Respiratory Support Technician

This position provides direct and indirect patient care and services in the home, office, and hospital environment in accordance with all governmental, accrediting, and organizational policies and procedures. Utilization of all available resources to ensure a customer receives the appropriate goods and services in the most efficient and patient satisfactory manner possible.

Equipment included, but not limited to, are CPAP, BIPAP, Auto-titration set-ups and downloading, phototherapy, CPM, apnea monitor training and downloading, nebulizers (both high and low volume), oxygen and portability, overnight oximetry devices, conserving device tests, suction/trach and enteral.


Job Duties:

  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of current Respiratory Programs and HME products and services offered by the company and all applicable governmental regulations.
  • Effectively convey ideas or written processes and instructions to patients in a polite, informative, and appropriate matter.
  • Identifies need for Pulse Ox testing to recertify or qualify O2 services per insurance regulations.
  • Complete all company, insurance, and/or government-provided paperwork timely and entirely. Included, but not limited to; Delivery tickets, safety checklist forms, patient booklet receipts, ABNs, AMAs, equipment-specific instruction/cleaning forms, etc.
  • Initiate, maintain and perform follow-up calls or visits with patients.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance checks and simple repair as required by company policy or manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Assist with customer equipment problems during business/non-business hours and under emergency situations. Troubleshoot all equipment failures calmly and patiently.
  • Report equipment hazards and/or product incidents as required in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Retain knowledge of and consistently adhere to procedures for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), infection control, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Assume on-call responsibilities during non-business hours in accordance with company policy.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and function within the guidelines of HIPAA.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Position Summary:


The RT Vent Field Clinician is a Respiratory Therapist providing respiratory patient care to Vent patients for optimal outcomes. Provides respiratory care to patients in alternate sites in accordance with AdaptHealth's policies and procedures. Respiratory care will be preventative, rehabilitative, and palliative in nature. The RT will utilize all the resources available within the agency and community to accomplish care objectives. This position will provide education and care to the patient and communicate with team, physicians and referral sources and other patient agencies ensuring prompt attention to patient care issues.


Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes various sources of information to attain greater competence about his or her position, including attending educational events (including attending optional in-services) and asking questions.
  • Utilizes acquired knowledge to increase his or her competencies.
  • Consistently demonstrates ability to adequately complete all documentation and charting procedures in compliance with company policy and procedures.
  • Maintains complete and accurate patient files by updating all documents per company policy and procedures.
  • Reviews Plan of Treatments and Care Plans to assure they are accurate and up to date.
  • Documents procedures including how the patient tolerated a procedure, side effects and other pertinent information.
  • Assists with authorization for Ventilator referrals for patients.
  • Shows adequate knowledge of respiratory equipment and displays ability to utilize knowledge in the clinical setting.
  • Displays knowledge of assessment skills and demonstrates application of clinical skills during set-ups, follow-ups, and in-services.
  • Participates in discharge planning of highly technical cases.
  • Performs clinical assessments as needed and reports results and recommendations to the referral and physician.
  • Participates in highly technical discharges and prepares in advance to assure the patient and caregivers have a smooth transition to the home setting.
  • Performs in-services to hospital staff, referrals, other professionals regarding equipment & issues of clinical nature.
  • Follows up with physician and referrals regarding patient status and documents accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Retain knowledge of and consistently adhere to procedures for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), infection control and hazardous materials handling.
  • Works to promote AdaptHealth by new program development, operational backup, personal visits, coordination of educational activities, etc.
  • Assume on-call responsibilities during non-business hours in accordance with company policy.
  • Uses clinical expertise in evaluating vent patients records once a ventilator set up has been completed by the branch Respiratory Therapist.
  • Ensures accuracy of prescriptions and plan of care was followed and documented. Also reviews delivery tickets, home inspection, ventilator check, and patient equipment competencies are complete and documented.
  • Maintains proficient knowledge of ventilator patients including compliance software, new technology, units, and supplies supported by Adapthealth.
  • Ability to demonstrate and instruct on use of vent units and supplies. Ability to make decisions for patients based on compliance data and assessment.
  • Communicates with team, physicians and referral sources and other patient agencies ensuring prompt attention to patient care issues.
  • Maintains working knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid and other third-party payer guidelines related to ventilation.
  • Electronically documents patient care activity, intervention provided and all communication regarding the patient. Documentation is accurate, complete and follows company standards.
  • Appropriate steps taken to ensure recommendations and orders sent are acknowledged and followed up in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for accuracy, clarity, and timeliness of verbal and written communications as it relates to role.
  • Responsible for documentation that supports data collection to track and trend outcomes.
  • Assists in establishing clinical documentation when needed for third party reimbursement or justification.
  • Uses knowledge in working with referral sources to educate about best practice standards.
  • Works collaboratively and pro-actively with peers and other team members to resolve issues and assure optimum outcomes for patients, referral sources and staff.
  • Acts as a resource on practices and processes to provide appropriate guidance.
  • Develop and maintain working knowledge of current HME products and services offered by the company.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds, stand, bend, stoop, and be able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform one-man CPR.

The unit consists of 76 beds including a 12-bed behavioral unit. Richland can treat all types of patients and provide specialized interventions.

Essential Functions

* All team members are expected to be knowledgeable and compliant with Prisma Health's values: Inspire health. Serve with compassion. Be the difference.


* Collects data and completes nursing assessment utilizing appropriate area and/or age specific standards/policies and tools. Completes appropriate forms. Assesses and recognizes subtle or actual changes in patients' status and patient response to intervention. Identifies nursing priorities for patient plan of care based on nursing assessment and other data as appropriate. Validates these priorities with healthcare team members and documents appropriately.


* Develops an individual plan of care based on the age and assessed needs of the patient. Develops the plan in collaboration with the patient and/or family, the provider, and other members of the interdisciplinary health care team.


* Updates the plan based on changes in the patient's condition and communicates changes in the plan to other members of the team.


* Identifies realistic and measurable goals and outcomes to be attained prior to discharge. Validates these with the patient and/or family.


* Demonstrates respect for the patient's/family cultural, spiritual, and belief system in planning for care.


* Includes planning for discharge to assure continuity of care and a smooth transition post discharge from one level of care to another including appropriate referrals.


* Provides direct care to assigned patients consistent with the established nursing plan.


* Performs specific tasks based on organizational, departmental and/or unit policies and procedures within the RN scope of practice.


* Delegates nursing tasks as appropriate to members of the healthcare team, developing written assignments (if appropriate) and ensures completion of assigned tasks.


* Monitors quality of care delivered on a continual basis; ensures appropriate surveillance of assigned patients.


* Provides care based on patient and unit priorities, coordinating and organizing tasks as appropriate, utilizing resources internal and external to the unit. Incorporates cost containment principles into nursing care. Utilizes appropriate technology in daily practice.


* Assumes responsibility for patient safety by maintaining a safe environment to include awareness of safety procedures, protocols and adherence to patient care standards.


* Utilizes performance indicators to collect data, monitor quality and effectiveness while providing nursing care.


* Completes assigned hospital/unit performance improvement monitoring (audits).


* Based on assessment/reassessment of patient response to interventions, evaluates plan of care for effectiveness, documents progress toward expected outcomes, and revises plan of care as needed. Reports changes in patient condition and refers unresolved problems to appropriate healthcare team members. Discusses outcomes with peers (via shift-to-shift report) and with other healthcare team members.


* Evaluates opportunities for quality improvement; based upon evaluation, incorporates performance improvement recommendations into the plan of care as appropriate.


* Identifies/assesses patient/family learning needs and teaches accordingly by using language and terminology that the patient/family is familiar with providing examples to clarify ideas, implementing and evaluating teaching plan (encourages patient/family involvement/participation), Computer resources and Micromedex utilization


* Communicates the patient/family's need for education/teaching to others in the healthcare continuum.


* Evaluates own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standard guidelines, state statutes, policies, procedures, rules/regulations and current specific knowledge. Takes personal accountability for maintaining competency through education and professional activities. Maintains professional licensure and completes required mandatory education in a timely manner. Reflects on identified areas of strength that offer opportunity for improvement.


* Ensures that written documentation and oral communication focuses on pertinent information to support meeting patient/family care needs.


* Serves as the patient's advocate and coordinator of care, working collaboratively with providers and other members of the healthcare team.


* Performs other duties as assigned.



Supervisory/Management Responsibility

* This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.



Minimum Requirements

* Education - Associate degree in Nursing. Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.


* Experience - One (1) year experience as a registered nurse.



In Lieu Of

* In lieu of one (1) year of registered nurse experience, will accept successful completion of the Prisma Health Nurse Residency Program or successful completion of a comparable residency from another organization.


* In lieu of one (1) year of registered nurse experience, will accept 1 year of licensed practical nurse (LPN) experience for internal candidates within the same service line.


* In lieu of Associate degree in nursing, will accept nursing diploma with licensure to practice as a registered nurse.

Responsible for attending all quality and core curriculum classes, actively participating in professional development workshops and peer support groups, and successfully completing all clinical competencies and validation requirements of the Nurse Residency Program. Works under the direct and indirect supervision of the Clinical Education Team while refining nursing knowledge and skills. The Medical Intensive Care Unit is a 18-bed, recently renovated, unit that encounters patients in the adult/geriatric population that are acutely ill as a result of a variety of medical illnesses, often with multiple comorbidities. These include, but are not limited to, septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome, CVA, post cardiac arrest, GI bleeding, overdoses, and more.

Provides clinical direction for all aspects of patient care in an acute inpatient setting, fostering patient/family centered care.
