Manufacturing Engineer II provides engineering support to all manufacturing and assembly processes at L.B. Foster’s Niles, Ohio facility, where various railway friction management equipment, insulated rail joints and third rail products are produced. Manufacturing Engineer II also participates in product development and improvement activities at the facility, and fulfills various tasks related to customer order processing.
Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Support and evaluate existing manufacturing processes and workflows to identify areas that could benefit from changes and improvements.
- Design, develop, and implement manufacturing processes, equipment, and tooling upgrades.
- Specify, develop, and implement quality control processes, equipment, and tooling. Troubleshoot technical issues with products, reacting quickly to analyze the available data and determine the root cause of the problem.
- Collaborate with other members of the engineering team to develop solutions to problems and to implement product and process improvements.
- Participate in all stages of new product development including designing, prototyping, and testing.
- Lead efforts in building prototypes and running tests to support various investigations (engineering project support, product non-conformance investigations or similar) in the plant.
- Provide recommendations to improve manufacturing efficiency and execute efficiency improvement initiatives.
- Assist in order processing and review activities.
- Function as the primary interface between Engineering and Operations.
- Develop work instructions, manuals, and other technical documentation.
- All other duties as assigned.
Experience, Education, & License Requirement:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required.
- 2 - 4 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing environment required.
- Experience in manufacturing processes including but not limited to CNC, sheet metal fabrication, welding (various types), and electro-mechanical system assembly is desired.
Skills & Abilities:
- Proficiency with 2D AutoCAD and 3D CAD modelling (SolidWorks and OnShape preferred).
- Experience with CE, RoHS, UL, CSA, ISO standards and certification processes is desired.
- Experience with electro-mechanical systems, including automation, control systems (PLC) and instrumentation is desired.
- Experience with SAP ERP system is preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills combined with sound engineering judgment.
- Strong hands-on aptitude in building mechanical or electromechanical assemblies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Works independently and in collaborative team environment.
- Ability to travel infrequently to field test, manufacturer’s, and supplier’s sites.
- Ability to travel infrequently to other plants or company locations as required.

What will I do in this role?
The Production Operator - Manufacturing (Furnace) plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and smooth operation of the Melting Furnace and heavy mobile equipment. This dynamic position encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including preheating, charging, skimming, sampling, maintaining temperature control, alloying, and transferring molten metal to the holding furnace. The role requires a strong commitment to safety, technical expertise, and attention to detail in all aspects of the job.
Key responsibilities include:
- Adhering to strict safety protocols for charging practices, always ensuring both personal and equipment safety at all times
- Operating heavy mobile equipment with proficiency and care, including front-end loaders, combi lifts, and other machinery
- Maintaining the furnace and scrap storage areas , ensuring they remain organized, clean, and well-maintained. This also includes conducting routine upkeep and performing basic maintenance on essential equipment such as the charge car, skim car, and forklift
- Monitoring and controlling the melting furnace and its associated systems to ensure optimal performance and production quality
- Managing the preheater operation with precision to support the overall melting process
- Recording and managing production data accurately and consistently, ensuring the timely documentation of essential metrics for tracking and reporting purposes
- High school diploma or GED - A solid foundation in education is essential to thrive in this role.

- Physical fitness and background clearance - Must be able to pass a physical test and background screening to ensure the ability to meet the demands of the job in a safe and effective manner.
