Position Summary: The Employment Specialist provides employment readiness training coaching and support for disconnected youth ages 18-24 at the Next Generation Center. This position sources and obtains career internship and training opportunities for youth.

Essential Duties:

  • Understand and promote the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure alignment with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Sourcing and obtaining appropriate employment, internship, and training opportunities for transition youth.
  • Developing strong relationships with employer partners and facilitating activities with employers including site visits, recruiting events, career presentations, job shadowing, and other employment-related activities.
  • Assisting youth with the preparation of job search documents such as resumes, references, and job applications (online or on paper).
  • Providing ongoing post-placement support and troubleshooting for youth after placement in internships/employment.
  • Maintaining ongoing communication and positive relationships with employers/internship hosts, including troubleshooting.
  • Facilitating employment readiness groups on topics including, but not limited to career exploration, job search strategies, workplace skills, interviewing skills, goal setting, and career advancement.
  • Coaching youth individually on job search, interviewing, employment retention, and career management skills.
    Collaborate with the youth's Life Coach and other program staff in the interest of the youth's development of employability skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule; within the hours of operation of the Next Generation Center.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 2+ years of experience working in job development, and with difficult-to-engage adolescents.

    Reporting Relationships: Employment Specialists report to the Director of Social Services.

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

    Under the general supervision of the Director of Social Services, Employment Specialists are expected to perform the following principal duties and responsibilities.

    • Document all interactions and efforts with each resident in CARES.

    Qualifications

    Minimal Qualifications:

    Degree Requirement: Bachelor's degree in a related field (social work, mental health counseling, psychology, sociology, education, business, liberal arts, etc.) with at least one (1) -two (2) years' experience or ,
    • Associate Degree in a related field (Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Education, Business, Liberal Arts, etc.) with at least 2-3 years' experience.
    Other Qualifications:
    • Familiarity with NYC Shelter System with any population; single adults, mental health, substance use, HIV/AIDS, or any other related field.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Base salary range and benefits information for this position are being included in accordance with requirements of New York State and City pay transparency laws.     JOB SUMMARY

    • Develops and maintains weekly email network of job leads.

    • Administers WOTC / WTW tax credits to potential employers.

    • Contacts and maintains positive relationship with employers to identify job opportunities and listings.

    • Provides job readiness training/assessment and assists program participants in the formulation of job search plans for placement into permanent, full-time employment.

    • Market program participants to employers within the business community, as well as establish and maintain a network of employer contacts ready to hire program participants into various positions.

    • Provides follow-up services to participants and employers to improve and maintain job retention.

    • Documents all participant and employer contacts in CARES.

    • Identifies qualified applicants and conducts screening interviews, administers tests, checks references, and evaluates applicants’ qualifications.

    What do I need to apply?

    Education and Experience:High School Diploma required with work experience as a Placement Specialist/Job Developer. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum of two years recruiting experience placing candidates in occupations/positions which are in heavy demand.

    • Computer skills: Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Internet and other software as required.

    • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to network within the community and outside the community via phone/fax/emails and in person. Proficiency in English required. Bi-lingual (Spanish) is a plus.

    • Math Skills: Must be excellent.

    • Physical Performance: Ability to attend off-site meetings with community businesses.

    • Reasoning Ability: Good negotiation skills. Ability to make judgment calls, prioritize, multi-task.

    • Other Skills: Ability to work independently, establish rapport with program participants and business community, expertise at understanding client needs and matching clients with business contacts. Able to work independently using strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

    Community Options, Inc. is a national non-profit agency providing services to individuals with disabilities in 12 states.      We are Now Hiring a Full-time Employment Specialist in Brooklyn, NY to coach persons with developmental disabilities and prepare them for employment. The Employment Specialist will develop essential job skills for persons with disabilities and assist in job placement. This position will also support our Queens, NY region. Starting Pay is $20.00/per hour    Responsibilities
    • Provide the necessary assistance for people with disabilities to be placed in competitive employment. 
    • Coach the person with disabilities to develop independent job skills. 
    • Work side-by-side with persons with disabilities at job sites. 
    • Reinforce essential skills, or teach new skills such as developing a resume, conducting a successful job interview, and completing a job application. 
    • Accurately complete all documentation. 
    • Additional tasks and responsibilities may be assigned 
    • Employee must cooperate with the license and department staff in any inspection, inquiry, or investigation 
       Minimum Requirements
    • High school diploma or equivalent 
    • Two years’ full-time work experience in supporting people with disabilities 
    • Valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record
