Job Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking an experienced Certified Nursing Assistant ( CNA ) to join our Ambulatory Clinical Care operation. The ambulatory group consists of 12 pediatric subspecialty divisions and service lines. This position provides patient care at the direction of a clinic manager and medical assistant supervisors. The CNA provides assistive care to patients; facilitates the efficient delivery of patient care; supports the professional role of licensed staff and providers; offers support and assistance as directed by licensed staff in rendering basic healthcare to patients; and assists with scribing and clerical functions as a multi-skilled auxiliary worker.

University of Utah Pediatric clinic locations are primarily housed in Primary Children’s Hospital outpatient clinics in Salt Lake City and Lehi. Incumbents must be willing and able to commute to either location.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Clinical Functions

  1. Act as a medical scribe to assigned providers, duties include: recording a medical provider’s interactions with patients, assisting with clerical duties related to medical documentation, filling out paperwork, summaries and letters, taking notes during patient visits and documenting them in the electronic health records system. Using a team approach to work effectively with multiple providers and communicating with patients professionally.

  2. Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures such as recording temperatures, pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry, height/weight, and responses to standardized medical history questions.

  3. Reinforces or assists in educating and teaching patients/families as delegated by the professional care provider.

  4. Recognize and appropriately respond to emergency situations.

  5. Reports all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member.

  6. Performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments ( CLIA ) Waved Lab tests as identified by department and reports results to the appropriate personnel.

  7. Performs additional functions such as EKG’s.

  8. Acts as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination as requested. Assists provider with procedures, treatments, and interventions.

  9. Monitors and cleans assigned patient examination rooms, unit areas and unit equipment. Restocks set levels of medical supplies. Reports outdated supplies and necessary equipment repairs.

  10. Under the direction of licensed staff, schedules appointments, procedures, and diagnostic tests.

  11. Assists in routine clerical functions such as filing of medical information in patient’s records, locating and compiling department charts, and obtaining medical records from other providers/offices.

  12. Attends and completes mandatory education including infection prevention and control, safety, CPR , equipment usage, and procedures according to hospital and department policies.

  13. May assist with patient and family education by providing educational material and general health information to patients and family members.

  14. May assist with transportation of patients to ancillary departments or inpatient units as directed by licensed staff.

Care Coordination

  1. Schedules, coordinates, and monitor appointments, tests, and treatments/procedures.

  2. Maintains medical records and other information. Accurately documents patient history, physical and vital information into the medical record.

  3. Effectively uses computer applications as needed in the office setting.

Comments

Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

  • This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Current certification as a Nursing Assistant with the State of Utah,or completion of first round of clinical and current enrollment in approved nursing education program or successful completion of RN program.

For those enrolled in a nursing program, incumbents have three months from completion of RN program to obtain an RN license. If an RN license is not obtained by the end of those three months, the incumbent must immediately obtain a current CNA .

Individuals in this job code with an RN license must also have a CNA certification if they remain in it longer than three months.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a nurse aide training and competency evaluation program approved by the State as meeting the requirements of §483.151 through §483.154, and is currently listed in good standing on the State nurse aide registry. Note: An individual is not considered to have completed a training and competency evaluation program or a competency evaluation program if since the individual's most recent completion of the program(s) there has been a continuous period of 24 consecutive months during none of which the individual furnished Hospice services for compensation. If there has been a 24-month lapse in furnishing services, the individual must complete another program.
  • Valid state driver's license and reliable automobile, current automobile insurance and being willing to operate personal car(s) necessitated by nature of job.
  • Current TB testing.
  • Current CPR card.
  • Listed on the nurse aide registry with no findings relating to client abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of client property.

The role of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is to work as and when required in support of the nursing team in providing high quality care and support. Customer Service

• Provide compassionate resident care services. Establish and maintain positive interactions with internal and external customers, including co-workers, facility employees and direct reports.
• Take responsibility for resolving customer's issues and concerns striving to make outstanding experiences for our customers. Customers include residents, families, vendors and other employees.
• Promote positive relationships with residents, visitors, and regulators, to include presenting a professional appearance.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
• Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
• Provide basic nursing care within the Nursing Assistant's scope of practice.
• Able to explain and demonstrate fire/emergency procedures and must participate in any emergency or drill activities.
• Properly use and maintain facility equipment.
• Show respect for facility property.

• Establish effective communication/interactions with residents and families.
• Ensure residents' right to privacy (visual and auditory).
• Show respect for residents' personal property.
• Recognize a resident's ability to make choices and support these within the constraints of the care giving environment.
• Take and record temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure.
• Ambulate residents.
• Apply proper lifting and transferring techniques.
• Provide proper positioning and use of postural supports.
• Ensure residents' comfort while assisting them in achieving their highest practicable level of functioning.
• Meet current documentation standards and policies and complete within shift.
• Report significant change in a resident's condition to the facilities Nurse Manager and the care giving team.
• Maintain resident confidentiality at all times.
Safeguarding and Safety
• To ensure that residents are safeguarded against the risk of abuse. This includes but is not limited to: a zero tolerance for harassment and violence; following infection control procedures; following safe patient handling as required with your specific job position.
• Demonstrate safe practices in regard to resident's comfort and safety by applying knowledge of proper body alignment for self and resident. Practice and promote adherence to institutional safety codes.
• Comply with all facility safety policies, regulations and requirements regarding fire and life safety.
• Meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of the facility.
Other Functions and Responsibilities
• Flexibility and ability to work under pressure.
• The ability to prioritize a busy workload.
• Must adhere to Code of Conduct and Business Ethics policy, including documentation and reporting responsibilities.
• This is a position in health care facilities open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Shifts on holidays and working during inclement weather may be required.
• Complete and submit all timesheets correctly and in a timely manner to enable authorization and payment.
• Complete annual education requirements.
• Wear proper identification.
• Report to assignment on time and as scheduled.
Physical and Sensory Requirements
This position is very active and requires:
• Walking, standing, reaching, bending, crouching, grasping, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
• The ability to work at a rapid apace for an entire shift.

• The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing up to 40 pounds. Following patient care plan and using a variety of equipment, the employee may frequently move, reposition and transfer residents of varying weights up to 300 lbs.
• Must have a finger and hand dexterity sufficient to type, handle and manipulate instruments and operate departmental equipment.
• Have a working understand of English: ability to read and write; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to verbally communicate with residents and others; ability to hear and respond to pages.
• Ability to remain calm in emergency situations and when handling multiple tasks.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant in good standing with the state, or must within four (4) months of employment successfully complete state-required and competency evaluation program. Must maintain a current certification in the state throughout employment.
• Must achieve 12 hours of in service education annually as required by federal regulations (as well as meet state requirements, if exceeds federal).
• Proven ability to communicate effectively and positively and favorably to residents and families and to work cooperatively with facility staff and supervisors.
• Must have ability to read, write and follow oral and written directions at a level necessary to accomplish the job.
• Must be capable of maintaining regular attendance.
• Must meet all local health regulations. This includes drug screening, criminal background investigation and reference inquiry.
