THE OPPORTUNITY
Silvus is seeking a **_Machine Learning Engineer_** with a strong background in wireless communications to join our innovative _R&D team_ . This role will report to the _R&D Director, Machine Learning_ and will focus on applying machine learning and data-driven techniques to improve the performance, efficiency, and adaptability of Silvus' advanced MIMO radios and wireless networking systems. The successful individual in this role will work closely with experts in wireless communications, DSP, networking, and embedded systems to develop ML-driven features that solve real-world problems in dynamic and challenging RF environments.
This position is based at Silvus Technologies' headquarters in the heart of vibrant **West Los Angeles,** **CA** and is on a hybrid schedule; a minimum of 3 days onsite per week is expected. On-site days are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Research, design, and implement machine learning algorithms to enhance performance in wireless communication systems (e.g., link adaptation, interference mitigation, anomaly detection, spectrum sensing).
+ Analyze real-world RF datasets to extract insights and develop predictive models.
+ Develop software prototypes and integrate ML algorithms with Silvus' radio firmware and networking stack.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define ML use cases and evaluate the impact of deployed models.
+ Contribute to the design of data pipelines and infrastructure for training, testing, and validating models.
+ Participate in performance benchmarking and iterative improvement cycles.
+ Stay current with the latest Machine Learning research for wireless and embedded systems.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
+ Minimum of 3 years of experience in machine learning, with demonstrated application to real-world problems; 1 year of machine learning experience with a PhD.
+ Strong foundation in supervised and unsupervised learning, signal processing, and statistical modeling.
+ Experience with Python ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, etc.).
+ Familiarity with wireless communication concepts (e.g., PHY/MAC layers, MIMO, OFDM, spectrum access, SDRs).
+ Proficiency in MATLAB or C/C++ for signal processing algorithm development.
+ Security Clearance: Active U.S. Government SECRET clearance or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.

  • Identify new opportunities to leverage data to improve Gusto’s products and help risk management team to understand business requirements and develop tailored solutions

Here’s what we’re looking for
  • 8+ years experience conducting statistical analyses on large datasets and deep domain knowledge in machine learning.
  • Proven experience in the credit risk modeling or fraud risk modeling using logistic regression, random forest, Xgboost or neural networks
  • Experience applying a variety of statistical and modeling techniques using Python, R or another statistical modeling language, as indicated by familiarity with many of the following techniques - predictive modeling, anomaly detection, ensemble methods, natural language processing (NLP, optional).
  • Strong programming skills - comfortable with all phases of the data science development process, from initial analysis and model development all the way through to deployment
  • Excellent communication skills - able to effectively deliver findings and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and compelling fashion
  • PhD or Masters plus equivalent experience in a quantitative field is a plus
  • Experience in the Fintech industry is a plus

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $170,000 - $05,000 in Denver, 185,000- 225,000 in Los Angeles, 205,000 - 250,000 for San Francisco, New York, and Seattle, and 185,000 - 225,000 CAD for Toronto, Canada. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gustos subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

About the Role

As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will work closely with applied science practitioners and engineers to rapidly build, deploy, and iterate high-quality ML infrastructure solutions at scale, ensuring both reliability and effectiveness. Your deep expertise in the machine learning model development cycle, along with a strong understanding of data pipelines and data infrastructure, will be crucial in developing a dependable and scalable ML infrastructure for all of Gusto to rely on. The ideal candidate is passionate about developing software, documenting optimal processes, working with data, and understanding the needs of end users. A strong grasp of ML and data infrastructure is essential, as you will work with stakeholders to build efficient solutions to help our partners scale x times better.

Day-to-day Responsibilities
  • Drive core components of our ML Platform technical roadmap to design and build MLOps solutions with automated pipelines and standardized processes to build, deploy, run, monitor, debug, and retrain ML Models.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance frameworks for machine learning model development and deployment.
  • Collaborate with the ML model builders and application owners to determine business requirements and SLAs for API-enabled services.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance infrastructure supporting machine learning services.
  • Support the development of new patterns for the deployment of machine learning models with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
What we’re looking for
  • At least 10 years of software engineering experience (Python, Ruby or Java).
  • Demonstrated experience architecting and developing infrastructure and platform services for machine learning lifecycle, such as feature stores, model development, deployment, and observability tools and solutions.
  • Experience with at least one of the major cloud platforms (AWS preferred but not required).
  • Experience with MLOps tooling such as Kubeflow, AWS Sagemaker, Mlflow, or similar.
Compensation & Locations

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $157,000-$94,000/year in Denver, 188,000- 222,000/year in Los Angeles, and 190,000- 235,000/year for San Francisco, Seattle and New York.
