RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and RN Service Leads, the Surgical Technologist works directly under surgeon/physician guidance to facilitate safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist must possess expertise in the theory and application of aseptic technique; demonstrate the ability to combine knowledge of human anatomy, the surgical process, and procedures including instrumentation and advancing technologies. The surgical technologist will be able to anticipate the needs of the surgeons/physicians by constant attention and assessment of the surgical process and patient condition to promote a safe, expedient, quality surgical outcome. These skills will facilitate the surgeons/physicians' performance of minimally invasive surgical procedures, invasive surgical procedures, and invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The Surgical Technologist must be able to function proficiently in a variety of surgical specialty services. The Surgical Technologist provides patient care primarily through service to the physician/ surgeon. The Surgical Technologist is expected to have an understanding of the procedure being performed, anticipate the needs of the surgeon/physician, and have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure, while monitoring the sterile field. The Surgical Technologist is accountable for maintaining skills and knowledge to function commensurate with their assignments and within the policies and procedures of the department. This description covers the essential functions of the position. The incumbent is expected to perform other similar and/or related duties as assigned after demonstrating competency. QUALIFICATIONS: This position is part of a career ladder and level will be determined by the organization. Unless otherwise required by certification, licensure or registration, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the minimally required education and/or experience listed. The PCT will perform a variety of technical tasks and bedside functions. Responsibilities include but are not limited to Direct Patient care; hygiene, skin care, mobility, and monitoring. Will have multi-skills for what is needed on the unit, to perform all duties relative to phlebotomy and EKGs. The PCT is expected to manage equipment and perform or assist in all procedures on the unit. The incumbent is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned. Job Responsibilities: 1) Provides age-appropriate care to patients.Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages for the following age groups and applies developmental theories and concepts when implementing care for patients. 2) Monitors basic physiological parameters.Takes and records routine vital signs within the specified timeframe as indicated by periodic review of documentation. Obtains and documents weights/heights, abdominal girths, and head circumference (Pediatric Service) as per physician/nurse order 100% of the time as indicated by quarterly review of 5 records. Consistently reports any significant deviations in vital signs as outlined in the procedure immediately.   • Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters onto the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification   

  • Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including completion of Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and, if applicable, progress notes.   

  • Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition directly to the registered nurse or supervisor.

  • Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy. Report any change or unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.

  • Perform and document any intervention for unusual patient status and document patients' response to intervention.

  • Evaluate patients’ vascular access during treatment including arterial and venous monitoring pressures, provide appropriate intervention as needed, document and report any unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.

  • Obtain all prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection.   

  • Ensure that all blood spills are immediately cleaned with appropriate disinfectant according to facility policy.

  • Monitors patients performing self-care under the supervision of RN.

Staff Related

  • Assists in training of applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under the supervision of a nurse.

Education/Communication:

  • Follows all organization business policies, procedures and systems incorporated into training, including compliance with ethical business practices

  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics - ensure all areas are safe and clean.

  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments according to facility policy.

  • Conduct all tasks necessary for preparation for dialysis treatment and document where appropriate and perform all required pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing including Pressure Holding (PHT).

  • Initiate Solution Delivery System (SDS) system.

RECORD KEEPING:

  • Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.  

  • Enters all treatment data into the designated clinical application in an accurate and timely manner.   

  • Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensure nursing signatures are documented, and ensure

omitted entries are completed or corrected by appropriate staff.

TRANSITIONAL CARE UNIT:

  • Follows all newly admitted patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis and coordinating their transitional dialysis care 

  • Reinforces all education and care related matters as it relates to the new patient     as allowed by state law

  • Liaisons with appropriate FKC staff members to provide the best patient experience including making sure all disciplines are scheduled to see patient according to plan.   

  • Assists in assuring patient understanding or home dialysis products, benefits of home and how home dialysis can work for them.

  • Sets and preforms a treatment on all machines used in the transitional care unit.

  • Assist in assuring patient understanding of treatment options including demonstration of the peritoneal dialysis set-up.

  • Assists with coordination of transition to patient’s modality choice.   

  • Assists with supply ordering and inventory for TCU

    Day to day work includes desk and personal computer work and interaction with patients facility staff and physicians.  The position requires travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community.  Travel to regional Business Unit and Corporate meetings may be required.

    The work environment is characteristic of a health care facility with air temperature control and moderate noise levels.  May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases/materials

    The position provides direct patient care that regularly involves heavy lifting and moving of patients and assisting with ambulation.  Equipment aids and/or coworkers may provide assistance.  This position requires frequent prolonged periods of standing and the employee must be able to bend over. The employee may occasionally be required to push and/or pull equipment exerting up to 15 pounds of force.  The employee may be required to lift and to lower solutions on a frequent basis of up to 30 lbs. and on an occasional lift basis up to 40 lbs. as high as 5 feet.  There is a two-person assist program and material assist devices for the heavier items.

     

    EDUCATION

    • Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification or High School diploma or G.E.D. and must meet certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
    • All appropriate state licensure education and training (if any) required. 

    EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS

    • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred.
    • Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of the FMCNA dialysis training program and successful completion of CPR certification.

    Qualifications

    Education and/or Experience Required:
    • Education Required: High School diploma, GED equivalent, current enrollment in an accredited ASN or BSN degree program for registered nurses, or higher level of education that would require a High School diploma.
    • Experience Preferred:
      Successful completion or enrollment in a Certified Nurse's Aide training program, completion of a Medical Assistant program, or EMT certification strongly preferred.
    • Minimum of one year pediatric PCA experience preferred.
    License and/or Certification Required:
    • BLS/CPR, American Heart Association, required within 2 weeks of hire and must remain current at all times.
    • Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certification by State of Connecticut preferred.
    • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training certification required within 3 months of hire and maintained thereafter.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    Knowledge of:
    • Basic medical terminology preferred.

    About the Team

    MS6 is a very teamwork oriented, fast paced inpatient floor. We provide care to both medical and surgical patients, and specialize in the care of children with complex gastrointestinal and nephrology conditions as well as eating disorders. We work closely with both the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units as we are the next step for children graduating out of the ICU environment. We value continuity of care and build strong trusting relationships with our patients and their families. We pride ourselves on our talented, warm and friendly team and look forward to welcoming a new team member!
