JOB SUMMARY
Skilled construction laborer performs required carpentry and/or related work. Works with construction general foreman and others in plant operations in order to complete projects on time and in a safe manner.
Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a product or service to leadership and staff that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the patient and family experience. Recognizes and demonstrates understanding of patient and family centered care.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS
Responsible To: Director of Facilities Services Maintenance Supervisor

Workers Supervised: None

Inter-Relationships: Maintenance personnel, personnel from other departments, patients, visitors, internal and external customers.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. General carpentry.
  2. Drywall installation and finishing.
  3. Interior and exterior plumbing.
  4. Minor plumbing repair and/or installation.
  5. Minor electrical repair and/or installation.
  6. Follow and execute scopes of work with outstanding quality and attention to detail.
  7. Maintain clean and organized job sites.
  8. Abide by industry and company safety protocols.

DEPARTMENTAL AND ADDITIONAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
  1. High School diploma or GED required.
EXPERIENCE
  1. Must have 3-5 years of experience in home maintenance/repair and remodeling projects.
  2. Must have direct experience and solid working knowledge of commercial construction.
  3. Must have ability to read blueprints and specifications.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES/MOTOR SKILLS
These physical requirements are not exhaustive and additional job related physical requirements may be added on an as needed basis. Corrective devices may be used to meet physical requirements.
  1. Sedentary Work: Frequently required to stand, kneel and crouch. On a daily basis may be required to move about, sit, climb stairs and bend. Is frequently required to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. May be required to push/pull/carry items between 20-100 lbs.
  2. Vision: Requires the ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. Near acuity: Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Midrange Acuity: Clarity of vision at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet.
  3. Motor Coordination: While performing the duties of the job, it is required to regularly perform functions that include using hand and finger movement, handle or feel objects, be able to use tools or equipment that requires reaching with hands and arms. Must be able to travel independently throughout the hospital; access patients/families including areas confined by space and/or equipment.
  4. Speaking/Hearing: Ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening.
  5. Must be able to handle tools, organize a number of daily tasks, maintain safe work habits and complete written work performed, including preventive maintenance records.
  6. Must be able to use a personal computer to track work orders, check status of HVAC and operate other maintenance software programs.

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL ABILITIES
  1. Proficiency using modern office, computer and telephone equipmentas used by Memorial Healthcare.
  2. Fine hand/eye coordination required to perform small device repairs.
  3. Ability to safely operate mechanical and electrical powered tools.
  4. Ability to grasp small items and use hand tools simultaneously.
  5. Must have a valid Michigan driver's license.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL ABILITIES
  1. Ability to adapt and maintain focus in fast paced, quickly changing or stressful situations.
  2. Ability to read and interpret a variety of documents including, but not limited to policies, operating instructions, white papers, regulations, rules and laws.
  3. Ability to comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions.
  4. Ability to work under stress, interruptions and tight deadlines.
  5. Must have independent judgement to determine how to function in an emergency situation.
  6. Ability to coordinate work load and follow-through to completion, including documentation of completed repair and preventive maintenance work orders.
  7. Ability to understand mechanical equipment operations and repair.

ESSENTIAL SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
  1. Able to see for the purpose of reading information received in formats including but not limited to paper, computer, reports, bulletins, updates, manuals.
  2. Able to hear for work-related purposes.
  3. Able to smell smoke to respond appropriately in an emergency situation.
  4. Correctable hearing equivalent to less than 25% less is necessary in order to discern various sounds that will assure safety of the physical plant, equipment and occupants.
  5. Able to identify hot and cold.
  6. Able to effectively communicate with co-workers, other employees, patients and visitors.
  7. Vision correctable to 20/40 is necessary, includes color and depth perception, and peripheral field of vision.

Summary

This position repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances, using hand tools and testing instruments to supply electrical power for lighting and equipment operations at the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

(25%)* Inspects and tests electrical lighting, signal, communication, and power circuits and equipment, as well as distribution panel.

(25%)* Repairs electrical circuits and equipment. Dismantles electrical machinery. Replaces faulty or defective mechanical and electrical parts. Restores electrical systems.

(25%)* Installs new wiring and electrical machinery. Studies blueprints and diagrams to ascertain layout location, and specifications of items to be installed.

(25%)* Estimates quantities of materials needed and prepares requisition.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs minor carpentry, plastering and painting in connection with electrical work.

May perform work other than electrical in maintenance and construction.

Instructs and/or helps less experienced maintenance personnel as required and/or directed.

Copes with and handles discrepancies and variations from regular system or procedure, which may occasionally arise.

Maintains records and performs other duties as required including, but not limited to, snow/ice removal and grounds maintenance.

Knowledge of electrical construction, blueprint reading, electricity, mathematics and physics as normally

acquired through completion of trade or vocational school.

State of Michigan Journeymans License.

Must have knowledge of NEC, NFPA, and local regulations.

Knowledge of solid state, power panel control. Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing must be done annually.

Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death.
