Overview: We are looking for a Manufacturing Engineer at our Manitowoc, WI location. Our Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for leading the effort to reduce cost, improve quality, review and create efficient production processes, implement Lean methodologies, as well as providing shop support by overseeing processes, troubleshooting, and developing tools and assembly fixtures in a manufacturing environment.

This position will also involve assisting with managing ECRs/ECOs from manufacturing to engineering, creating and maintaining preventative maintenance processes and schedules, creating efficient production documentation, assisting in creation and support of assembly and test fixtures during regular production and prototyping of new products, new tooling research and acquisitions, and improving and maintaining ERP system information.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily production support
  • Politely collaborate with production personnel seeking methods to improve safety, quality, and efficiency
  • Assist with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) during product development stages
  • Design systems and capture data by tracking trends through performance metrics
  • Determine and implement cost reductions by improving process efficiencies
  • Perform and analyze root causes of failures, and create corrective action plans
  • Create, maintain, and audit preventative maintenance schedules for manufacturing equipment
  • Assist Maintenance to troubleshoot manufacturing equipment failures (tools, machines, and fixtures)
  • Design in 3D SolidWorks; machine, assembly, weld and test fixtures for fabricated and machined components
  • Assist with incoming change requests from engineering and manufacturing
  • Assist manufacturing with prototypes
  • Create and define documented process flows
  • Validate labor estimates by performing time studies on manufacturing builds
  • Implement Lean manufacturing and systems throughout the organization
  • Assist in maintaining, programming and implementing automation
  • Other duties, as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Industrial, Manufacturing, Quality, Mechanical, or Related field.
  • 10 years minimum previous experience in a manufacturing engineering role.
  • Design experience of assembly fixtures and other manufacturing aides using 3D CAD.
  • Thorough understanding of Lean Manufacturing, Theory of Constraints and Six Sigma.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience with mechanical design principles.
  • Ability to develop, read, and comprehend mechanical drawings.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 standards and compliance requirements, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in SolidWorks, preferred but not required.
  • Good oral and written skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Self-directed and able to prioritize responsibilities to meet deadlines.
  • Strong desire to work within a team environment.

JOB PURPOSE or JOB SUMMARY:

The primary role of the New Product Launch (NPL) Manufacturing Engineer is to systematically take a project through the NPL process by way of designing the process(es) to meet or exceed customer communicated specifications while meeting internal requirements of the project tied to Safety, Quality, and Delivery.

The NPL Manufacturing Engineer will design and verify the process by working closely with Account Managers and be heavily involved with training plant personnel to be able to complete the product in accordance to customer specifications with assistance from Subject Matter Experts. The NPL Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for assisting the documentation team in creating and verifying all necessary documents tied to said project.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Typical duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Gain a solid understanding of customer requirements verifying product manufacturability. Be able to articulate any and all concerns to key stakeholders within the organization and in some cases directly to the customer.
  • Design manufacturing process of new product in the safest, most efficient, and repeatable way possible with both internal and external customers in mind.
  • Will perform hands-on work based on process design to produce sample parts in accordance to known customer specifications.
  • Train production employees to designed and approved process.
  • Assist the documentation team in creating all new documents required which are relevant to each new project.
  • Confirm or identify discrepancies in BOM’s.
  • Verify process against key corporate metrics via formal audit process.
  • Will be involved in Continuous Improvement initiatives related to any and all manufacturing processes at RLP.
  • Procurement of necessary items and supporting tools to make product manufacturable in accordance to customer supplied criteria. This will include soliciting services from external vendors and suppliers.
  • Provide administrative assistance to Account Manager(s) / Stage Gate program tied to New Project Launch Process.
  • Will be involved in communication with customers related to status of new and at times existing projects.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong and well-developed communication skills are required, both written and verbal.
  • Must have strong work ethic.
  • Critical thinking skills and a common sense based approach to troubleshooting.
  • General competencies within CAD software, preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering documents and drawings.
  • General understanding of BOM structure, routings, and general manufacturing processes.
  • Able to work independently, must be a self-starter and driven to meet deadlines.
  • High attention to detail coupled with strong organizational skills
  • Basic understanding of ISO 9001 preferred.
  • Competent and very willing to perform hands-on work.

PREFERRED AND REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years in Manufacturing environment preferred.

Experience and/or Training: Prior experience in a similar role is desired, knowledge of ISO 9001 standards is preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills is required.

Licenses/Certificates: No requirements

Technology/Computer Equipment: Demonstrated knowledge in the use of current technology, high level of comfort in standard MS products required, General knowledge in CAD software preferred.

Communication: The ability to read, speak, and comprehend English is required.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • This position spends roughly 60% of their time on the manufacturing floor and 40% of their time in an office setting.
  • It is necessary to occasionally climb stairs
  • 40 lbs. occasional lifting is required.
  • General understanding and comfort level with the use of hand and power tools to perform necessary operations is required.
  • Manual dexterity is required to perform normal day to day functions.
  • Ability to wear appropriate PPE in appropriate areas.
  • The ability to work off-shift hours as necessary is required but relatively infrequent.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The main working environment for this position is a manufacturing environment which requires general PPE to be worn at all times. The plant environment will vary and exposure to heat, cold, noise, and odors is to be expected.

Position will have office space which is generally climate controlled.

In rare cases this position may be exposed to outdoor conditions for short periods of time. Travel to suppliers or customers may be required occasionally (travel is typically less than 10%).
