Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) (5 RCP)

This 26-bed unit provides comprehensive high-tech intensive care to acutely ill adults with a wide variety of complex critically ill patients with multiple medical issues who demonstrate a deterioration of health requiring critical care nursing. Patient diagnoses include multi-system failure respiratory failure, severe sepsis, overdoses (OD), GIB, medical neuro, various cancers, and bone marrow transplants. State of the art technology is implemented in MICU including il-2 therapy, VV ECMO, CRRT, ventilators, vasoactive drugs and preforms many bedside procedures. MICU provides total patient care involving a multidisciplinary approach, in conjunction with state-of-the-art technology, for systematic assessment and improvement of care to the critically ill patients. In 2012 we were awarded a National award for outstanding achievement and leadership for elimination of Ventilator Associated pneumonia.

Characteristic Duties of our Staff Nurses include but are not limited to:

* Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness

* Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians for the Medical Surgical Oncology Unit (4JPP) within the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division. Our Medical-Surgical Services Division is one of the largest in the hospital, with more than 260 of our 811 beds assigned to medical-surgical care settings. The Medical Surgical Oncology Unit is a 44-bed adult medical-surgical oncology, urology unit. This unit is part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Holden Comprehensive Cancer center and Silver Beacon Award of Excellence Unit. This unit is ranked 43rd in the nation for cancer care according to US. News and World Report.

Surgical patients receiving post-op care for laparoscopic and complex oncology related surgeries including:

  • Thyroidectomies
  • Gastrectomies
  • Adrenalectomies
  • Splenectomies
  • Liver resections
  • Bowel resections
  • Melanoma excisions
  • Pancreaticoduodenectomies (Whipple procedure)
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  • Carries out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
  • Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
  • Performs special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
  • Assists with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
  • Directly provides for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
  • Turns, positions and ambulates patients.
  • Transports patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
  • Feeds patients, serves drinking water and nourishments, and records patients' intake.
  • Assists patients with bedpans and urinals and records output.
  • Participates in nursing care conferences; reports pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
  • Provides for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
  • Shares responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
  • May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
  • Cleans areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.

Summary

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing all required procedures in the cardiovascular department, operating specialized equipment including but not limited to the x-ray equipment within the cardiac catheterization laboratory and computer systems.

Job Duties

  • Operates all radiographic equipment utilizing the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle, maintaining a safe radiological environment.
  • Prepares and operates other equipment related to cardiac catheterization & angiography; i.e., ISTAT machine, AVOXimeter, Hemochron, etc.
  • Maintains radiographic equipment and x-ray rooms in proper working condition, reporting malfunctions and necessary repairs to supervisory personnel.
  • Provides direct patient care ensuring the quality and continuity of patient care.
  • Contributes to the efficient and fiscally responsible operation of the department.
  • Functions as a member of the team, including hemodynamic monitoring and assisting with physicians during procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supply inventory for the department, notifies appropriate person when stock is low.
  • Enters patient charges and reviews for accuracy if assigned.
  • Participates in on-call schedule, working as needed after normal operating hours.
  • Schedules cases as needed.
  • Pulls venous and arterial lines.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of cardiac catheterization/cardiovascular procedures and equipment is desirable.
  • Competent with information and computer systems.
  • Must obtain and maintain sedation and EKG competency annually.
  • Must take Medication Administration test at time of hire/transfer.

Professional Experience

  • Experience in cardiovascular or interventional radiology preferred.
  • One year experience in diagnostic imaging preferred.

Education

  • Education sufficient to obtain required licensure/certifications.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • Iowa Permit to Practice required. American Registry of Radiologic Technology required, certification as Cardiovascular Technologist preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), certification in accordance with American Heart Association required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), certification in accordance with American Heart Association required within 6 months of hire.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse and Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.

Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Partners with the RN and other healthcare team members to achieve patient care outcomes and goals of care, as identified in the plan of care.
  • Obtains records and/or accurately enters data into the EMR, as identified in the PCT Scope of Practice. Competency validation and documentation of skill performance is required.
  • Performs specific tasks as directed by the RN and other healthcare team members, following competency validation.
  • May assist with responsibilities of the Unit Secretary, per department expectations and appropriate competency validation.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living.
  • May assist in transporting medications that are not controlled substances from pharmacy delivery devices to medication storage areas on patient care unit, as well as transporting medications from patient care unit to pharmacy.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of patient and personal safety.
  • Incorporates St. Luke’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model in their daily care. 

Effective Communication

  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, healthcare team members and other customers. Verbal communication is clear and precise. Written communication is legible, if handwritten, and done in a timely manner using approved abbreviations.
  • Verbally presents factual, concise, and timely information and/or patient care data to the RN, the healthcare team, patients and/or family members in a professional manner.
  • Real-time EMR documentation is done in accordance with hospital and unit policies.
  • Hand-offs will be done with attention to detail and with safety as a high priority. Hand-offs are utilized to communicate patient treatment and assessment information, patient education needs, goals of care and other quality care measures at each change of caregiver or setting of care.
  • Collaborates with healthcare team to provide patient care.
    • Consults with RN and/or other healthcare team members, as appropriate.
    • Obtains instruction and supervision, as necessary, when implementing new or unfamiliar tasks or duties.
    • Complies with established department routines, policies and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Maintain current BLS certification
  • Writes, reads, speaks, and comprehends fluent English
  • Be able to complete a basic computer course on the Electronic Medical Records

Patient Care Technician

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking to hire 50-100% Patient Care Technicians in the Emergency Department (ED). Under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses, the ED Patient Care Technician will perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care.

Duties include (but not limited to):

  • Perform EKGs throughout the Emergency Department as well as throughout the entire hospital.
  • Set up rooms for patient admission.
  • Clean equipment, patient bedside area and nursing unit.
  • Transport patients by bed, cart or wheelchair.
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and Nursing unit.
  • Perform basic CPR as required.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Assist patients with bedpans, urinals and perineal cleansing.
  • Perform patient personal hygiene such as bathing, toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming and oral care for patients.
  • Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
  • Take temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
  • Enter daily patient record charting in computer.
  • Transport equipment, specimens and supplies.

Percent of Time: 50% - 100% Schedule: 20-40 hours a week dependent on percentage of position:

  • Rotating day/evening/night shifts
  • Combination of 8 & 12-hour shifts, dependent on unit needs
  • Weekend and holiday rotating assignments required
  • Orientation duration may vary

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians for the Medical Surgical Oncology Unit (4JPP) within the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division. Our Medical-Surgical Services Division is one of the largest in the hospital, with more than 260 of our 811 beds assigned to medical-surgical care settings. The Medical Surgical Oncology Unit is a 44-bed adult medical-surgical oncology, urology unit. This unit is part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Holden Comprehensive Cancer center and Silver Beacon Award of Excellence Unit. This unit is ranked 43rd in the nation for cancer care according to US. News and World Report.

Surgical patients receiving post-op care for laparoscopic and complex oncology related surgeries including:

  • Thyroidectomies
  • Gastrectomies
  • Adrenalectomies
  • Splenectomies
  • Liver resections
  • Bowel resections
  • Melanoma excisions
  • Pancreaticoduodenectomies (Whipple procedure)
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  • Carries out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
  • Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
  • Performs special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
  • Assists with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
  • Directly provides for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
  • Turns, positions and ambulates patients.
  • Transports patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
  • Feeds patients, serves drinking water and nourishments, and records patients' intake.
  • Assists patients with bedpans and urinals and records output.
  • Participates in nursing care conferences; reports pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
  • Provides for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
  • Shares responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
  • May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
  • Cleans areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.
Percent of Time: 100% - 40 hours per week

Schedule: Night Shifts with weekend and holiday rotation
