***THIS POSITION REQUIRES AN ENLISTMENT IN THE U.S. ARMY OR ARMY RESERVE***

As an Operating Room Specialist in the U.S. Army or Army Reserve, you will be responsible for assisting the nursing staff in preparing the patient and operating room environment.  You will provide assistance to the medical staff during surgical procedures.  You will also operate the centralized material service and are responsible for preparing and maintaining sterile medical supplies and special equipment for medical treatment facilities. 

Job Duties

  • Provide assistance to the medical staff during surgical procedures to include the creation and maintenance of sterile fields for surgical procedures
  • Assist in preparing patients and operating room environment for surgery
  • Perform various preoperative and postoperative procedures as directed.  This does not include the manipulation of tissue (e.g., cutting, suturing, cannulating, grafting, sawing or drilling)
  • Responsible for the sterilization process, which includes inspecting, cleaning, assembling, warping and sterilizing equipment

Experience

Because the U.S. Army provides training for all of our military occupational specialties, no specific experience in the medical field is necessary.  

Candidates with a current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) may be exempt from some training requirements.

Training

Job training to become an operating room specialist consists of 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 19 weeks of Advanced Individual Training, which includes on-the-job instruction.  Some of the skills youll learn are:

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Basic nursing care
  • Knowledge of the human body
  • Minor surgical procedures
  • Clinical laboratory procedures
  • Methods for diagnosing diseases

Compensation

  • Paid training
  • Monthly salary (based off pay grade and time in service)

  • 30 days of paid vacation each year, in addition to federal holidays for full-time Soldiers

EXPERIENCE May Begin As Entry Level Practitioner With No Experience But Must Successfully Attain Necessary Skills During Orientation And Probationary Period. LICENSURE Current State Of Connecticut License Is A Requirement. SPECIAL SKILLS Cross Trained staff in Cardiology , Pulmonary Lab and or Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Staff choosing to voluntarily cross train into Cardiology and or Pulmonary will be required to precept with trained staff to acquire skills in those areas including but not limited to: Pulmonary Function Testing, Methacholine Challenges, Cardiac Stress Testing, EKG/Holter/Even Monitoring, Pulmonary Rehabilitation. ACLS and Certification in Cardiology is required within a year of completed cross training in Cardiology. . The Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist Certification is required/Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist Certification preferred within 6 months of completed cross training to the Pulmonary Function Lab. Participates in professional development programs to remain current in healthcare practices, trends, and regulations. Educates staff as changes occur. Provides staff in-service as appropriate. * 20. Attends weekly team meetings to discuss team and project related activities, issues, change, communications, and updates. * 21. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit. Qualifications EDUCATION Bachelor?s degree required; master?s degree preferred. Six Sigma, LEAN preferred EXPERIENCE Minimum of 3 years of increasingly responsible managerial experience in a healthcare setting. Knowledge of clinical operations and project management is required. LICENSURE Valid State of Connecticut Radiologic Technologist license, CT or MRI licensure preferred SPECIAL SKILLS Demonstrated skills in successful communication, conflict resolution, delegation, operations, project management, facilities planning, and collaboration across complex healthcare settings.
