ABOUT THE JOB!

The Principal Mechanical Engineer will join the New Product Development team and be responsible for leading the mechanical design and validation of electro-acoustic assemblies, intercoms, cable assemblies, and helmet mounted military products. Identify design issues and recommend design direction, goals, and planning tasks. Review designs and models for performance, DFM, DFA, and quality. Apply lean design and six sigma design for manufacturing plastic injection molded components, metal stampings and mechanical parts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and development of Electro-Acoustics products; boom assemblies, Electret Mics, mic capsules, hearing protection, intercom systems, and helmet mounted products for civilian and military applications.
  • Design, document and test new products and subsystem components.
  • Drive system capability forward on current and next generation products.
  • Develop the best innovative solutions to enhance product portfolio.
  • Prepare/Create 3-D models, sub-assemblies. final assemblies, detail drawings with material specs and BOMs.
  • Prepare and present engineering data to senior management and participate in design review meetings.
  • Contribute to bid and proposal efforts with design concepts, cost estimates and writing.
  • Transition products into high volume production.
  • Mentor, guide and be a technical resource for other mechanical engineers
  • Drive and perform as technical lead on development programs
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of electro-mechanical design
  • Acoustic Modeling - Modal/Frequency Analysis a plus
  • In Depth knowledge/experience of manufacturing processes': plastic injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal forming and additive manufacturing prototyping
  • Communicate effectively with all departments and value streams
  • Must have Advanced 3D CAD and FEA modeling; Solidworks preferred. (Surfacing, Part modeling, Detailing/Drawings)
  • Must be familiar with DFM and DMA best practices for transitioning products from design to production
  • Understanding of design and material best practices with respect to EMI reduction and challenging environments.
  • Knowledge of ASME 14.5Y for creation of technical drawings
  • Design for MIL-STD-810 environmental requirements, executing and documentation of testing
  • Experience functioning in an ISO9001 and/or AS9100 quality system
  • Able to support Program Management with schedule & budget creation and tracking

Position Summary

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience designing sheet metal parts for enclosures
  • Experience designing plastic parts, both prototype and production (injection molding)
  • Experience developing high-temperature systems for commercial or industrial use
  • Experience with basic electrical control systems is a plus
  • Model building experience is desirable
  • Adaptability: broad interest in science and technology with a willingness and interest in expanding into new fields and learning new techniques and skills

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Mechanical Engineer II will play a key role in improving our Home HD products and our patients’ lives. This individual will apply sound engineering principles in the support of our current product portfolio and will be involved in different parts of a product’s life, including but not limited to the feasibility evaluation for new features and products to improve the quality, performance, and cost of dialysis therapy. You will be part of a team with responsibility for supporting a specific product line. Close collaboration with manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and product management counterparts is key to quickly responding to issues, completing projects, and launching new products. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Analysis of mechanical systems, including geometric tolerancing and Finite Element Analysis for structural, fatigue, thermal, vibration, and acoustics 

  • Develop manufacturing drawings in accordance with applicable standards 

  • Construct and test / oversee technicians in constructing and testing of prototype systems 

  • Troubleshoot new designs and/or develop reliability improvements for existing designs 

  • Improve designs for reliability, manufacturability, and performance 

  • Participate in the development of product specifications and requirements documents 

  • Support and/or conduct Risk Analysis activities, including Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Operator Misuse Analysis (OMA), and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to ensure design- and process- related risks are identified and appropriately mitigated 

  • Work with Quality Assurance to maintain documentation in accordance with the approved internal Quality System that meets applicable GMP, QSR, ISO13485, and other requirements 

  • Support the design, development, testing, and/or use of complex automated and semi-automated assembly and test equipment 

  • Manage vendors to ensure rapid delivery of prototype components 

  • Create, test, and improve complex electro-mechanical components and assemblies for next generation home dialysis instruments. Components include pumps, motors, pneumatics, couplings, sheet metal housings, and PCBA mounting/cabling 

Skills:  

  • Proficient in Solidworks 3D modeling, standard analysis tools and methodologies, mechanical detailing, geometric tolerance analysis, and documentation is preferred 

  • Strong understanding of medical device development processes 

  • Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing 

  • Strong diagnostic & problem-solving skills desired, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis 

  • Experience maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information 

  • Experience with design of experiments 

  • Familiarity with fabrication methods such as machining, molding, sheet metal, and casting processes 

  • Demonstrated aptitude for practical application of mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical principles to system design.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:     

  • 2+ years of experience in product design, development, and/or testing of complex electro-mechanical products  preferred
  • Prior medical device experience strongly preferred
