At Houston Methodist, the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) position is responsible for functioning as novice to competent and demonstrates basic knowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriately and carry out delegated nursing assistant level tasks for assigned age-specific, diverse patient population, assisting in the delivery of patient care and services under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This position conducts hourly rounding to ensure patient needs are met and records data established by policy and procedure, and reports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse. Responds to the call light system, contacting nursing personnel as appropriate, and follows through with meeting patient needs.
+ Assists with maintaining, cleaning, and stocking of equipment and supplies as established on assigned unit. May serve as an in-house courier which may include retrieving blood, hand delivering labs, tele boxes, etc. Organizes the workflow, problem-solves basic and routine matters, and manages multiple ongoing priorities, seeking guidance and assistance from preceptor, licensed nurse, or management.
+ Contributes towards improving department scores for patient satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability, i.e., bedside shift handoff/report.
**QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Reports observations, conditions and problems of patients to licensed personnel to achieve desired patient outcomes. Provides for the privacy of patients and families, keeping the safety of the patient in mind.
+ Provides appropriate hand-off at change of shift at patient bedside to communicate and collaborate, promoting patient-centered care.
+ Conducts hourly rounding to ensure patient needs are met (four P's). Reports near misses and collaborates with the interprofessional health care team to improve patient safety.
+ Contributes towards improving quality and safety scores, through peer-to-peer accountability. Supports initiatives to prevent conditions such as pressure injuries, patient falls, and hospital-acquired infections.

**Job Summary and Qualifications**
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. 2. Opens and assists the team with supplies, instrument sets, suture selection and meeting benchmark turnovers
3. Assists the surgical suite in patient positioning, surgical preps, clipping and aids in the retrieving of x‐rays, equipment set up and tracking and removing instruments to and from the operating room suites
4. Rounds within their assigned surgical rooms to ensure that all turnovers are met and Supports the necessary patient movement and flow
5. Assists Registered Nurses, Surgical Scrubs and the Surgeons while preventing the disruption of the surgical case by retrieving supplies, relaying messages and managing the ancillary support of the surgical team
6. Anticipates the needs of the surgical team members and provides the necessary support and knowledge of surgical supplies, instruments and sutures
7. Sets up and tears down laparoscopic equipment, ensuring that printers, cameras and tubing is properly processed and arranged
8. Ensures that used surgical instruments are cleaned, replaced and properly returned to the decontamination department within SPD
9. Assists in the pre‐operative patient preparation once the patient has arrived in the operating room/includes placing grounding pad on patient and ensuring that the device is properly connected
10. Obtains the necessary skin preparation solutions and prepares the prep stand as needed
**Job Requirements**
**_Required Education and Experience_**
*High School Diploma/GED
*Based on location assignment may also require BLS/ACLS/ and or PALS
*One (1) year of related health care experience
**_Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training_**
*Ability to understand and develop processes that assist and aid the surgical team
*Good knowledge of operating room etiquette/processes/medical terminology
*Demonstrate competency in the opening and storing of sterile surgical supplies/sterile field

**Job Summary and Responsibilities**
Performs a variety of routine tasks to support the delivery of safe, effective, cost-efficient patient care as delegated by the RN. They provide assistance in transporting, transferring and lifting. They perform cleaning Functions in patient care unit as delegated, and perform selected diagnostic tests.
Provides direct patient care as delegated by RN staff
Monitors and records vital signs
Assists in providing personal hygiene and physical care needs
Accurately measures, records, and reports intake and output
Obtains and records daily weight
Performs blood glucose testing using blood glucose meter
Performs comfort rounds, reporting changes in patient's status promptly to RN
Performs as a sitter or patient care companion when needed
Assists in the admission, transfer and discharge process
Delivers specimens, picks up medications and other items
Acts as receptionist for unit; has limited use of the hospital information systems according to hospital policy dependent on the need of unit
Checks and documents refrigerator temperatures as delegated, reporting variances to appropriate personnel
Updates assigned bed status
Answers call lights and telephone
Keeps patient environment clean, keeps hallways clear of obstruction, reports safety issues and broken equipment appropriately, and adheres to patient safety precautions
Communicates with patient's family, physicians, and unit personnel and peers in an accurate, courteous, and professional manner
