Responsibilities Functions as a Warehouse Worker Foreman in the warehouse, commissary and clothing issue/laundry operations and is responsible for work on a rotational basis that includes warehouse, commissary and clothing issue/laundry operations at a Federal Bureau of Prisons’ facility. Supervises inmate workers who are responsible for receiving, storing, shipment, and issue of a wide variety of supplies, materials, equipment and commodities required in the operation of the facility, as well as, the issuance of inmate clothing and laundering of items for inmates and institutional operations such as Health Services or Food Service. Responsible for the inventory control of materials for the institution which consists of receipt, cataloging, stocking, and issuing of all incoming materials from outside sources. Determines sequences for loading material and organizing incoming shipments for maximum space utilization, safety considerations, and damage protection. Maintains adequate shipping and receiving documents and inventory documentation, using both manual procedures and automated data processing systems, so as to maintain a system of perpetual inventory accountability for all items that pass through or remain under incumbent’s control. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staffs correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis. The Opportunity: Our team in Batavia is looking for an exceptional person to join their warehouse team as a Material Handler! Warehouse material handlers' essential duties are to perform various tasks in the warehouse such as but not limited to:

  • Inbound: Unload trucks, trailers, and freight containers, count products, and compare to the manifest to check all shipments for damage, infestation, or production code dates. Material handlers must report shortages, damages, and Mis-shipments on appropriate forms. They must also be able to sign for inbound shipments when necessary. All inbound shipments are moved safely to storage locations to be efficiently stacked as store merchandise.
  • Order Picking: Ensure that the correct product number, quantity, and type (lot, batch, serial number) are picked. Transport orders to shipping locations or delivery platforms with material handling equipment, such as, but not limited to, fork trucks, cherry pickers, or pallet jacks. Materials handlers must be able to label, stencil, tag, mark orders, band, bundle, wrap, overpack, and palletize as required.
  • Outbound: Compare quantity, labeling, and address with order to ensure outgoing shipments are complete and correct. Assign signatures for outbound shipments, as necessary. Efficiently move products, cartons, and pallets into trailers, rail cars, or containers.
  • Equipment: Maintain equipment in a neat, clean, and orderly fashion. Operate equipment safely and efficiently. Comply with company standards and OSHA requirements.
  • Inventory: Keep accurate records and reports. Assist in physical inventories and cycle counts. Ensure proper stock rotation. May key inventory adjustments in computer.
  • Other Duties: Repack or re-box cases per customer instructions. Repair and consolidate damaged goods as required. Operate a shrink-wrap machine. Charge the forklift battery as needed; stack and separate good from bad pallets when necessary; clean railcars, trailers, truck docks, and bays as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY: The person who occupies this position is responsible for transporting materials from finishing department to shipping department and having these materials stretch wrapped. Material Handlersunderstand and align business operations and Finishing Department as he/she executes their role to exceed customer expectations and align with GPI business, cultural, financial and operational objectives.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

  • Responsible for retrieving loaded pallets of flat cartons from finishing area and transporting them (by use of forklift) to shipping area. Jeep Driver spends approximately 95% of working shift on forklift.

  • Responsible for wrapping loaded pallets with plastic wrap: Material Handler places load onto "shrink wrapping" machinery and attaches beginning of wrap to load. Machinery automatically wraps load.

  • Responsible for loading finished materials onto outgoing trucks by use of forklift.

  • Responsible for performing daily preventive maintenance duties on forklift.

  • Material Handler must go through check list (check water and oil level, air blow engine, check brake, etc.) on daily basis. Jeep Driver is also responsible for refilling empty propane tanks.

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS:

  • Manufacturing experience preferred

  • Must speak, read and write in English.

  • Must be flexible: Able to work other shifts, overtime and Saturdays when needed.

  • Must be able to operate forklift.

EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Schedules are up to 8 or 12-hour shifts on alternate days with rotating weekends off. However, employees must have the ability to work alternate schedules and overtime that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.

  • Some Departments/Jobs may run a M-F 8-hour Shift Schedule.

  • Must be willing and able to work overtime.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sitting or standing, depending on changing job assignment, for extended periods.

  • Awkward and/or repetitive movements.

  • Physical and visual activities that are commonly associated* with the performance of the functions of this job:

  • Position is associated with walking, lifting (propane tanks, cases of cartons, etc.), carrying (propane tanks), and sitting (in forklift).

  • Physical demands commonly associated* with the performance of the functions of this job:

  • Person must have physical coordination to operate forklift. Person is operating forklift approximately 95% of working shift.

  • Material Handler is continually getting on and off forklift (getting off lift to start wrapping machine; getting on lift to move materials, etc.,) throughout working shift.

  • Handler must be able to lift propane tank (weighing approximately 50 - 60 lbs.) and carry tank to area to be filled. This activity is performed approximately every work shift.

  • Inside Conditions, extremes of heat (summer), humidity, noise (from forklift and production machinery).

Safe Quality Food Responsibilities for all employees:

  • Follow all Plant rules, Processes, Hygiene, and Allergens procedures, related to production of Safe Quality Foods.

  • Report to person of authority to record any potentially unsafe conditions which may result in unsafe foods or noncompliance to SQF related procedures.

  • Participate in SQF Root Cause and Corrective Actions (from customer complaints, SQF audits, validation, and verification activities) as required.

  • Follow all procedures related to producing Safe Quality Foods (SQF).

  • Report any potentially unsafe SQF conditions or customer complaints to a person of authority to record and/or correct the situation.
