Qualifications

Internship Description

The Recovery Support Specialist Intern reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Recovery Support Specialist Intern uses personal and training experience to create a safe space for consumers to calmly process crisis events, learn and apply wellness strategies, and prevent future crisis events. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the recovery support specialist intern operates from the Crisis Now concept and focuses on practices including recovery orientation, trauma-informed care, and a philosophy that crises are an opportunity for learning. The recovery support specialist intern understands that peer support is voluntary, and comes from a place of non-judgment and empathy when providing services to living room guests. All services are offered within an inviting, home-like, atmosphere and are designed to proactively divert crises and break the cycle of psychiatric hospitalizations.

Responsibilities:
  • Recognize that recovery support is voluntary for the guest .
  • Acts within ethical standards and demonstrates healthy boundaries .
  • Utilize personal recovery experiences to provide peer support for guests.
  • Serves as a role model for persons in recovery by modeling effective coping techniques, self-help strategies and self-care.
  • Assists guests with identifying strengths, recovery and wellness goals and barriers, as well as with determining recovery and wellness interventions based on guests own life goals.
  • Inform guests about community and natural supports and how to utilize such in the recovery process.
  • Provide on-site Living Room support and introduction to services at NM KCH and VW to patients within the hospital setting (e.g. Emergency Department, Medical Floors, etc.).
  • Build relationships with local police, fire, emergency departments, and other organizations to promote awareness of Living Room services.
  • Advocate within systems to promote person centered recovery support services. Work with an interdisciplinary team in reviewing cases and developing individual plans.
  • Assist guest with individual service plans through rehabilitation services such as case management, advocacy, outreach, skills training groups (e.g. WRAP), social rehabilitation, and community support as indicated.
  • Facilitate recovery-oriented groups (e.g. WRAP, NAMI Peer-to-peer, WHAM)
  • Serve as an individual advocate for guests in the community and when consulting with other center staff regarding assessment and treatment/intervention planning.
  • Provide recovery information and activities to all guests; information, resources and connection to natural supports; and must follow principles of trauma informed care.
  • Provide support for guest's needs, strengths, goals, and resources.
  • Transport guests to and from home to appointments
  • Provide support in treatment planning and discharge planning.
  • Utilize QMHP/LPHA when guest presents with acute crisis for appropriate triage/screening and treatment as indicated.
  • Consult with other service agencies around case-specific and programmatic issues.
  • Link guests to other human service programs as indicated.
  • Serve as a liaison to other community agencies as needed.
  • Train other providers and non-providers in areas related to service specialties.
  • Document service provision as required by NM Ben Gordon Center.
  • Maintain clinical and management records in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Maintain 100% UM/UR compliance
  • Maintain 100% documentation submission within 24 hours.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Immediately report suspicions of abuse or neglect.

Qualifications

Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Recovery Support Specialists should be able to articulate their personal experience in recovery when working with patients who are experiencing mental health and/or drug/alcohol issues as it relates to providing peer support services to these patient populations.
Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in behavioral health related field
  • One year experience working with individuals suffering from severe mental illness and/or drug and alcohol issues.
  • Experience with Medicaid Rule 132/140
  • Knowledge and understanding of SUPR 2060

Required:

  • Two or more years of recent experience working as a Medical Assistant in a physician office setting or completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 2 or more years of experience as Medical Assistant or completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program
  • American Heart Association accredited Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
  • Completion of phlebotomy class or equivalent experience. Basic computer knowledge. Ability to type proficiently and accurately. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Ability to assess and determine situations requiring an interpreter and to use interpreter services effectively.
  • New graduates/hires must obtain certification/registration within 1 year from hire date. The following certifications will be accepted:
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists (AMT) or
    • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
    • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
    • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) through the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
    • An active RN or LPN license in the state of Illinois will be accepted in lieu of CMA certification

Preferred:

  • Associates degree in Medical Assisting
  • Second language proficiency a plus

The Medical Scribe reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Is present during clinical services and accurately documents information, conversations and activity into the EHR in real time, under the direct supervision of the Provider.

Identifies/Introduces self and role of Scribe to patient and/or family.

Accompanies provider during patient interviews and examinations.

Records pertinent positive and negative findings in patient history and physical examination including history of present illness, past medical/surgical history, social history, review of systems, medications, allergies and family history.

Records procedures, Provider review of lab tests, Provider review and impression of diagnostic images and/or review of official radiologist interpretations.

May record time of patient care activities including Provider-to-Provider communication, family communication and re-examination of the patient.

Assists with preparation of paperwork for disposition of patients from clinic setting.

Helps increase Provider productivity and workflow by performing a variety of non-clinical tasks including: Assisting the Provider(s) in navigating the EHR. Researching information requested by the Provider. May locate information for review (i.e., previous notes, reports, test results, and laboratory results).

Complies with all NMHC policies, including those relating to confidentiality of patient information, and all local, State and Federal guidelines for documentation, confidentiality and privacy (HIPAA).

Ensures documentation in the EMR includes a statement that "Document has been prepared at the direction and in conjunction with Provider" along with the along with the Scribe's name and title, and that the Provider has included an attestation regarding the accuracy of the note.

Generates and prints patient plan with scribe name on bottom.

Scribes are prohibited from participating in any clinical care (must refer all requests related to patient care to the responsible Physician or Nursing staff), interjecting own feelings, observations or impressions into the documentation, dictating reports, entering/writing prescriptions, using Provider's log-in or passwords, or performing hospital duties.

All other duties as assigned.

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Proficient in medical terminology and basic coding knowledge.

Strong written and verbal communication skills; Ability to communicate and interact professionally with others.

Strong attention to detail.

Ability to actively listen and observe.

Keyboard proficiency and the ability to operate a personal computer and related software applications.

Ability to multi-task and work in a dynamic, highly-stressful environment that routinely involves exposure to highly-sensitive personal medical issues.

Ability to problem solve under pressure.

Understanding of and commitment to appropriate protection of confidential patient information.

2 years of experience working as a Medical Scribe.

Medical Scribe certification through a vocational school, community college or university.

Bachelor's degree

A Brief Overview:
Reviews the clinical needs of customers seeking behavioral health services and provides treatment referrals which are consistent with the customer's medical and psychiatric status/symptoms. Is in constant review of where patients are in the system who need inpatient behavioral health beds or services and works to place them in clinically appropriate in system beds. This role works to connect the behavioral health service line across the NS-EEH health system.


What you will do:

  • Reviews comprehensive clinical assessments for patients seeking treatment within the NS-EEH Behavioral Health Service line.
  • Appropriately identifies clinical needs. Obtains initial diagnostic impression and confirmation during the disposition process with the physician or designee.
  • Reviews vital signs, weight, blood alcohol and calibration of BMI for specific population.
  • Reviews documentation of assessment and level of care determined.
  • Reviews collateral with families and support
  • Provides treatment referrals which are consistent with the customer's medical and psychiatric status and symptoms.
  • Formulates clinical picture of the patient to collaborate with the Clinical Team on admissions and appropriate placement.
  • Ensures smooth patient admissions and movement by collaborating with BH Leadership.
  • Collaborates and creates working relationships with NS-EEH acute care ED and medical floor staff to ensure smooth workflows and patient movement between the hospitals

What you will need:

  • Master's Degree in a health-related field or a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Current State of Illinois licensure LSW, LCSW, LPC, LCPC, RN
  • Minimum of three years of acute care behavioral health experience.
