JOB SUMMARY

This job is responsible for providing general support to an assigned work unit relating to a clean environment for patient care, patient mobility and maintenance of equipment and to gain practical work experience and clinical training for transition to other healthcare roles (e.g. CNA). An incumbent is provided exposure to functions and activities specific to the healthcare industry and specific job duties are structured to fit the needs of the assigned department. Assigned work activities may include furnishing information to authorized persons, providing clerical assistance/data entry support and related work of similar purpose and complexity.

Work is performed under direct supervision in accordance with established guidelines and practices. If assigned to assist with patient care or transport, work is performed under the direction of a licensed patient care provider. Work requires adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines as well as the safety, risk management and standard precaution standards of the work unit.

This position is intended to be of limited duration while an employee attends accredited CNA program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Transports patients to and from nursing units and ancillary departments in a manner conducive to patient safety and comfort.

  • Assists, under the direction of a licensed healthcare provider, with lifting, turning and transporting patients.

  • Performs housekeeping duties associated with a clean environment for patient care; restocks supplies/linens; empties trash/linen; strips rooms prior to EVS activity.

  • Assists with cleaning and stocking of department equipment and related maintenance.

  • Performs clerical work and light office tasks, including packaging patient education materials, assembling FIT test, etc.; provides data entry support; assists with projects as assigned.

  • Provides support for inpatient floors; sits a patient bedside for purposes of general visitation and non-clinical assistance; transports urgent specimens; serves as unit access screener; hand hygiene audits.

  • Delivers food trays to patient rooms.

  • Acts as a resource for patients/visitors to collect information requested or concerns; resolving or bringing issues forward as appropriate.

  • Performs related duties as assigned and within the scope of an unlicensed individual.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Demonstrates the need for minimal supervision and proficient skill in promoting independence in daily living activities. * This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Updated as of July 1, 2025: This position is eligible for "Supplement Basic Shift Premium" for 24/7 Facilities. Employees who are assigned to a facility that provides direct care to residents, patients, and/or clients and whose duties are required to be performed on location will receive an additional one dollar ($1.00) per hour of supplemental basic shift premium for each hour of basic shift premium. This shift premium does not apply to overtime hours. The supplemental basic shift premium shall expire on June 29, 2027.

Some of what you'll do:

* Assist or supervise assigned residents with activities of daily living under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.
* Promote resident-centered care and ensure that Veterans are treated with dignity and respect.
* Assist residents with personal care and daily living activities such as bathing, personal grooming, dressing, and eating. 
* Accurately obtain and record vital signs and other resident data.
* Observe, document, and report changes in resident's condition or behavior to the licensed practical nurse.

Required:

* A combination of education and experience may be considered on a year-for-year basis. Experience must be relevant to the position.
* Valid Washington state license to practice as a nursing assistant certified.
* Six (6) months of experience involving customer service in a healthcare setting or six (6) months of experience involving direct patient care.
* Must be proficient in the English language and be able to read, write and speak English.

 Preferred/Desired:

* Long-term nursing care experience.

Special Requirements:

* Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
* Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
* Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
* Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and be capable of reaching a minimum of 36" using proper technique to stock shelves and access supplies. Employee must also be able to push or pull with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner during the entire workday.
* Must have the ability to speak, read, and write in the English language for medical charts and data entry.
* Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
* Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
