JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for enhancing Patient Throughput throughout the Medical Center and Chronic Disease Management Clinic.

SURGERY/CARDIOVASCULAR SERVICES ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR:

IF PERFORMING RN-FIRST ASSIST DUTIES:

Assists on all cardiovascular surgical procedures as directed by the surgeon.

Functions as the first assistant at surgery in the general and obstetric surgical suites.

Assists the surgeon by providing intraoperative tissue retraction.

Assists with intraoperative hemostasis.

Assists with intraoperative tissue manipulation. Uses surgical instruments and suture material to manipulate tissue as directed by the surgeon.

Assists with intraoperative wound closure. Sutures tissue, using instruments and suture material as directed by the surgeon.

Preoperative- assists with: review of procedure prior to the case; opening and set up of the operating room suite; either preoperative counts or patient assessment as coordinated with the circulating RN; transfer of the patient to the OR bed; anesthesia induction if requested to do so by the circulating RN; and positioning the patient for the surgical procedure.

Interoperative- scrub in and assist in the draping of the patient; assist the surgeon within the parameters of standardized procedures; and assist in counts as needed.

Postoperative- assists with: the application of the patient's dressings; transfer from the OR bed; accompany the patient to the PACU if required; and clean up and turn over of the operating room.

May assist with specialty procedures including minimally invasive vein/arterial harvesting, closure of deep fascia layer, insertion of invasive monitoring lines and cardiac sternal wound closure.

IF PERFORMING RN CIRCULATOR DUTIES:

Assesses basic patient needs, including recognition of abnormal diagnostic data, and potential problems related to the proposed surgical intervention and communicates appropriate information to the physician and other members of the surgical team.

Provides the ability to modify assessment criteria based on the age of the patient, psychosocial and physical needs.

Implements patient's plan of care by evaluating patient's response to care. Organizes and adjusts assignments according to patient's needs.

Facilitates patient transfer to appropriate postoperative unit, ensuring patient safety and communication with receiving patient care staff.

Demonstrates understanding in use of patient care equipment and instrumentation. Responsible for knowledge of emergency equipment and supplies, including the crash cart, airway management cart, and the malignant hypothermia cart. Timely written referral of any malfunctioning or defective equipment.

Assures that all medications are administered properly 100% of the time, including IV's as prescribed by physician; knows actions, indications, precautions, adverse reactions, dosage and route of administration on all drugs before administering to the patient.

Maintains clear communication and rapport with patient/family as appropriate for setting. Gives and documents emotional support and keeps patient/family informed of progress.

Assures that patient's personal hygiene needs are met, immediate environment is clean and safe.

Maintains a current and complete medical record. Coordinates admission, transfer and discharge of patient with appropriate personnel and documents observations, assessment treatments and outcome as necessary.

CARDIAC CATH LAB ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR: Coordinates overall clinical program and ensures processes are in place to assure smooth operations and patient flow for the clinical activities of cardiology services specific to heart valve devices (TAVR).

Develops and implements required elements of an effective clinical program such as:

Develops methods to ensure prompt access to care.

Ensures processes are in place to provide coordinated patient flow across Physicians clinical sites.

Develops collaborative partnerships with inpatient and outpatient facilities implementing the heart valve

device.

Develops & implements clinical guidelines.

Aligns EMR to support care delivery.

Facilitates establishment of clinical trial protocols at all sites in partnership with the Valve Consortium.

Provides program and clinical input to marketing team to ensure web and related marketing tools are up to date.

Practice Development:

Develops & provides oversight of clinical program at affiliated hospitals.

Directs development of education materials.

Develops educational materials and training program for all patient care staff (inpatient and outpatient) who will participate in the clinical trial.

Helps develop valve program at affiliated hospitals that provide a referral base of patients.

The Assistant Dean will assist the Dean with instructional and management responsibilities for the specified Workforce Development site, be responsible for providing site supervision of nursing program activities, assist the Assistant Dean, Workforce Development with implementing special projects, and work with and function under the supervision of the Dean.

Job Responsibilities

Assists the Dean and Assistant Dean, Workforce Development with planning, developing, managing, updating, and evaluating all aspects of the program including, but not limited to:

  • Faculty and staff;
  • Clinical site liaison;
  • Clinical calendars and matrix;
  • Curriculum development and implementation;
  • Program compliance with Board and/or accreditor rules and regulations; site visits;
  • Student advocate;
  • Program policies and procedures;
  • Faculty and student handbooks;
  • Program budget;
  • Supplies and equipment to meet program objectives.

Assists with preparing data and other written materials for all required state and Board requirements, reports, proposals, self-studies, surveys, and site visits.

  • Assists with maintaining on-site student records on site
  • Collaborates with Human Resources to maintain required faculty and staff documentation;
  • Identifies need for obtaining outside resources for the nursing program;
  • Serves on program committees;
  • Assists with admission process and orientation;
  • Maintains teaching load of 50% in skills lab, sim lab, and/or clinical

Clinical Responsibilities

The Assistant Dean assists the Dean with the following aspects as relates to clinical sites:

  • Thorough assessment of the ability of the agency to provide clinical experience that meets the objectives for application of theory and clinical course objectives. The assessment includes an analysis of risk, hazards and safety of all students, as well as ensuring adequate staffing to handle clinical objectives;
  • Meets with specific clinical faculty and communicates with the Academic Program Manager regarding agency placements and to confirm number of students, faculty assignments, dates, times, and clinical objectives. Completes and forwards clinical approval forms as required prior to initiating clinical rotations;
  • Meets monthly with Clinical Partner and Assistant Dean, Workforce Development to review clinical operations;
  • Participates with the assigned clinical consortium;
  • Ensures clinical evaluations are completed in a timely manner by assigned faculty;
  • Collects and disseminates semester-end student and clinical site evaluations data to the Assistant Dean, Workforce Development;
  • Communicates with the Clinical Education Management Department to maintain clinical facility contract updates;
  • Maintains minutes of inter-agency meetings.

Faculty Responsibilities

Participate as a member of the faculty teaching team in preparation and presentation of learning activities within the nursing curriculum.

  • Assist with strategic planning and assessment of instructional initiatives to ensure quality of program.
  • Utilize principles of teaching that recognize the characteristics of the adult learner;
  • Makes continuous efforts to improve quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing different and innovative methodologies and techniques in teaching;
  • Demonstrates willingness to acquire skills for utilizing online activities as enhancers to course content/material during interactive teaching and learning;
  • Ensures that clinical assignments, clinical rotation matrixes and calendars are completed one month prior to start of next rotation;
  • Confirms that faculty is consistently following policies and guidelines as related to student clinical rotation experience;
  • Ensures that student performance in theory and clinical learning objectives and outcomes is completed and documented in a timely manner by all faculty;
  • Provides access to students for ongoing communication through scheduling of office hours, electronic communication and other appropriate methods;
  • Provides feedback of clinical performance by students and faculty when completing site visit to facilities;
  • Reviews student learning material on an ongoing basis and provides input for revision to faculty and at curriculum meeting; follows through as indicated;
  • Oversees completion of student attendance records, skills check-off forms, and program data collection in maintained according to policies;
  • Submits required program reports and forms to the Assistant Dean, Workforce Development in a timely manner;
  • Keeps current with new technologies and safety regulations;
  • Participates in student advising activities;
  • Participates in committee activities that support the mission and function of the nursing program;
  • Attends faculty meetings or delegates as indicated to faculty;

Student Responsibilities

Develops skills lab and clinical site orientation, in conjunction with faculty and clinical partner;

  • Participates in the planning and review process for the recruitment and admission of qualified nursing students;
  • Advises and provide academic support to nursing students as indicated;
  • Leads bi-weekly At-Risk meetings;
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Dean, Workforce Development & Campus Deans, ensures that all students have completed the necessary documentation and met the requirements for graduation and state licensing exam.

Qualifications
  1. Current valid and clear California Registered Nursing License (for locations located in CA); or Registered Nursing License from state in which WFD site is located;
  2. A minimum of a completed Bachelor's degree with enrollment in an outside Master's Program or enrollment in our Unitek Master's program using our Tuition Assistance.
  3. Course work in nursing, education, or administration required;
  4. A minimum of one year teaching experience in pre- or post-licensure nursing programs (associate, baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral);
  5. One year's continuous experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care and/or equivalent experience as determined by the Board of Nursing;
  6. Demonstrated leadership skills;
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  8. Committed to diversity, as defined by the California law;
  9. Ability to work collaboratively with external and internal stakeholders;
