- Follow HIPAA and Joint Commission guidelines in accordance with organizational and departmental policies.
- Perform clerical assignments in Food & Nutrition office including faxing, answering phones, filing, photocopying, etc. Maintains organization and efficiency of department office. Follows up with inquiries and requests in a timely and appropriate manner.

Job Summary and Qualifications
The Inpatient Coding Denials Specialist is a high-level coding expert responsible for investigating and resolving coding related denials from payers, preventing lost reimbursement and promoting denial prevention. The Inpatient Coding Denials Specialist will adhere to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. The Inpatient Coding Denials Specialist must ensure timely, accurate, and thorough appeals for all accounts assigned and apply critical thinking skills to ascertain root cause of denials.
What you will do in this role:
* Analyzes documentation to support codes/DRGs and abstracted data (e.g., discharge disposition) for inpatient records for multiple facilities using ICD-10- CM and ICD-10-PCS to include:
Principal diagnosis code assignment
Secondary diagnosis code assignment
Procedure code assignment
Discharge disposition
* Identifies and writes clear and concise appeal letters utilizing all available documentation, regulations and guidelines to defend the billed claim
* Utilize the following resources to identify the root cause of the denial/downgrade
* Explanation of Benefits/Remittance Advice
* Payer denial/DRG downgrade letters
* Complex NCD/LCD guidelines, CMS/AHCA policies and regulations
* Federal Register, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, Food and Drug Administration, Medicare Administrative Contractors and payer websites
* Escalates problem accounts/processes/trends and report opportunities to supervisor for denial prevention and coding education opportunities
* Maintains or exceeds established productivity standards
* Maintains or exceeds established accuracy standards
* As needed, may periodically be asked to perform Coding Integrity Specialist III (CIS-III) or Coding Account Resolution Specialist III (CARS-III) duties
* Reviews all official data quality standards, coding guidelines, Company policies and procedures, and clinical/medical resources to assure coding knowledge and skills remain current
* Follows all applicable coding guidance in assigning, sequencing, validation, and/or editing of codes/DRGs
* Meets all educational requirements as stated in current Company and HSC policy

Budget/Financial: Attempts to collect the estimated self-pay balance of all inpatient, outpatient and ER accounts, at the earliest possible collection control point. Monitors in-house accounts and attempts to make financial arrangements with guarantors for payment of their self-pay balances in full, prior to discharge, or within ten working days thereafter. Completes financial evaluation forms to document guarantors' income, expenses, assets and liabilities. Identifies those patients without adequate insurance coverage. Makes personal contact with patient or guarantor to determine guarantor's ability to pay non-covered charges, as well as to determine potential eligibility for financial assistance programs (namely Medicaid). Maintains a list of health care financial assistance programs and the eligibility requirements for each program. Refers patients/guarantors to sources of outside funding assistance, as needed. Works efficiently and accurately within designated time frames to ensure a continuity of information and cash flow. Contacts scheduled patients at home to obtain pre-admission information, explain financial policies, estimate self-pay balances, and obtain a promise to pay on or before admission/registration. Interviews all inpatients and select (self-pay) outpatients at time of registration, or at least within 24 hours of admission, to verify complete insurance and financial information, explain financial policies, and collect the estimated self-pay balance. Documents concise and understandable notes regarding all self-pay account collection activity, as well as each patient or guarantor interaction. Documents all efforts to collect patient account balances, other self-pay collection activities and referrals to Medicaid. Coordinates financial counseling activities with Admitting, Outpatient Registration, Emergency Registration, Utilization Review, Nursing, Social Services, and Patient Financial Services. Verifies insurance coverage and benefits. Exceeds monthly quota on a consistent basis. Formally reports results of self-pay collection activity to direct supervisor, on a daily basis or according to policy. Provides feedback to PAS management concerning self-pay collection and data integrity issues. Responsible for completion of appropriate error/issues in Work Queues. Identifies and resolves Payor Denials as indicated.
General: Observes work hours and provides proper notice of absences, tardies work schedule changes. Attends select departmental meetings at the request of WHS Management. Completes monthly, quarterly, and annual mandatory training as required. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
