OTS offers temporary, temp to hire, direct hire and emergency on-call opportunities including great benefits.

POSITION: Utility Process Control Specialist (Water Plant Operator)

SCHEDULE: Multiple Shifts Available

SALARY:

The salary range for this position with a Kansas Class IV water Supply System Operators certificate is $18.39 - $44 hourly.

JOB SUMMARY:

This is highly skilled, technical work to monitor and control production, pumping, and distribution systems to meet water drinking water system demands and water quality permit requirements for a plant that is being constructed in Wichita. This position exercises a high degree of decision-making regarding water treatment, flows, and pressures, based on independent judgment on how to maintain multiple water quality parameters within regulatory limits. Work includes supervising other staff when the Shift Supervisor is not present.

This position is eligible for progression through eight competency levels with increasing levels of responsibility and corresponding pay ranges. Progression requires a combination of plant experience and specialized training.

Experience in the water treatment industry is a valued asset. Compensation will be based on individual experience and determined at hire based on skills and competencies. The role provides additional opportunities for swift pay progression linked to the development of skills and competencies.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Operates and monitors production, pumping, and distribution systems from a control center utilizing data from the Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and the Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Monitors and maintains flows and pressures within all systems, including making independent decisions regarding how to balance flows to basins and reservoirs to maintain water storage requirements.
  • Monitors water levels in reservoirs and towers and makes appropriate pump changes.
  • Collects water samples and performs basic chemical tests. Utilizes results to make process change decisions.
  • Operates chemical feed equipment and controls feed rates, determines chemical dosage needs for varying conditions, and makes appropriate changes in chemical feed rates as required to maintain water quality.
  • Troubleshoots treatment problems associated with pH, solids level, mixing intensity, chemical dosage, and biological processes.
  • Monitors weather and forecasts daily water consumption and production requirements.
  • Operates and maintains a water treatment plant, including maintenance of equipment.
  • Records information about plant performance on log sheets or computer databases.
  • In charge of plant and staff when Shift Supervisor is not working.
  • The examples of work performed are not intended to be all-inclusive.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed, including but not limited to tasks performed by IEC Specialists, Water Quality Specialists, and O&M Specialists.

KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Must have achieved Level 5 on the Water Utility Competency Scale, or must be capable of achieving this within three years of hire, including:
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to producing and distributing safe drinking water
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of specialized water treatment operations
  • Knowledge of the functions and mechanics of pumps, chemical analyzers, and other equipment used in a water treatment plant, and ability to perform basic preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Ability to calculate flows and solution strengths.
  • Ability to collect data and make decisions based on data from on-line analyzers.
  • Ability to monitor, evaluate, and make decisions about SCADA information.
  • Ability to utilize GIS data for decision making.
  • Ability to interpret, validate, and analyze complex data.
  • Basic understanding of the principals of biology and chemistry as they relate to water treatment
  • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to airborne environmental nuisances associated with open grounds, exposure to chemicals used in water treatment, and equipment and machinery noise (with the use of earplugs).
  • Ability to walk variable distances multiple times per shift and climb stairs and ladders and to bend, twist, push, pull and reach as necessary to evaluate equipment/instrumentation function
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to exert up to 40 pounds of pressure to operate valves and fire hydrants.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments and representatives of outside agencies
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license
  • Ability to maintain a valid Kansas Class IV Water Supply System Operator certification or acquire within six (6) months of hire.

  • Ability to be available for after-hour emergencies including on-call duties.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent educational attainment required.
  • Plus at least two years of experience in water treatment and supply system operations or other industry in a position involving oversight of a treatment, production, or distribution process required(such as wastewater, natural gas, electric, chemical, pharmaceutical, or any other automated production).
  • Kansas Class IV Water Supply System Operator certification is required for select positions within our organization and preferred, but not mandatory for all roles. If a candidate possesses a valid Supply System Operator certification from another state, the applicant must complete the reciprocal process within the first six (6) months of hire. Candidates will be selected for hire based on position availability and organizational needs

The incumbent is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of sewage treatment plant equipment to meet NPDES regulations (specifically Eareckson Air Station Monthly Discharge Monitoring parameters).
**Essential Duties & Job Functions:**
+ Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of water source into the treatment plant and monitors all operational gauges to ensure proper plant operation.
+ Tests water samples to determine pH, iron, manganese, free chlorine, and turbidity, using pH meter, colorimeter, and turbidimeter.
+ Records data, such as water flow meters, chlorine feed rate settings, turbidity, and other lab tests.
+ Injects specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine and potassium permanganate into water and makes necessary feed rate adjustments as water quality changes.
+ Starts agitators to mix potassium permanganate and replenishes solution barrels when necessary.

**ChemTreat sales support opportunities are specific to water treatment and require an individual with knowledge applicable to the industry. This water treatment technician position is focused on maintaining the profitability of assigned customer accounts by performing ongoing monitoring and correction to prescribed water treatment programs at assigned accounts. Individuals are required to apply basic water treatment applications and solutions, while reporting results to ChemTreat Account Managers and plant operators.**
**Qualified individuals in this role are expected to offer professional and high-quality customer service at all times. Further, they need to have familiarity with performing basic water testing, taking measurements, and documenting results.**
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Routinely visit assigned accounts to perform water treatment analysis and inspect equipment**
**Inspect assigned customer systems according to contractual requirements**
**Build customer relationship and interface with plant operators**
**Escalate treatment program problems and out of spec results to direct supervisor for resolution**
**Utilize and maintain company equipment in good, clean working condition**
**Consistently calibrate pumps and perform repairs that restore chemical feeds**
**Monitor product feed rates and their relative impact on the water sample and make necessary adjustments to treatment program when gaps are detected**
**SUPPLEMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Communicate delivery and customer system issues to appropriate department**
**Enter results into software program and communicate results utilizing service reports**
**Assist in water-related system improvement projects**

**Primary Responsibilities** :
+ Maintain and monitor water treatment systems associated with HVAC equipment including cooling towers, boilers, chillers, and related components.
+ Test water for critical parameters such as pH, alkalinity, hardness, conductivity, chlorine levels, and biological contaminants.
+ Interpret test results and apply appropriate chemical treatments to prevent scaling, corrosion, and biological growth.
+ Maintain accurate records of water quality testing and chemical usage.
+ Perform regular maintenance on water treatment equipment, including pumps, filters, controllers, and dosing systems.
+ Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to water chemistry or equipment malfunction
+ Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental and safety regulations

**Basic Qualifications**
+ Ability to obtain/maintain TS/SCI w/ Poly Clearance
+ High school diploma or equivalent.
+ 2-4 years of relevant experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
+ Completion of a formal training program in automotive technology or a related mechanical field.
+ Hands-on experience inspecting, maintaining, and repairing a variety of vehicles and machinery, including:
+ Automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, forklifts, and buses.
+ Proficiency with diagnostic tools such as: Motor analyzers, pressure gauges, chassis charts, and factory service manuals.
+ Ability to disassemble, overhaul, and repair components including:
+ Engines, transmissions, clutches, starters, generators, alternators, differentials, and pumps.
+ Experience performing mechanical and electrical adjustments and repairs such as:
+ Valve grinding, brake adjustments, wheel alignment, wiring repairs, and lighting adjustments.
+ Ability to work independently with limited supervision and solve moderately complex problems.
