Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Counsel, Employment & Labor Law to provide strategic, practical legal guidance on a wide range of employment and labor law matters across federal and state jurisdictions. This role will serve as a key advisor to HR and business leaders, handling issues such as hiring, employee relations, performance management, accommodations, and compliance with employment laws (e.g., Title VII, ADA, FMLA, FLSA). The ideal candidate will lead responses to agency investigations and pre-litigation disputes, draft and maintain employment policies and agreements, and proactively mitigate legal risk through training and process development. A Juris Doctor and at least nine years of U.S. employment law experience are required.

- Serve as a subject matter expert on federal and state employment laws (e.g., Title VII, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, NLRA) and provide day-to-day legal support and practical guidance to HR and business leaders on a wide range of issues, including hiring, discipline, terminations, leaves, disability accommodations, wage and hour compliance, performance management, employee relations, and internal investigations.
- Lead the strategy and execution for responding to and resolving agency investigations and pre-litigation disputes, including EEOC and state agency charges, DOL compliance reviews, wage claims, and private claims.
- Draft, review, and update employment policies, separation agreements, and other employment-related documentation to ensure legal compliance and consistency with company goals.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments and provide training and proactive guidance to reduce legal risk and ensure compliance.
- Build and maintain professional, trusted, productive relationships throughout the company and with external parties.
- Develop strategies to enhance efficient, scalable solutions and processes for providing legal services.
Minimum Requirements
Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school and 9+ years' experience as a practicing U.S. employment and labor law attorney.
- Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, with eligibility to meet in-house counsel registration requirements where applicable.
- Substantial employment litigation experience, including managing agency charges (EEOC, DOL), mediations, and court proceedings.
- Experience counselling HR and business leaders on employment and labor law matters.
Additional Or Preferred Qualifications
- Skilled in developing litigation strategies, managing external legal teams, and supervising litigation processes to successful resolution.
- Experience with internal investigations, including whistleblower and retaliation claims.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to partner with HR and business leaders.
- Agile Learner who is comfortable in a fast-paced environment and demonstrated ability to work efficiently, ability to balance legal risk with practical business needs, manage competing priorities, and exercise good judgment in making swift decisions with imperfect information

Pay Transparency
Maximus compensation is based on various factors including but not limited to job location, a candidate's education, training, experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value analysis including seniority and merit systems, as well as internal pay alignment. Annual salary is just one component of Maximus's total compensation package. Other rewards may include short- and long-term incentives as well as program-specific awards. The Legal Counsel provides tactical legal advice and support to internal clients, typically at the Director or Vice President level.
**Responsibilities**
+ Provide tactical legal advice and support to internal clients including PBM, pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, government programs, administrative support functions or other areas as assigned
+ Perform research, drafting and transactional work in support of legal matters; may manage litigation efforts for assigned business area
+ Advise internal clients regarding compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate policies; develop and facilitate legal training and investigate issues as needed
+ Provide client training on legal principles
+ Coordinate partnership with in-house and outside legal resources where appropriate
+ Other duties as assigned
**Education & Experience**
+ Juris doctor degree
+ Current license to practice law in Minnesota
+ 5 years of experience practicing as an attorney or related legal experience in a regulatory or compliance role, with a minimum of 3 years of experience working with managed care companies or other health care clients
