Job Summary:
- Assists residents with bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, and ADL’s as needed during shift. li>Changes linen on beds with bath schedule and/or PRN.
- Takes and records vital signs per policy and/or as directed.
- Assist CNA’s with needed tasks. < i>Turns residents while in bed per Facility policy.
- Repositions residents while out of bed per Facility policy.
- Assists with oral hygiene including denture care when getting up in the morning, after meals, at bedtime, and/or when needed.
- Answers call bells promptly following Facility policy.
- Completes patient care records at end of shift, including accurate I and O.
- At the end of month, fill in Patient Observation Records and Activity Attendance Records for the next month.
- Collects urine or stool specimens as directed.
- Gives enemas as directed.
- Keeps patient unit/halls clean and neat.
- Keeps bedside tables, chest of drawers, and closets clean, neat and organized. (Including clothing)
- Cares for and cleans nursing equipment. (BP equipment, thermometers, etc.)
- Follows restraint policy, including release.
- Assists with post-mortem care when needed.
- Assures residents have fresh ice water by refilling pitchers with ice and/or water at least once every shift.
- Cleans water pitchers, cups, bedpans, urinals per schedules.
- Rinses personal clothing, sheets, etc. if soiled before placing in appropriate laundry barrel.
- Assists residents with bedpan or urinal.
- Empties catheter bags at end of shift and records output on appropriate record.
- Assists with rehabilitation programs such as bowel and bladder retraining, grooming, etc. and always charting on Rehabilitation sheet every shift.
- Assists charge nurse with resident needs and treatments as directed.
- Keeps a clean towel and a clean washcloth for each patient in bathrooms as all times. (Replaces immediately when used.).
- Empties incontinent pad barrel and linen containers every shift and replaces plastic bags in containers.
- Reports at end of shift to oncoming CNA’s. < i>Understands and agree to follow policy of no transfers until Certified. Agrees to obtain assistance from a CNA assigned to assist the Care assistant with tasks they are not comfortable or trained to perform and with ALL transfers.
Job Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be a graduate of a NA1 training program. Must have passed the program and must pass state test within 4 months from completion.
- Must be willing to care for geriatric patients and have a genuine concern for their welfare.
- Must be willing to receive, understand, and follow orders.
- Must be willing to work and cooperate well with other nursing staff, other departments, and families and visitors.
- Must be kind and respectful to patients, staff, and visitors.
- Must be able to use equipment without jeopardizing the safety of self, others, or equipment and use supplies safely and economically.
- Wears approved colored dress uniform, or approved colored top and natural colored hose, white nonporous (leather) shoes and nametag.
- Demonstrates neat appearance and good personal hygiene.
- Must read, know, and follow personnel, department, and Facility policies and procedures.

POSITION PURPOSE:
The Medical Assistance Apprentice Initiative program will prepare individuals to become Certified Medical Assistants. Apprentices are expected to work full-time in the clinic and log 2000 hours of on-the-job (OTJ) training over 12 months. All clinical skills will be taught hands-on through 1:1 coaching. Apprentices are also required to complete 200 hours of online didactic training that may include a combination of online instruction, educational readings, videos, quizzes, projects, and more. The online component is typically completed in the evenings and/or on weekends.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Greet patients and escort them to exam rooms; inform patients of time delays throughout visits.
* Prepare patients for providers and anticipate the needs of providers to maintain efficient patient flow.
* Perform vital signs and other patient procedures, exams, patient education, etc.
* Accurately document all aspects of patient encounters.
* Perform phlebotomy and laboratory procedures as directed by the provider.
* Perform and document injections and immunizations.
* Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for patients.
* Clean, prepare, and sterilize instruments.
* Obtain prescription refills under the direction and authorization of the provider.
* Manage internal and external referrals and required documentation.
* Observe and follow required safety protocols, including handling and disposal of sharps, use of personal protective equipment, exposure to blood-borne pathogens, and general safety of employees and patients.
* Answer telephones, schedule patients, and support care team members.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required. Enrollment with a participating Federally Qualified Health Center in the Medical Assistance Apprenticeship Initiative sponsored by the North Carolina Community Health Center Association.
Current CPR/BLS certification is required but can be administered by OIC.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Maintain confidentiality; Good computer skills; Well-organized with good oral and written communication skills.
COMPENSATION
* First 500 hours of clinical training at $14.00/hour (i.e., a maximum of $,000 for the first 500 hours of clinical training)
* Second 500 hours of clinical training at 14.75/hour (i.e., a maximum of 7,375 for the second 500 hours of clinical training)
* Final 1,000 hours of clinical training at 15.25/hour (i.e., a maximum of 15,250 for the final 1,000 hours of clinical training)
