- The Material Handler is responsible for supporting the fabrication shop with various duties such as loading and unloading steel from trucks, transferring steel to production table, and using a forklift as needed.
Requirements:
- Must have experience with overhead crane
- Experience using and operation a forklift is required
- Experienced moving structural steel
- Maintain a positive work atmosphere by functioning and communicating in an effective manner with co-workers, clients, and supervisors
- Works in compliance with company's safety policies and procedures
- Must be flexible to work any schedule needed including overtime and Saturdays as needed
- Basic math skills are required
- Must be able to tolerate hot and cold working environment
- Must be able to stand on feet for up to 10 hours

PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The primary function of this role is to support warehouse operations and inventory management. In this role, you will take part in shipping and receiving using forklift, converting product to different packaged formats, taking inventory counts and housekeeping activities. This role helps ensure that areas of responsibility are clean, neat and organized, while work is being completed in the correct fashion. This person will report to and help support the Warehouse Manager and Production Planner in their efforts to fulfill on time, quality shipments.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Warehouse Operations
- Assist in daily scheduled productions, ensuring that processing work is performed in an efficient & proactive manner.
- Focus on both employee and food safety practices throughout all production activities
- Label products according to standards (Product Number, Product Name, Lot, Date, and other requirements)
- Monitor equipment and report any problems to supervisor
- Assist in inventory counts and reconciliations using scan guns and other technologies
- To account for inventory as it is received and brought to location
- When bringing inventory out of location for either production activities
- To account for product being shipped to customer locations
- Maintain the appearance of the facilities – both inside and out.
- Responsible for general sanitation functions:
- Clean, including sweeping, mopping, shoveling, dusting, and vacuuming both inside and outside the facility as needed.
Safety
- Lead, support and adhere to the Company’s Safety Program
- Decision making practices that focus on employee and facility safety
- Where trained, proactively identify and report to warehouse manager possible safety hazards.
Quality
- Adhere to all Quality Assurance standards.
- Decision making practices that focus and support food quality safety
- Ensure all products are stored in the conditions necessary to maintain quality.
- Ensure that products being produced meet all agreed quality standards and quickly recognize and report to supervisor any deviations from these standards minimizing rejections.
General Responsibilities

Fork Truck Operator - Shipping Team $21.79 Hour to train then $22.73 Hour plus shift differential
Opportunity summary: As Forklift Driver in our busy shipping bay or warehouse, you will be responsible for operating industrial forklift to track load and/or unload trucks for delivering the units to customers according to their requirements. You will also keep accurate tally of what is shipped to customers. We are a high-volume manufacturing plant and you will be part of a team that loads up to 60 trailers a day. You will also be responsible for all activities associated with safely operating the forklift in addition to participating in cross training efforts and sharing duties with other drivers. Our forklift drivers may also operate our banding machines to ensure pallets are ready to load.
This position is part of the union bargaining unit. This is not a closed shop, however you must respect the union contract and all plant rules. We work 12-hour shifts. OT is paid at time and ½ for over 40 hours worked. You will be scheduled 3-4 days or nights on with 3 days off. You may be asked to work beyond what is built into your normal schedule. Training and onboarding takes place on day shift and may last 60 days depending on your ability and readiness to move to the floor. You will most likely be asked to go to night shift or our swing shift. Our plant is not climate controlled.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
* Inspect forklift daily at the start of the shift ensuring all safety features are operational. Complete checklist documenting inspection.
* Safely track and move materials throughout the facility safely and efficiently
* Responsible for the overall safety and cleanliness of the equipment and work area.
* Assure all materials shipped and warehouse are handled in a manner that prevents damage
* Load and unload trucks according to department standards and customer demands.
* Use an RF scanner for receipts of returns or deliveries.
* Verify all counts, quantities, quality and descriptions of products and materials received, shipped or warehouse are what is expected.
* Service production lines, delivering products as requested.
* Properly palletize or shrink wrap a unit.
* Timely and accurate completion of paperwork associated with the movement of product & materials.
* Responsible for general cleanliness of the warehouse and loading docks.
* Perform regular inventory and cycle counts.
* Safely change forklift propane tanks and/or batteries as needed.
* Assist other departments as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.
What you need to succeed:
* High School diploma or G.E.D.
* Must have a valid driveru2019s license.
* Previous forklift experience in a high volume high speed environment preferred
* Forklift driver certification valid during the last 12 months is preferred, but we will teach you.
* Knowledge of machinery and how to identify issues and troubleshoot equipment preferred.
* Ability to learn proprietary software programs for the Corrugated Manufacturing systems.
* Must have ability to the basic ability to read and write in English. Must have the ability to read and interpret documents, comprehend simple instructions, follow maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
* Must have ability to perform basic arithmetic dealing with decimals, fractions, rations, etc.
* Ability to read a tape measure.
* Ability to communicate effectively to all employees and to customers, both verbally and in writing
* Must be able to maintain good attendance.
* Must be available to work overtime and weekends or other shifts.
* Must pass background checks and drug testing that includes THC.
* Physical demand will include the ability to sit for continuous hours, stand, walk, bend, kneel, navigate stairs though the entire shift and drive in reverse.
