Summary

SUMMARY:

Directs and oversees all activities of the Patient Care Services division for Nursing Operations and Behavioral Health (BHU), in order to ensure quality patient care. Participates in the formulation, revision, interpretation and administration of the vision, philosophy, policies, and procedures of the Patient Care Services Division at NWHC. Collaborates with the Vice President of Patient Care Services toward the accomplishment of the objectives of the division, the Hospital, and other LifeBridge facilities. Works under the direct supervision and direction of the Vice President Nursing/CNO.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures effective operations of division, department, and service areas. Mentors and coaches managers and staff in leadership skills and critical thinking abilities, to ensure professional growth. Leads development of policies, procedures, and production and quality targets to ensure effective and efficient service, quality patient care, and compliance with standards of the hospital, external licensing, accreditation, and regulatory bodies. Oversees or performs staff hiring, establishment of performance objectives and assessment, appropriate administration of Human Resource policies, and maintenance of good staff relations. Establishes unit educational goals; provides training opportunities and ensures that staff meet continuing education requirements for licensure, registration, and accreditation. Ensures the establishment of employee work groups, providing a framework for employee participation and decision-making. May perform the duties of the Vice President as directed in his/her absence.
  • Considers the Hospital's strategic plan and develops and implements department/divisional plans to contribute to the overall Hospital goals. Participates in the strategic planning process for assigned division or department; is accountable for developing plans that support the organization's strategic plan. Leads staff in identifying customer needs; ensures integration into strategic plans and operations and directs development of excellent customer relations. Consults with other healthcare personnel and organizations to keep informed of trends in healthcare, management, patient care practices, hospital activities, and new programs in order to integrate new concepts and practices into operations. Designs, implements, and monitors systems necessary for management of patient care in a timely and satisfactory manner. Establishes annual and long-term goals and strategic plans for division/department; develops and revises supporting programs, plans, and services. Participates in the development and implementation of program marketing plans to ensure that community and targeted populations are aware of the Hospital and its services.
  • Develops collegial relationships with medical faculty and private attending physicians. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with medical staff and other departments to improve service and enhance quality. Actively seeks feedback from physician users about services provided in the area and engages physicians in performance improvement activities. Listens to physician feedback from all avenues (e.g., executive management team, physician liaison) and actively pursues communication/improvement opportunities with that physician.
  • Actively participates in the budgeting process and in budget monitoring/corrective action process to meet respective targets. Develops financial projections; prepares and manages budgets to ensure optimum financial performance of assigned units, departments, or service areas. Leads division/department in a cost-effective manner, with a focus on labor and supply management. Assesses long-term capital and operational needs and ensures plans are in place to address these needs. Continuously manages performance against fiscal plan. Recommends and/or develops business plans for proposed and existing programs in collaboration with others. Identifies major budget variances and financial trends; recommends potential areas of savings and revenue enhancement.
  • Establishes and implements systems to monitor and improve key clinical and financial metrics. Collaborates with staff to direct the performance improvement process for Patient Care Services and other divisions/departments. Monitors performance of division/department/service area and oversees or performs data collection and reporting on unit activities and performance. 
  • Analyzes information and implements appropriate improvements. Ensures that required monitoring (e.g., Patient Safety Goals) are completed based on relevance of goal to area of responsibility. Ensures PI indicators are outcome-oriented and evidence-based, with the necessary changes in practice implemented based on results.
  • Communicates effectively and promptly with internal and external customers, in all forms (written, verbal, email). Acts as a liaison between various departments and programs through participation in intra/interdepartmental meetings or work groups. Ensures that information is communicated in the proper forum to all in need of the content. Displays a commitment to the value of teamwork by building strong relationships with patients, families, co-workers, and the surrounding community, and by being cooperative and collaborative in the performance of responsibilities to promote a unified and spirited workplace. Establishes and uses appropriate communication channels to inform staff of Hospital plans and for staff empowerment and inclusion in decision-making and unit management.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree required; Master's in Nursing preferred
  • 7+ years of relevant experience; clinical background in behavioral health/psych nursing or nursing operations is preferred
  • American Heart Association CPR (BLS) required
  •  Registered Nurse License (RN) — current Maryland license or eligibility to obtain Maryland license
  • APRN - Clinical Nurse Specialist License preferred

Job Summary:
To assess, diagnose, and treat patients with hearing, balance and related disorders.
Essential Responsibilities:
+ Evaluates patients audiologic function, interprets findings, and reviews test results with patient or responsible adult.
+ Documents patients case history, test results and recommendations for follow up in the medical record and reports results and recommendations to referring physician and/or primary care physician.
+ Counsels patients about treatment options for hearing loss and refers patients to ear, nose and throat department for consultation when appropriate.
+ Counsels patients about management of chronic tinnitus.
+ Educates patients about hearing conservation.
+ Evaluates patients vestibular function when referred for dizziness, vertigo, or imbalance.
+ Performs canalith repositioning maneuvers for patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and counsels patients about vestibular rehabilitation exercises when appropriate.
+ Performs and interprets electro physiologic and special tests of the peripheral and central auditory system.
+ Evaluates hearing status of infants and young children with an appropriate comprehensive battery of tests.
+ Counsels patients regarding hearing aid device options.
+ Evaluates patients hearing aids when appropriate and enters referrals for hearing aids for members with a hearing aid benefit.
+ Additional specialized duties performed to include: Programming and fitting implantable devices such as cochlear implants, bone anchored hearing aids (BAHAS) and similar devices AND/OR Fitting, programming, and troubleshooting hearing aids and assistive listening devices, including electroacoustic analysis and real-ear measures AND/OR Advanced vestibular assessment such as rotary chair, vestibular evoked myogenic potential VEMPS, posturography or video head impulse testing (vHIT).
