In the 30-bed PICU at Children's Minnesota Minneapolis Campus, our interdisciplinary team of intensivists, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, social workers and other professionals are dedicated to the advanced care of children with life- threatening critical diagnoses. We specialize in caring for children with a wide variety of acute and chronic illnesses, including those with respiratory failure, neurological insults, complex post-operative recovery from extensive surgery, severe infections, fluid imbalances and multi-system organ failure. Children's Minneapolis is an ACS Level I trauma center and our PICU cares for children who have experienced a wide range of traumatic events. Many of our patients require assisted ventilation. We also utilize extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) when needed. Our patient population requires complex care, including hemodynamic monitoring, critical medication management, maintenance of systemic perfusion and management of organ failure. Our team balances a highly technical skill set with a family-centered approach. Department Overview: Our Minneapolis neonatal float team is an integral part of nursing services provided within our neonatal community - from the special care nursery up through our level III and level IV neonatal intensive care units. Team members are able to apply specific skills sets to these departments and provide additional resources as needs are identified. The team is a valuable resource for the entire neonatal hospital system. Our nursing care team consists of registered nurses, clinical support associates and unit operations coordinators. RNs hired into this area would support our Special Care Nursery, Infant Care Center, and Neonatal Intensive Care units. The neonatal float team offers the flexibility of working in different units while learning new skills every day. We value teamwork, open communication, safety, and respect. As part of the largest Mother Baby program in the state, we work closely with our specialized interdisciplinary team of professionals dedicated to the care of infants with life-changing diagnoses. In this unit, we care for patients along their continuum of recovery from neonatal intensive care to recovery of infants after surgery, including caring for changing physical and emotional needs, as we prepare the patient and the family to return home. Our complex patient population requires cardio-respiratory monitoring, airway preservation including ventilated tracheostomy patients, medication management of complex gastro-intestinal findings including short bowel and complex feeding plans, as well as management of central lines.
