POSITION SUMMARY

The HFMG Laboratory Assistant position is responsible for providing quality laboratory diagnostic service and stewardship by performing support functions to ensure optimal support of the laboratory department.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITES
  1. Support the Laboratory Manager, Supervisor, Technologists, Scientists, Sr. Scientists and
  2. Phlebotomists in all phases of laboratory testing, particularly in, but not limited to: processing of lab specimens manually or using automated lab analyzers, labeling, sample management in electronic medical record, quality control, lab supply and inventory management, equipment maintenance, lab customer service support, and other tasks assigned by lab leadership team.
  3. May perform CLIA waived testing. Must meet the minimum qualification set forth by state & CLIA.
  4. May be assigned to support laboratory testing support to one of the following laboratory sections:
  5. Blood Bank, Core Laboratory, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular, Lab Supply Management, Lab Support Services, Pathology, Point of Care, or other sections as determined by laboratory leadership.
  6. Complies with all Health First, HF Laboratory policies and procedures, along with all pertinent federal and state accreditation agency requirements.
  7. Shows commitment to meet departmental goals & to continuously improve performance improvement metrics.
  8. Demonstrates the appropriate skill sets as determined by the Annual Competency Assessments.
  9. Availability to meet departmental staffing demands and demonstrates effective time management.
  10. Ability to perform basic computer skills pertinent to job performance.
  11. Monitors data management systems and inventory daily. Reports variances to the Supervisor.
  12. Assists in cleaning of laboratory equipment, emptying waste, discarding, retrieval & storage of specimens/lab records.
  13. Cross trains in other departments within the laboratory or as directed by supervisor.
  14. Complies with the Health First I-Care values and demonstrates effective communication with coworkers and management to include proper escalation when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: Current enrollment or completion of a post-secondary technical or clinical program in biological sciences or relevant fields.
  • Work Experience: One (1) year in clinical healthcare laboratory or any clinical healthcare setting.
  • Certification: Clinical Lab Assistant Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (CLA ASCP).
  • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: Laboratory Skills (Knowledge of pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phase of diagnostic lab testing).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Majority of time involves sitting or standing; occasional walking, bending, and stooping.
  • Long periods of computer time or at workstation.
  • Light work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 20 pounds with or without assistance.
  • May be exposed to inside environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting and/or low to moderate noise.

Quality/No Harm:
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients/customers, team members and yourself. Ensure the correct procedure is performed on the correct patient by verifying two forms of patient identification on "Every Patient / Every Time". Perform "time out" process prior to starting any invasive procedure. Adhere to ALARA principles of radiation safety. Knowledge regarding location of emergency equipment/supplies and how to use such equipment/supplies. Familiar with the Health First Emergency Kardex and responsibilities in relation to specified emergent codes. Responsible for hurricane preparedness and your duties as a Health First associate.
  • Follow Infection Control policies and procedures; practice aseptic and sterile techniques. Effectively document and communicate pertinent and required information. Report malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate department, fellow associate and management in a timely manner. Accurately complete all required documentation/forms - written/electronic (ex: patient history, pregnancy, IV contrast, procedural consent, MAR, safety portal, medication reconciliation, PACS. Review exam orders from medical charts and/or prescriptions prior to performing an exam. Obtain pertinent patient history from the requisition, the patient, the medical chart or other sources.
  • Perform procedure protocols, produce images consistent with image quality standards and follow all Federal, State and Regional healthcare regulations and adhere to Joint Commission/ACR standards. Properly position patients and uses appropriate technique. Assure that exam rooms are clean, neat, stocked and disinfected; and that equipment is clean, disinfected and ready for the next patient encounter. Follow proper image retrieval and file processes.
  • Participate in quality initiatives and offer suggestions for departmental improvements including departmental protocols, policies, and procedures. Accept additional responsibilities to assist with reaching departmental goals/initiatives. Attend staff meetings/in-services as required. Reads and signs off on all staff meeting minutes as required.
  • Properly identifies, prepares and/or administers medications that are within the technologist's scope of practice as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner.
  • Perform radiation safety tasks within required time limits and in accordance with BRC guidelines. Completes computer processing for the Nuclear Medicine diagnostic imaging procedures Performs therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures Prepares radiopharmaceuticals from cold kits Prepares and administers the correct radiopharmaceutical to the correct patient by the correct route in the correct dosage

  • Registered or registry eligible by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
  • Prior Nuclear Medicine experience preferred.
  • Must hold current AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintain.

- Experience working in Diagnostic Cardiac Cath Lab and Interventional Cardiac Cath Lab
- Experience with PACS
- Cardioversion, Pacemaker Insertion, and Tilt Table Study experience
- Angioplasty and Stent placement experience
- Dialysis Graft interventions (fistulograms/declots), Endovascular Interventions, and Upper and Lower Extremity Angiography experience
- Experience with special equipment such as Impella, Balloon Pump, CSI, Shockwave, and Penumbra preferred

Description:
Experience with the Xper recording platform is required.
Weekend shifts are required every other weekend or a total of 6 weekend shifts per 6-week period.
On-call requirements will be determined by need.
The clinician will not float outside their scope to meet facility needs.
Floating to sister facilities may be required if necessary.
Daily caseload per tech is unknown.
First-time travelers are accepted.
Flu vaccine is required with signed medical or religious exemptions only.
All travelers must purchase their own scrubs, which must be solid-colored with no logos or prints.
The charting system used is Sunrise, but no prior experience is required.
COVID-19 vaccine is required with medical or religious exemptions only.
Staffing and scheduling will require block scheduling.
Patient ages range from adults to geriatrics.
Additional interdisciplinary support includes IV Teams, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Services, Interpretation Services, Phlebotomy, Radiology, Social Services, Rapid Response Teams, Pharmacy, and Transportation.
Candidates must have a diploma from an accredited program in Cardiopulmonary Technology, Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist, Respiratory Therapy, Radiological Technology, EMS-P, or Surgical Technology.
ARRT and State License are not required.
The position requires accurate monitoring and a variety of advanced clinical skills in a fast-paced environment.
A collaborative team approach is essential for providing optimal patient care.
Candidates must have strong technical skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.

Job Description

**PURPOSE** **AND** **SCOPE:**
Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and training and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines. Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment. Supports the organization commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and CQI Activities, including those related to patient satisfaction and actively participates in process improvement activities that enhance the likelihood that patients will achieve the organization Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).
**PRINCIPAL** **DUTIES** **AND** **RESPONSIBILITIES:**
**Patient Related**
Education:
+ Assist other health care members in providing patient specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures where appropriate - Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and regarding disease process/access.
Treatment:
+ Welcome assigned patients and inquire as to their wellbeing since their last treatment.
+ Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and perform administration of heparin as delegated or as allowed by state law.
+ Obtain necessary pre and post treatment vital signs and weight and perform vascular access evaluation pre- treatment
+ Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
+ Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention as prescribed by physician order or as directed.
+ Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy.
+ Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion; perform all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment - document.
+ Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures and evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access - standing & sitting blood pressure
+ Obtain Hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings.
+ Evaluate the patient prior to discharge.
+ Perform and record Pre and Post dialysis evaluation, weight, and vital signs with initial identification
+ Responsible for calculating and entry of individual patients' dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal; treatment time; and UF modeling as prescribed.
+ Responsible for ensuring appropriate safety alarms are enabled, including Narrow Venous Limits, (NVL) 160.
+ Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters onto the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
+ Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including completion of Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and, if applicable, progress notes.
+ Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition directly to the registered nurse or supervisor.
+ Observe patient and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy. Report any change or unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
+ Perform and document any intervention for unusual patient status and document patients' response to intervention.
+ Evaluate patients' vascular access during treatment including arterial and venous monitoring pressures, provide appropriate intervention as needed, document and report any unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
+ Obtain all prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection.
+ Ensure that all blood spills are immediately cleaned with appropriate disinfectant according to facility policy.
+ Prepare, organize, and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.
+ Monitors patients performing self-care under the supervision of RN.
**Staff Related**
+ Assists in training of applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under the supervision of a nurse.
**Education/Communication:**
+ Follows all organization business policies, procedures and systems incorporated into training, including compliance with ethical business practices
+ Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics - ensure all areas are safe and clean.
+ Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, chair, equipment, and surrounding area between treatments according to facility policy.
+ Conduct all tasks necessary for preparation for dialysis treatment and document where appropriate and perform all required pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing including Pressure Holding (PHT).
+ Initiate Solution Delivery System (SDS) system.
**RECORD KEEPING:**
+ Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
+ Enters all treatment data into the designated clinical application in an accurate and timely manner.
+ Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensure nursing signatures are documented, and ensure
omitted entries are completed or corrected by appropriate staff.
+ Prepare initial patient chart for admission and compile paperwork for appropriate placement in chart.
+ Prepare/print lab requisitions for prescribed or stat Lab specimens according to laboratory destination.
+ Collect, label, appropriately prepare and store lab samples according required laboratory specifications.
+ Ensure collection of lab specimens by appropriate lab courier.
**INFECTION CONTROL:**
+ Assists in collecting information for infection control audits.
+ Supports staff and patient Adherence to infection control practices.
+ Follows infection control Policies and Procedures
+ Participates in and reinforces infection control education of patients and families under the direction of the CM or designee as allowed by state law.
**TRANSITIONAL CARE UNIT:**
+ Follows all newly admitted patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis and coordinating their transitional dialysis care
+ Reinforces all education and care related matters as it relates to the new patient as allowed by state law
+ Liaisons with appropriate FKC staff members to provide the best patient experience including making sure all disciplines are scheduled to see patient according to plan.
+ Assists in assuring patient understanding or home dialysis products, benefits of home and how home dialysis can work for them.
+ Sets and preforms a treatment on all machines used in the transitional care unit.
+ Assist in assuring patient understanding of treatment options including demonstration of the peritoneal dialysis set-up.
+ Assists with coordination of transition to patient's modality choice.
+ Assists with supply ordering and inventory for TCU

The employee may occasionally be required to push and/or pull equipment, exerting up to 15 pounds of force.
