The AWS Graviton Software team is seeking Software Engineers to drive performance optimization of open source projects, internal services and customer applications. We are looking for engineers who have an interest in performance engineering and/or have relevant experience that can translate to these areas.
The role focuses on optimizing software up and down the stack - from working on the Linux kernel to debugging and optimizing C++ or Rust applications to digging into and optimizing assembly code. This doesn't mean you have or will have all those skills, but you'll have a chance to learn from those who do.
We look at performance across all types of applications and workloads: databases, web services, games, video encoding, ML and HPC, and a variety of internal and customer services and applications to ensure they are taking advantage of Graviton's capabilities. We maintain profiling tools to help AWS customers and internal teams debug performance related problems, often working with them directly find root causes and resolve their issues. We work with the hardware teams to benchmark performance and find optimizations in next generation hardware.
Key job responsibilities
As a Graviton Software Developer, you will have the opportunity to learn and contribute on a variety of different projects:
- Optimize software performance for AWS customers and internal services (such as S3, Lambda, EMR, ElastiCache, RDS) by troubleshooting bottlenecks and improving architectures and algorithms on Graviton.
- Contribute performance improvements and bug fixes to Linux kernel and other open source projects.
- Develop frameworks to analyze hardware and software performance. Create automated systems for collecting and analyzing processor, OS, and workload performance data.
- Use performance tools (sysstat, sysctl, perf, Aperf) to identify and resolve software bottlenecks.
- Apply and expand your expertise in system design, implementation, and data analysis.

Graviton delivers the best price/performance in AWS data centers. For the past 2 years, Graviton has powered the majority of new EC2 capacity and is used by over 90% of our largest customers.
You'll drive performance optimization across open source projects, internal services, and customer applications, working on everything from Linux kernel development to C++/Rust debugging to assembly-level optimization. AWS Neuron is the complete software stack for the AWS Trainium (Trn1/Trn2) and Inferentia (Inf1/Inf2) our cloud-scale Machine Learning accelerators. This role is for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in the Distribute Training team for AWS Neuron, responsible for development, enablement and performance tuning of a wide variety of ML model families, including massive-scale Large Language Models (LLM) such as GPT and Llama, as well as Stable Diffusion, Vision Transformers (ViT) and many more.
The ML Distributed Training team works side by side with chip architects, compiler engineers and runtime engineers to create, build and tune distributed training solutions with Trainium instances. Experience with training these large models using Python is a must. FSDP (Fully-Sharded Data Parallel), Deepspeed, Nemo and other distributed training libraries are central to this and extending all of this for the Neuron based system is key.

You will lead efforts to build distributed training support into PyTorch and JAX using XLA, the Neuron compiler, and runtime stacks. This role is responsible for development, enablement and performance tuning of a wide variety of ML model families, including massive scale large language models like GPT2, GPT3 and beyond, as well as stable diffusion, Vision Transformers and many more.
The ML Distributed Training team works side by side with chip architects, compiler engineers and runtime engineers to create , build and tune distributed training solutions with Trn1. Experience training these large models using Python is a must. FSDP, Deepspeed and other distributed training libraries are central to this and extending all of this for the Neuron based system is key.
Key job responsibilities
This role will help lead the efforts building distributed training support into Pytorch, Tensorflow using XLA and the Neuron compiler and runtime stacks. This role will help tune these models to ensure highest performance and maximize the efficiency of them running on the customer AWS Trainium and Inferentia silicon and the TRn1 , Inf1 servers.
