Patient Care Technician / Acute Care / Part Time / Days Delivers direct/indirect care to patients of all ages from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, and adult to geriatric, under the delegation/direction/supervision of a physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse. Assists in maintaining a safe, clean environment and performs clerical/administrative functions as assigned. Demonstrates critical thinking/clinical reasoning in decision making to assure the delivery of safe, quality, timely, compassionate, and cost-effective care to the patient populations served by the department(s)/unit(s)/area(s). Effectively communicates and collaborates both intra- and interdepartmentally with patients, families, physicians, administration and other healthcare team members. Documents accurately and in a timely manner. Adheres to organizational policies and procedures; and regulatory/accrediting body requirements.

Job Duties:

  • Under the delegation/direction/supervision of the physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse and within the scope of practice, provides/assists with and accurately documents activities of daily living (ADLs) which include but are not limited to
  • Bathing
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Oral care
  • Hair Care
  • Toileting
  • Personal hygiene
  • Preparing patients for meal times by assisting those that need help in getting positioned properly.
  • Feeding patients requiring help or assisting with tray/food set-up
  • Providing fresh drinking water.
  • Observing and recording the patient's intake and output, and/or calorie count; and notifying the RN of any deviations from the usual.
  • Obtaining accurate blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, temperature, and SaO2 and notifying the RN of abnormal vital signs immediately.
  • Applying and/or removing non-sterile dressings and compresses and reporting abnormal findings to the RN.
  • Changing bed linen and straightening/organizing/tidying the patient's room throughout shift; providing extra linens, blankets, as needed; safeguarding personal items.
  • Answering call lights promptly and assisting/following up on patient needs.
  • Transporting patients. Patients who require cardiac monitoring must also be accompanied by an ACLS trained staff member.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma
  • Current STNA (State Tested Nurse Aide) certification preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR (BLS) certification required. Previous neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patient care experience preferred.

The Registered Nurse assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the nursing care provided to a group of patients. This nurse leads the nursing team members in the care as directed by the attending physician and in collaboration with other health care providers in accordance with the philosophy and policies of ProMedica Acute Care Hospitals. Actively participates in the creation of an environment that fosters patient, family, physician and employee satisfaction. Ensures decisions made are based on patient and family centered care philosophy utilizing evidenced based practices, and focused on safety, customer satisfaction, and quality outcomes.
Scope of Service: The Registered Nurse provides nursing care to individuals and groups which require specialized knowledge, judgment, and skill derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, spiritual/cultural, and nursing sciences. The Registered Nurse functions within the full scope of nursing practice as noted by the Board of Nursing of their designated state for which they are practicing in addition to compliance with any of the hospitals accrediting bodies.
Graduate of an approved school of professional nursing
Previous experience in an acute care setting preferred
Current state appropriate license as a Registered Nurse
BCLS
ACLS required within one year of hire
PALS required within one year of hire

ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Responsible for checking expiration dates, stock rotation and removal of excess inventory in managed inventory locations.

Education: Doctoral, Master's or Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution or transcripts showing 60 semester hours from an accredited institution indicating 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination OR meet an alternate qualification route for Testing Personnel for High Complexity Testing as detailed in §493.1489
Years of Experience: Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS OR meet an alternate experience route for High Complexity Testing Personnel as detailed in §493.1489.
Certification: American Society of Pathology (ASCP) MLS or Categorical eligible at time of hire with certification achieved within one year of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Personal Protective Equipment: Lab Coat, Gloves, Protective Eyewear, as required.

Must be able to attain all health requirements as identified by the organization (i.e., PPD, respirator training, vaccines, as appropriate).
Must be able to move about hospital and between workstations, and prolonged periods of standing.
Must be able to frequently move, lift or carry light to heavy patients or equipment.
Must be able to lift medium materials, non-material handling; continuous standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching; frequent pushing, pulling, and squatting.
***Occasional sitting, stairs, and kneeling.
