Our client, an environmental services provider, is searching for an analytical and growth-minded Controller to join their team (40 company-wide; 20m revenue) in Chico, CA. Their services help sustain operations for clients spanning across energy, agriculture, and industrial sectors. In this critical role, you will oversee daily accounting activities while also guiding business processes and strategic growth initiatives through financial reporting and budget management. They are looking to centralize accounting after working with a firm and are searching for a seasoned accounting professional to help as they focus on more operational oversight and leverage their ERP to create better reporting and analysis. As they continue to grow, this role could lead to overseeing direct reports but in the immediate future, this role will be very hands-on with about 60% of your time spent on routine accounting tasks. If you are looking for an opportunity solely focused on higher level functions with an accounting team to delegate to, this would not be the best fit. However, if you enjoy being in both a tactical and strategic role that gives you the runway to build your own path, this could be a perfect match. Their culture is rooted in collaboration, innovation, and employee empowerment. Your opinion will not only matter, it will be sought after. This is your chance to become a valued partner to a profitable, mission-driven company.
• Ensure daily accounting operations while supporting overall strategic direction
• Process accounts payable and receivable activities including collections
• Provide account statements and process bank deposits

• Complete monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliation and closing procedures
• Collect, monitor, and analyze financial information, investigating variances
• Support the onboarding of customers and vendors
• Evaluate monthly sales tax reports and complete sales tax registrations
• Facilitate company level and departmental level budget development
• Complete budget variance analysis to help ensure company profitability
• Create and maintain reports of KPIs for the executive team
• Assess operations and identify areas for operational efficiency
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting required
• 5+ years of progressive, higher-level accounting experience required
• Hands-on financial statement preparation experience required
• Experience leveraging historical data and market trends to create financial forecasts required
Who you are:
You value your role in providing strategic direction and financial expertise, especially to smaller businesses where your influence and impact are uncapped. You understand the balance between safeguarding resources while being nimble and creative to help achieve growth. Although you champion an environment with structure, you have an insatiable appetite for continuous improvement and do not shy away from being a process disruptor in the spirit of enhancing operations. That’s why you embrace new software integration and BI tools that allow you to visualize important patterns and potential gaps. Although you are driven by numbers, you can think beyond a spreadsheet acting as a detective; energized by putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. Your inquisitive nature and collaborative spirit have provided an unmatched combination for understanding the whys within an organization. While you enjoy the quiet solitude that can come with mining through ERP systems and completing transactions, you seek company environments that don’t just say they’re people-focused, they prove it. Ultimately, you gravitate toward leaders who encourage your curiosity and listen to your ideas. And in return, you fiercely protect their business as if it were your own.
