Bonus Attributes:

  • Experience with testing data pipelines and ETL processes.

  • Experience testing agentic AI frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, Autogen, etc.).

  • Cloud platform experience; GCP, AWS or Azure are acceptable.

  • Experience with performance testing tools.

  • Understanding of data science concepts and statistical analysis.

  • Certifications in software testing or cloud technologies.

**Role:** As a Principal Staff Artificial Intelligence Engineer within the Simulation and Testing organization, you will play a critical role in leading the strategy and execution of simulation-based validation efforts for autonomous vehicle development. Your expertise will guide a team of engineers in defining best practices and driving innovation in testing and verifying the safety and performance of autonomous systems in complex simulated environments. You will be responsible for shaping the future of our simulation capabilities and ensuring robust validation methods are implemented effectively.

+ Lead the design, development, and implementation of simulation-based validation strategies for autonomous systems, ensuring safety and performance metrics are met.

**Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):**
+ Master's in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
+ 10 years of extensive experience in simulation and testing, preferably within the autonomous vehicle domain.
+ Proven track record in developing or testing large-scale Machine Learning (ML) systems, with a strong understanding of simulation platforms and methodologies.
+ Hands-on expertise in implementing robust validation methods and evaluation strategies, including defining relevant metrics and correlating simulation performance with real-world behavior.
+ Strong software engineering skills, particularly in programming languages relevant to simulation and testing.
+ Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentoring abilities, with a passion for driving innovation in autonomous technology.

+ Ph.D. in Robotics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
+ 15 years of extensive experience in simulation and testing, preferably within the autonomous vehicle domain.
**Compensation** **:** The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of the California Bay Area.
+ The salary range for this role is $225,000 - $344,800. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

**_Strategy and Leadership_**
+ Leads strategy development and execution of industry-leading AI and GenAI capabilities, processes, organization, systems, and talent development within the Data Science and AI Software Engineering teams.
+ Works with leaders across the enterprise to drive technology transformation to optimize domestic/global go-to-market launch planning strategies through innovative and highly strategic decisions and investments in AI/ML/GenAI/Agentic.
+ Leads a team of Directors who oversee data scientists, ML engineers, and AI product managers across multiple domains. Provides strategic direction, mentorship, and executive sponsorship to ensure alignment with enterprise goals and delivery of high-impact AI/ML/GenAI/Agentic solutions.
+ Develops and oversees the AI vision and adoption among federated analytics/AI departments across the organization and advocates a data-driven culture that rapidly drives business and customer value by leveraging AI/ML/GenAI/Agentic AI techniques.
+ Develops multi-year roadmaps and strategies to meet goals of maturity in data and AI governance, Enterprise and Functional Analytics, and data and AI fluency to support the acceleration and delivery of advanced analytic solutions to meet business needs; drives focus on technology, automation, productivity, and quality of service.
+ Articulates business vision and strategy and mobilizes the workforce to collaboratively reach evolving business objectives through internal and external relationships.
+ Champions technology and funding recommendations to senior management to ensure technology and value are maximized and meet business objectives.

**_AI/ML Development and Implementation_**
+ Develops Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) models and solutions that will provide key insights on our pipeline assets to drive global commercial strategies and create a competitive advantage by making better business decisions derived through strategic AI approaches.
+ Embeds AI in application development leveraging a product-centric approach.
+ Leads the development of cutting-edge methodologies in areas such as predictive and prescriptive modeling, time-series and causal inference, graph ML and network science, natural language processing and LLM fine-tuning, generative and agentic AI systems, and operations research (optimization & simulation).
+ Determines the key competencies, processes, organization, and systems required to build an industry-leading AI/ML/GenAI/Agentic AI capability.
+ Define and track success metrics such as model adoption, business value delivered, and time-to-insight acceleration.
**_Cross-Functional Collaboration_**
+ Partners with functional teams to develop a cross-functional product roadmap for data science, ML, predictive AI, GenAI, Agentic AI.
+ Partners with legal, compliance, and governance teams to ensure responsible AI development, including bias mitigation, explainability, and adherence to UPS's AI guardrails.
+ Interfaces externally with domestic/global areas in the development of the AI/ML/GenAI/Agentic AI strategy and guidelines for insight generation and usage.
+ Communicates verbally and in writing to business customers and senior leadership team with various levels of technical knowledge, educates them about our systems, and shares insights and recommendations that inform business strategies.
+ Develops and participates in the organization's Data and AI Communities of Practice.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**_Technical Expertise_**
+ Strong understanding of AI algorithms development processes, trade-offs, and limitations.
+ Deep expertise in data science, machine learning, statistical modeling, and AI platform technologies.
+ Extensive experience with modern AI frameworks, AI/XOps tools, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
+ Deep understanding of generative and agentic AI technologies.
+ Advanced knowledge of workflow tools, automation systems, and compliance frameworks is a plus.
+ Experience leading and overseeing enterprise advanced analytics projects in production at scale and implementing open-source or vendor products with or without the use of enterprise analytics/AI platforms.
+ Demonstrated ability to effectively advocate strategic direction around technical solutions to data science professionals, data engineering teams, and business audiences.
