Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN)
The Medical-Surgical RN is a skilled and compassionate nursing professional responsible for delivering comprehensive care to adult patients with a wide range of medical conditions and surgical needs. This role requires strong clinical judgment, adaptability, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The Med-Surg RN collaborates with physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and support staff to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
+ Apply the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for adult patients with diverse medical and surgical diagnoses
+ Conduct thorough patient assessments, including vital signs, physical exams, and health histories
+ Administer medications, treatments, and IV therapies as prescribed
+ Monitor and document patient responses to interventions and changes in condition
+ Collaborate with healthcare providers to develop and adjust individualized care plans
+ Prepare patients for diagnostic tests, procedures, and surgeries
+ Provide preoperative and postoperative care, including wound care, pain management, and mobility support
+ Educate patients and families on disease processes, medications, discharge instructions, and self-care
+ Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR)
+ Adhere to infection control, safety, and quality standards
+ Respond promptly to emergencies such as rapid deterioration, falls, or code situations
+ Support patient advocacy and uphold patient rights and confidentiality
Minimum Requirements
+ Current Registered Nurse License in the state of practice
+ Minimum one year of professional nursing experience; Med-Surg experience preferred
+ Completion of Amergis' Competency Program (if applicable)
+ Current BLS certification (ACLS preferred)
+ TB screening and health clearance (as required by contract or regulation)
+ Compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations
+ Successful completion of new hire orientation and Med-Surg training
+ Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations
+ Strong communication skills and proficiency in English
+ Basic computer literacy
+ Must be at least 18 years of age

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides direct, hands-on care to patients and supports the overall functioning of the department in alignment with established policies and procedures. Working under the direction of a nurse or physician, the PCT ensures that patients consistently receive the highest quality of care.
Core responsibilities include completing activities of daily living (ADLs)-such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients-as well as point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose), vital signs, intake/output monitoring, weights, telemetry application, and prevention measures (TEDs/SCDs). PCTs also perform tasks including specimen collection, simple dressings, restraint placement/removal, bladder scans, and patient transport ('ticket to ride').
In addition, depending on department needs, PCTs may be trained and maintain competency in advanced skills such as phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube clamping/removal.
Responsibilities:
+ Deliver safe, compassionate, and efficient patient care, supporting ADLs and assisting with procedures and therapies.
+ Provide feedback to RNs and promptly report changes in patient condition.
+ Support patients and families with education under RN direction.

+ Enrollment in a Nursing Program with one of the following:

+ At least 6 months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with Patient Care Technician competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, OR
+ Completion of at least 1 clinical rotation in a nursing program
+ Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician class upon hire
+ Successful completion of basic information system training

- Perform services for patients including bathing using basin-less bath products, oral hygiene, oral feeding and care of hair
- Participate in hourly rounds
- Transport patients to and from various treatment centers when necessary, and assist transporters in moving patients in and out of stretchers and wheelchairs
- Maintain the cleanliness of various instruments and equipment such as bedpans, urinals and wheelchairs
- Keep patients’ rooms in clean and orderly condition
- Maintain unit stock levels of supplies and equipment as directed
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED OR relevant work experience (3+ years)
- BLS is required within 90 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications
- Hospital experience as a nursing assistant, certification as a nursing assistant or experience in a related field (i.e. medical assistant, actively enrolled RN student)
