Bring your innovation to the frontlines at Saab, Inc.’s Surveillance Systems division in East Syracuse, NY. This Senior Mechanical Engineer role offers a unique opportunity to develop the next-generation, truck-mounted ground-based radar system. Working in parallel with design and manufacturing, this hands-on role will be building and shaping the future of defense technology.

Responsibilities will include but may not be limited to the following: 

  • Application of mechanical engineering principles for the design and development of mechanical components, assemblies and systems.
  • Develop CAD 2D and 3D models of electronic, mechanical and electro-mechanical components, assemblies and systems.
  • Documentation of design solutions including reports, engineering drawings and Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Present and discuss technical concepts, tradeoffs, analyses, designs, and performance estimates.
  • Interface with Systems Engineering and other disciplines to develop/define/implement customer requirements.
  • Follow through on full product lifecycle: development, prototyping, integration, verification, delivery, and support.
  • Incorporate Mechanical Engineering best practices Design for Cost, Maintainability and Manufacturability.
  • Identify, manage, and solve problems associated with mechanical engineering work products.
  • Apply experience and knowledge to resolve design, supplier quality, manufacturing, and field issues.
  • Follow company standard operating procedures and Quality System requirements.
  • Plan, organize, and estimate required effort for responsible tasks, including possibly writing Basis of Estimates (BOEs).
  • Provide effective communication across functional teams.
  • Work as key member of a cross-functional team to develop mechanical and electro-mechanical solutions.

Compensation Range: $99,100-$128,800

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in advanced mechanical design with broad application and a fundamental understanding of the product development life cycle.
  • Understanding of mechanical design philosophy and design process flow.
  • Fundamental understanding of industry accepted design methods and practices, including design spaces/tradeoffs, test data analysis, and requirement/specification change processes.
  • Significant product development background demonstrating a strong engineering aptitude and good problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve issues during design, development and execution of mechanical engineering activities.
  • Experience using SolidWorks, AutoCad, Creo, Ansys, MS Office (Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) to create drawings, documents, work products, and presentations.
  • Ability to update and review mechanical drawings for proper geometric dimension tolerancing (GD&T), accuracy, and completeness.
  • Strong written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven contributor on project teams to accomplish objectives.
  • Effective contributor in a team environment, providing technical leadership where applicable.
  • Ability to work independently to achieve technical and program requirements.
  • Ability to work with other engineering disciplines to contribute to a collaborative development environment.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain U.S. DoD SECRET security clearance.

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Prior experience with DoD or with U.S. government customers is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Military Standards, ruggedized equipment design, and environmental test requirements.
  • Knowledge of materials and corrosion control.

The ideal candidate possesses strong technical problem-solving skills, a desire to help others, and comfort training customers in both formal and on-the-job settings. Experience in a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) or Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) supporting advanced weapons systems such as: 14X, 1CX, 1D7, 1Z3, 2171, 2848, 2887, Electronics Technician or Fire Controlman.  This position offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge defense technologies and contribute directly to mission success.

Responsibilities include:

  • Diagnosing, troubleshooting, repairing, and debugging complex systems utilizing manuals, schematics, and reach back support for various electro/mechanical issues that may arise.

  • Troubleshooting and resolving complex issues independently or in collaboration with others.

  • Reporting design, reliability, and maintenance problems or bugs to design and software engineering teams.

  • Serving as the primary interface with customers while on site.
