Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) (5 RCP)
This 26-bed unit provides comprehensive high-tech intensive care to acutely ill adults with a wide variety of complex critically ill patients with multiple medical issues who demonstrate a deterioration of health requiring critical care nursing. Patient diagnoses include multi-system failure respiratory failure, severe sepsis, overdoses (OD), GIB, medical neuro, various cancers, and bone marrow transplants. State of the art technology is implemented in MICU including il-2 therapy, VV ECMO, CRRT, ventilators, vasoactive drugs and preforms many bedside procedures. MICU provides total patient care involving a multidisciplinary approach, in conjunction with state-of-the-art technology, for systematic assessment and improvement of care to the critically ill patients. In 2012 we were awarded a National award for outstanding achievement and leadership for elimination of Ventilator Associated pneumonia.
Characteristic Duties of our Staff Nurses include but are not limited to:
* Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness
* Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations
* Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings
* Develops patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes
* Implements patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses. Documents/reports interventions and patient/family response
* Collaborates and integrates contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan
* Develops, coordinates and implements transfer/discharge planning throughout episode of care
* Implements nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Follows universal precautions

Our Medical-Surgical Services Division is one of the largest in the hospital, with more than 260 of our 811 beds assigned to medical-surgical care settings. The Medical Surgical Oncology Unit is a 44-bed adult medical-surgical oncology, urology unit. This unit is part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Holden Comprehensive Cancer center and Silver Beacon Award of Excellence Unit. This unit is ranked 43rd in the nation for cancer care according to US. News and World Report.
Surgical patients receiving post-op care for laparoscopic and complex oncology related surgeries including:
- Thyroidectomies
- Gastrectomies
- Adrenalectomies
- Splenectomies
- Liver resections
- Bowel resections
- Melanoma excisions
- Pancreaticoduodenectomies (Whipple procedure)
- Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
- Carries out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
- Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.

Summary

ResponsibilitiesPatient Care
- Partners with the RN and other healthcare team members to achieve patient care outcomes and goals of care, as identified in the plan of care.
- Obtains records and/or accurately enters data into the EMR, as identified in the PCT Scope of Practice. Competency validation and documentation of skill performance is required.
- Performs specific tasks as directed by the RN and other healthcare team members, following competency validation.
- May assist with responsibilities of the Unit Secretary, per department expectations and appropriate competency validation.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living.
- May assist in transporting medications that are not controlled substances from pharmacy delivery devices to medication storage areas on patient care unit, as well as transporting medications from patient care unit to pharmacy.
- Demonstrates an awareness of patient and personal safety.
- Incorporates St. Luke’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model in their daily care.
Effective Communication
- Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, healthcare team members and other customers. Verbal communication is clear and precise. Written communication is legible, if handwritten, and done in a timely manner using approved abbreviations.
- Verbally presents factual, concise, and timely information and/or patient care data to the RN, the healthcare team, patients and/or family members in a professional manner.
- Real-time EMR documentation is done in accordance with hospital and unit policies.
- Hand-offs will be done with attention to detail and with safety as a high priority. Hand-offs are utilized to communicate patient treatment and assessment information, patient education needs, goals of care and other quality care measures at each change of caregiver or setting of care.

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking to hire 50-100% Patient Care Technicians in the Emergency Department (ED). Under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses, the ED Patient Care Technician will perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care.
Duties include (but not limited to):
- Perform EKGs throughout the Emergency Department as well as throughout the entire hospital.
- Set up rooms for patient admission.
- Clean equipment, patient bedside area and nursing unit.
- Transport patients by bed, cart or wheelchair.
- Stock and supply patient rooms and Nursing unit.
- Perform basic CPR as required.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Assist patients with bedpans, urinals and perineal cleansing.
- Perform patient personal hygiene such as bathing, toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming and oral care for patients.
- Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
- Take temperature, pulse and blood pressure.

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians for the Medical Surgical Oncology Unit (4JPP) within the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division. Our Medical-Surgical Services Division is one of the largest in the hospital, with more than 260 of our 811 beds assigned to medical-surgical care settings. The Medical Surgical Oncology Unit is a 44-bed adult medical-surgical oncology, urology unit. This unit is part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Holden Comprehensive Cancer center and Silver Beacon Award of Excellence Unit. This unit is ranked 43rd in the nation for cancer care according to US. News and World Report.
Surgical patients receiving post-op care for laparoscopic and complex oncology related surgeries including:
- Thyroidectomies
- Gastrectomies
- Adrenalectomies
- Splenectomies
- Liver resections
- Bowel resections
- Melanoma excisions
- Pancreaticoduodenectomies (Whipple procedure)
- Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
- Carries out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
- Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
- Performs special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
- Assists with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
- Directly provides for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
- Turns, positions and ambulates patients.
- Transports patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
- Feeds patients, serves drinking water and nourishments, and records patients' intake.
- Assists patients with bedpans and urinals and records output.
- Participates in nursing care conferences; reports pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
- Provides for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
- Shares responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
- May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
- Cleans areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment
