Position Duties- Completes nursing assessment of patient conditions consistent with age and condition, including physical, psychological, social, developmental, and educational factors, to determine initial level of compliance with treatment plan per policy and unit guidelines. Performs ongoing patient and family assessments and identifies variations from diagnoses.
- Continually evaluates patient responses to care, teaching, and discharge plans. Documents patient progress in appropriate charts and shares observations and assessment outcomes with healthcare team and families to ensure timely communication and understanding of patient health status, progress, and ongoing needs.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing required activities within established parameters to ensure compliance with all applicable medication, storage and documentation standards, regulations, and requirements.
- Provides orientation to the unit, hospital systems, and processes to patients and family members to ensure familiarity with unit’s policies and requirements.
- Supervises patient care activities of assigned team members and delegates activities appropriate to knowledge, skill, and competency. Provides timely feedback and review of care delivery to ensure maintenance of patient safety, infection control procedures, therapeutic environment, and team members’ performance level, maintaining confidentiality as appropriate.

Summary The Orthopedic Surgery Department staff surgeon reports to the Chief, Orthopedic Surgery Section, Surgical Service. A staff surgeon routinely performs outpatient and inpatient orthopedic surgery examinations, determines diagnoses, and initiates treatments based on orthopedic surgery education and standards of care. The staff orthopedic surgeon serves as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees. Responsibilities Phoenix VA Orthopedic Surgery Purpose: Provide excellent musculoskeletal surgical care to all Veterans. Mission: Deliver high-quality, comprehensive musculoskeletal surgical care in an an efficient and timely manner to improve functionality and quality of life to all Veterans. Vision: Aggressive pursuit of best evidence-based, state-of-the-art musculoskeletal surgical care to all Veterans through continued research, education, and innovation. Clinical duties include but are not limited to Operating Room (experience in wide variety of standard orthopedic surgical procedures and operations including, but not limited to, arthroscopy, basic fracture stabilization, soft tissue repair), in-patient rounds, Emergency Room and Outpatient Clinics. The orthopedic surgeon will be able to perform a wide variety of orthopedic surgical procedures with preferred capabilities to include total hip and knee arthroplasties, including revision arthroplasty. May also supervise residents from the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency Program, Mayo Clinic and other training programs, as well as medical students from University of Arizona, Mayo Clinic and Podiatry students and residents who rotate through the Orthopedic Surgery Service. Required to participate in all surgical quality/performance improvement initiatives as appropriate, including VASQIP. Participate in orthopedic surgery night call and perform emergency orthopedic surgical procedures. Responsible for providing patients with education concerning their disease state and treatment regimen. The orthopedic surgeon will assess Veterans' risks and benefits associated with surgical procedures, and will provide appropriate informed consent so Veterans fully understand the important risks and benefits of surgical intervention. Complete all electronic, clinical, daily charting and documentation required by the Medical Center in a timely manner as appropriate, including outcomes reporting as appropriate. Consult with Medical Center staff on many patient care issues. Strongly enforces a policy of full disclosure. If there is a complication in the course of a patient's care, the general surgeon will discuss the untoward event, including the patient's options for second medical opinion or legal action, and will document these discussions in the chart (CPRS). Report administratively and clinically to the Chief of Orthopedic Surgery. In addition, this individual may report to the Chief of Surgery for the program(s) to which she/he is assigned. The Department hosts a fully accredited ACGME General Surgery Residency Program. The surgery department is seeking a clinical based vascular surgeon. General summary of clinical practice entails staffing of outpatient clinic, open vascular surgery, endovascular interventions, and vein ablations.
The preferred candidate must be board certified/eligible in Vascular Surgery. The candidate must have a strong interest in post-graduate education. Previous faculty experience in an academic environment is preferred. Extensive training and experience may satisfy either board requirement.
