Clinical Nurse II needed for UNC Health Youth Behavioral Health (YBH), in Butner, North Carolina.

We are seeking a Clinical Nurse II, preferably with strong clinical experience in adolescent mental health to work with a multidisciplinary team. The Clinical Nurse II will primarily be working on Cardinal/1YBH a 14-bed inpatient unit dedicated to providing comprehensive psychiatric care for adolescents aged 12 to 15 who require acute psychiatric stabilization. Our unit is designed to address the urgent needs of these young individuals, focusing on stabilizing their current crises and setting a foundation for long-term mental health.

Youth Behavioral Health Hospital (YBH) is a 54-bed, 24-hour, locked psychiatric facility located in Butner, North Carolina. YBH philosophy is grounded in a milieu-based, trauma-informed and therapeutic setting. This facility aims to serve patients with a complex history, including aggression and psychosis. Safety is a key component of the care provided as well as introduction of positive coping skills, healthy living and positive leisure activities. Therapy services will work among a large interdisciplinary team including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Nursing Services. There will be four units dedicated to serving children and adolescent with mental health diagnoses, dual diagnoses, substance misuse and complex behaviors, including those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Summary:

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Clinical Nurse II needed for UNC Health Youth Behavioral Health (YBH), in Butner, North Carolina.

We are seeking a Clinical Nurse II, preferably with strong clinical experience in adolescent mental health to work with a multidisciplinary team. The Clinical Nurse II will primarily be working on Cardinal/1YBH a 14-bed inpatient unit dedicated to providing comprehensive psychiatric care for adolescents aged 12 to 15 who require acute psychiatric stabilization. Our unit is designed to address the urgent needs of these young individuals, focusing on stabilizing their current crises and setting a foundation for long-term mental health.

Youth Behavioral Health Hospital (YBH) is a 54-bed, 24-hour, locked psychiatric facility located in Butner, North Carolina. YBH philosophy is grounded in a milieu-based, trauma-informed and therapeutic setting. This facility aims to serve patients with a complex history, including aggression and psychosis. Safety is a key component of the care provided as well as introduction of positive coping skills, healthy living and positive leisure activities. Therapy services will work among a large interdisciplinary team including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Nursing Services. There will be four units dedicated to serving children and adolescent with mental health diagnoses, dual diagnoses, substance misuse and complex behaviors, including those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and with Autism Spectrum Disorder. _The staff are to be cross trained on all of these units as one team._

Summary:

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities:

1. Education - Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self. Attends education programs based on identified learning needs. With assistance, uses patient education materials relevant to patient population. Assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers. Assesses developmental level of patient and factors affecting ability to learn.

We are currently recruiting for multiple Registered Nurses on all units at Central Regional Hospital (CRH).

The registered nurse position manages the delivery of nursing care through the on-going supervision, teaching, and evaluation of nursing personnel (as specified in the legal definition of the practice of nursing) (NCBON-NCAC 6.0224i). The Professional Nurse provides psychiatric-mental health and medical nursing care (utilizing the Nursing Process) and direct supervision of other licensed and non-licensed staff on the patient care unit (during their assigned shift). Supervision includes rotating in the charge nurse role and appropriately assessing the capabilities of staff and delegating task and responsibilities. The Professional Nurse provides direct observation of patients and evaluation of nursing care given. The role functions under the direct report of a Nurse Supervisor II (Clinical Nurse Manager). 

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Responsible for completion of shift assignments, medication administration, participation on treatment teams and all other required duties within the scope of the role and license.
* Rotating responsibility as the unit's Charge Nurse. The Registered Nurse, performing in the Charge Nurse role will supervise the tasks and duties of other Professional Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Healthcare Technicians/Youth Program Assistants (Certified Nursing Assistant). 

Adult Admissions Unit (AAU). AAU serves patients ages 18-64 presenting with multiple diagnoses including primary psychiatric as well as substance abuse and medical diagnoses. The goal of AAU is stabilization so patients can return to living in the community as independently as possible.

 

Child & Adolescent Unit (CAU). CAU evaluates and treats children ages 5 to 17 using the philosophy that children do well if they can. All programs within the Child/Adolescent Services provide comprehensive medical, psychiatric, psychological, social and educational services. Special attention is paid to evaluation and planning with the child's family or guardian and other community resources.

 Our CAU has two divisions: Children's Services: Children's Services provide intensive inpatient treatment and emergency diagnostic and treatment services for children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old. It includes a comprehensive educational program. Patients are admitted from the entire State. Adolescent Services: The Adolescent Services provide intensive evaluation and treatment for adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 years old on an emergency and short-term basis. It includes a comprehensive education program and serves the Central Region of the State.

Community Transition Unit (CTU). The Community Transition Unit (CTU) patient population consists of adults ages 18-64, diagnosed with a severe mental illness. Patients are not normally admitted directly into CTU. Patients are transferred from Adult Admission Unit for long term treatment of their mental illness after repeated admissions. Many are homeless and have no source of income and housing; lacking a support system at home and in the community; and have inadequate coping and problem-solving skills.

 

Forensic Services Unit (FSU). Males and females, 18 years and over: Provides mental health treatment and other services for individuals who are involuntary committed for psychiatric hospitalization after being found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity or found incapable to proceed.  Pretrial unit provides comprehensive forensic mental health evaluations for the State of North Carolina for criminal defendants ordered by the court system.

 

Geriatric Services Unit (GSU).  GSU serves patients 65 and older with primary psychiatric diagnoses which may include Alzheimer's/Dementia who exhibit behaviors such as agitation, aggression, and confusion in addition to medical diagnoses.   

Medical Psychiatric Unit (MPU).  The primary purpose of this area is to provide Medical Surgical care for acute illnesses, chronic conditions unable to be treated by the psych unit, and functions as the Emergency Response Team (CODE Blue). Patients admitted to this area often have multiple issues which require various levels of care from independence to total care.  In addition, MPU acts as the Employee Clinic after hours and patient clinic for patients returning from OSH/ambulatory care procedures. 

Multiple positions and shifts are available.

Shifts Available:

 

12-hour (36hr/48hr weekly rotation)

 

* 7:00a-7:30p (10% weekend differential)
* 7:00p-7:30a (20% shift differential + 10% weekend differential)

 

8-hour (40hrs per week)

 

* 7:00a-3:30p (10% weekend differential)
* 3:00p-11:30p (20% shift differential + 10% weekend differential)
* 11:00p-7:30a (20% shift differential + 10% weekend differential)

This position is designated as Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events. Our shifts include alternating weekends and holidays as scheduled. These are full-time positions and are eligible for the State benefits package including Health insurance and retirement.

7/1/2025 Update:  PENDING 2025-2026 Budget Approval:  A Sign-on bonus of $10,000 for wo k units AAU, CTU, FSU, and MPU or a $ 2,000 sign-on bonus for work units CAU and GSU may be offered to the successful applicant(s) of this posting.  

Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).

An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

(1) the employee has held a position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date);

(2) the employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency;

(3) or DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.

This Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. Additional information regarding the Sign-on Policy can be found here.
