Work Environment
As an IT, you are primarily stationed aboard ships at sea, while you'll serve aboard submarines as an ITS. You will also receive shore assignments. Your typical work environment will be a clean, climate-controlled indoor space used to house electronic equipment or computers.
Training & Advancement
Upon completion of initial training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes (known as Boot Camp), both ITS and ITs report for specialized training, including:
Class "A" Technical School (24 weeks) in Pensacola, FL (for ITs) or Groton, CT (for ITSs) for training on Microsoft, Cisco and Oracle computer software and hardware fundamentals, automatic data processing, security, and system theory and operation.
After "A" School, Information Systems Technician Submarines (ITS) will also attend submarine training:
Basic Enlisted Submarine School (8 weeks) in Groton, CT, for training in basic submarine systems. Note that this training is only for Information Systems Technician Submarines (ITS).
After completing training, ITs and ITSs will receive their first assignments. ITs may be assigned to a ship, communication station or shore station, while ITSs may be assigned to a submarine, communication station or shore station. Promotion opportunities are regularly available but competitive and based on performance.
Advanced Training
Advanced training as an Information Systems Technician may be available during later stages of your career. For those with further leadership aspirations and a college degree, Officer roles may be available, providing opportunities to lead and train others.
Post-Service Opportunities
Specialized training received and work experience gained in the course of service can lead to valuable credentialing and occupational opportunities in related fields in the civilian world, such as IT and network support, computer programming, web development, and information security.
Education Opportunities
Beyond offering access to professional credentials and certifications, Navy technical and operational training as an Information Systems Technician can translate to credit hours toward a bachelor's or associate degree through the American Council on Education.

Qualifications & Requirements
A high-school diploma or equivalent is required to become an Enlisted Sailor and an Information Systems Technician.
Due to the sensitive nature of this role, you must be a U.S. citizen eligible for a "Top Secret" security clearance, which requires a background investigation. Immediate family members must also be U.S. citizens.
IT and ITS applicants should have good arithmetic, writing and speaking skills, and should be able to use and understand computers. You should also be able to perform detailed work, keep accurate records and work well with others as part of a team. Important physical attributes include good manual dexterity and physical strength.
ITS applicants must be willing to serve aboard submarines.
General qualifications may vary depending upon whether you're currently serving , whether you've served before or whether you've never served before .
Part-Time Opportunities
Serving part-time as a Navy Reserve Sailor, your duties will be carried out during your scheduled drilling and training periods. During monthly drilling, Information Systems Technicians in the Navy Reserve typically work at a location close to their homes.
For annual training, you may serve anywhere in the world, including locations in the U.S., at bases overseas, or in areas where humanitarian needs are great.

ABOUT THE ROLE
You will be a member of our multi-disciplinary team and will work under the direction of a project leader. Projects include new construction and renovation in educational, healthcare, sports, corporate commercial and science and technology.
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Perform basic to moderately complex construction drawings and specifications of telecommunications systems for building construction.
- Under limited supervision, design communications and/or telecommunication systems for healthcare, education/higher education and commercial clients, including electronic security and Audiovisual systems per applicable codes.
- Analyze engineering documents and layout systems in regard to components and parts. Research and respond to design issues.
- Participate in value engineering sessions with Architectural/Engineering team.
- Recommend improvements with reference standards and processes to improve quality, coordination, and to streamline production efforts.
- Assists in the review and markup of shop drawings and submittals.
- Assists in gathering information to respond to RFI's and review of change orders in the preparation of construction documents.
- Conduct job site visits to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress. Site visits frequently require a physical walk-through of site.
- Must be willing to perform overtime work and be willing to travel.
- May perform other duties as required.
- Minimum ABET/EAC Bachelor degree or equivalent required.
- Qualified candidates must have 4+ years of related experience.
- EIT/FE preferred.

- BASIC REQUIREMENTS GS-5 AND All GRADES: Experience must include Information Technology (IT) related experience that demonstrates each of the following four competencies: 1) Attention to Detail, 2) Customer Service, 3) Oral Communication and 4) Problem Solving.
- In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
- EXPERIENCE: One year IT-related experience which was at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service. IT related experience for this position includes: Basic knowledge of IT processing functions to understand the stages to automate a work process. Experience must have also included work with clients and customers to assess and/or address their needs and provide information or assistance relative to the products or services; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and identify and resolve problems, determine relevant information, demonstrate using sound judgment, and making recommendations. Experience may have been gained in work such as computer operator or assistant, computer sales representative, program analyst, or other positions that required the use or adaptation of computer programs and systems.
- OR
- EDUCATION: A bachelor's degree or equivalent degree at an accredited college or university in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management OR bachelor's degree in one or more of the fields identified above that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
- OR
- COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of experience and education at an accredited college or university equivalent to 4 years. You may combine the college credits you completed with any qualifying experience you have to total the equivalent of a four-year college education.

ABOUT THE ROLE
This entry-level position will be a member of our multi-disciplinary team and work under the direction of a project leader and licensed engineer. Projects include new construction and renovation in educational, healthcare, sports, corporate commercial and science and technology.

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Participates in the preparation of construction documents and basic specifications of telecommunications systems for building construction.
- Under direct supervision, may design telecommunication systems for healthcare, education/higher education and commercial clients, including fire alarm systems per applicable codes.
- Develop ability to analyze engineering documents and layout systems in regard to components and parts with engineering oversight.
- Under supervision develop knowledge of applicable codes for the application of telecommunication design.
- Recommend improvements with reference standards and processes to improve quality, coordination, and to streamline production efforts.
- Assists in the review and markup of shop drawings and submittals.
- Assists in gathering information to respond to RFI's and review of change orders in the preparation of construction documents.
- Assists in visiting job site to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress. Site visits frequently require a physical walk-through of site.
- May perform other duties as required.
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED
- Bachelor degree in a relevant field by hire date required.
- EIT/FE preferred.
- Related student internship work experience preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to effectively handle multiple projects.
- Experience in computer applications for engineering design programs (i.e. Revit, Navisworks or similar applications) preferred.
