Job Description
The primary role of the Life Science Connect Acquisitions Editor is the recruitment of guest content contributors with expertise in the development of RNA-based drugs. Acquisitions editors are responsible for establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with these experts—relationships that yield high-value content for our readers. The Acquisitions Editor will be responsible for managing, editing, optimizing, and tagging contributed content for publication. This position will be at our Erie, PA location.
Essential Job Duties
- Grow and manage our network of content contributors for AdvancingRNA.com
- Work with editorial and business development teams to determine target article topics, contributor profiles, and appropriate volume of coverage by topic.
- Identify and connect with industry experts — through direct outreach (email/phone), social media, industry events, PR firms, etc. — who fit the target contributor profiles and are capable of writing original articles on target topics, developing infographics, producing written or audio/video-recorded Q&As, or other content formats deemed valuable.
- Guide each contributor through the process of determining the highest value content topic, angle, and scope for the Advancing RNA audience.
- Oversee the publication schedule of each contributed piece, setting appropriate deadlines for contributors, ensuring they submit all necessary materials (abstract/outline, draft, bio, headshot, images, etc.) on time, and submitting work orders for tagging and publication.
- Edit each contributed article for grammar, adherence with our editorial style guide, general readability, SEO optimization, and reader engagement (e.g., attention-grabbing headlines).
- Select a feature graphic for each article from our stock image catalog.
- Grow relationships with contributors through regular interaction (email, social media, phone, etc.) to encourage their continued participation.
- Optimize AdvancingRNA.com newsletters.
- Schedule all articles written by contributors for promotion in relevant newsletters.
- Review newsletter proofs, ensuring all content is relevant, recent, grammatically correct, and optimized for performance (e.g. headline and summary check).
- Promote contributed content to ensure engagement by target reader personas via:
- Social media — directly and via Product Pages on LinkedIn.
- Partner referrals.
- Direct email messages to relevant groups, contacts, or agencies.
- Merchandising of content across all relevant LSC sites and throughout each site in relevant buckets and centers.
- Support additional editorial and engagement initiatives for LSC products.
- Leverage network of contributors for other initiatives that require SMEs (e.g. webinars and expo participants, editorial interview subjects).
- Select articles to be aggregated into topic-specific eBooks.
- Actively contribute in weekly editorial staff meetings.
- 3+ or more years of professional work experience in editorial or communications.
- Technical aptitude (the ability to understand and communicate technical concepts).
- Professional presentation.
- Willingness to interact with the business development team.
- Business acumen.
- Proven examples of hardiness, initiative, critical thinking, and acting with urgency.
- Capable of establishing and maintaining professional relationships.
- Strong written and oral communication (including demonstrated phone skills).
- Demonstrated persuasion, influence.
- Proficient use of: Word, Excel, E-mail, the Internet.
- Experience hitting goals and deadlines.
- Five or more years of professional work experience in media/communications.
- Experience in the life sciences industry, ideally related to RNA-based therapeutics.
- Ability to travel up to 10 days per year.

The Content Acquisition Operations Team serves our product and content teams and the corporation in the development of all Cengage Group products. Our primary mission is to accelerate the speed to market of Cengage products by developing detailed licensing plans, conducting content analysis, and collaborating with partners to lead acquisition efforts. This is in addition to maintaining compliance with legal policy, through excellence in planning, efficiency in management, and effective collaboration with key contributors.

Using extensive research and analysis to locate third-party content when applicable and cost-effective items if available

Identify free and low-cost opportunities for licensing

Exhibits the personality, drive, and abilities to steer authors, content managers, and product teams toward enriching content selection choices during the content creation process

Develops in-depth knowledge of team product lines and are subject matter authority on team content, maintains relationships with internal and external teams and authors, and frequently used rights holders within the product line

Keep up to date on current Copyright Law and industry changes, such as key developments and/or trends in the field, potential sources and topics, and marketing opportunities

Plans, analyzes, and implements project workflows based on content and complexity; Crafts overall licensing plan and strategy for product list

Ability to identify workflow issues, source issues/concerns, or team member issues that can potentially jeopardize project schedules, before and during the development phase of projects.

Uses strategy and critical thinking, resolves issues of various nature while ensuring all project goals and legal compliance are met.

Analyze new and reuse content requests and product logs to effectively identify appropriate rights profiles, legal risks, I&D initiatives, budget plans, licensing plans, and schedule concerns

The Content Acquisition Operations Team serves our product and content teams and the corporation in the development of all Cengage Group products. Our primary mission is to accelerate the speed to market of Cengage products by developing detailed licensing plans, conducting content analysis, and collaborating with partners to lead acquisition efforts. Proactively provides guidance to Product Management and Content Development teams regarding content and acquisition activities

Using extensive research and analysis to locate third-party content when applicable and cost-effective items if available

Identify free and low-cost opportunities for licensing

Exhibits the personality, drive, and abilities to steer authors, content managers, and product teams toward enriching content selection choices during the content creation process

Develops in-depth knowledge of team product lines and are subject matter authority on team content, maintains relationships with internal and external teams and authors, and frequently used rights holders within the product line

Keep up to date on current Copyright Law and industry changes, such as key developments and/or trends in the field, potential sources and topics, and marketing opportunities

Plans, analyzes, and implements project workflows based on content and complexity; Crafts overall licensing plan and strategy for product list

Ability to identify workflow issues, source issues/concerns, or team member issues that can potentially jeopardize project schedules, before and during the development phase of projects.

The Content Acquisition Operations Team serves our product and content teams and the corporation in the development of all Cengage Group products. Our primary mission is to accelerate the speed to market of Cengage products by developing detailed licensing plans, conducting content analysis, and collaborating with partners to lead acquisition efforts. This is in addition to maintaining compliance with legal policy, through excellence in planning, efficiency in management, and effective collaboration with key contributors.
What You'll Do Here:

Proactively provides guidance to Product Management and Content Development teams regarding content and acquisition activities

Using extensive research and analysis to locate third-party content when applicable and cost-effective items if available

Identify free and low-cost opportunities for licensing
-
Exhibits the personality, drive, and abilities to steer authors, content managers, and product teams toward enriching content selection choices during the content creation process
-
Develops in-depth knowledge of team product lines and are subject matter authority on team content, maintains relationships with internal and external teams and authors, and frequently used rights holders within the product line

Keep up to date on current Copyright Law and industry changes, such as key developments and/or trends in the field, potential sources and topics, and marketing opportunities
-
Plans, analyzes, and implements project workflows based on content and complexity; Crafts overall licensing plan and strategy for product list
-
Ability to identify workflow issues, source issues/concerns, or team member issues that can potentially jeopardize project schedules, before and during the development phase of projects.

Uses strategy and critical thinking, resolves issues of various nature while ensuring all project goals and legal compliance are met.

Analyze new and reuse content requests and product logs to effectively identify appropriate rights profiles, legal risks, I&D initiatives, budget plans, licensing plans, and schedule concerns

Review rights contracts for rights profile compliance, work with Legal Counsel as needed
-
Demonstrates creative problem-solving and implements creative solutions
-
Actively participates in planning and launch meetings; leads content acquisition work with team partners and Rights & Permissions vendor
-
Drive thoughtful content decisions by guiding content teams, authors, and product teams to appropriate content source options
-
Ability to engage in sophisticated rights conversations and source management with successful outcomes
-
Provides post-analysis as needed to identify issues and develop revision recommendations
-
Works with Vendor Project Manager to ensure timely project close and delivery of rights
-
Provide partner and author training as required on content selection, process, IP rights, etc.

Lead multiple projects and partners at a time throughout the project life cycle while ensuring project goals, schedule, and budget are met while ensuring Cengage rights compliance
-
Ability to work independently and pivot quickly and conclusively when to meet project needs

Makes recommendations around process and systems improvement
Skills You'll Need Here:

Bachelor's degree/equivalent work experience

Shown experience in risk analysis and interpretation of IP

Strong understanding of content acquisition, clearance processes, corporate copyright policy, and strategy, including knowledge of fair use and public domain parameters

Ability to communicate in a variety of styles and settings clearly and effectively

Exhibits customer service and leadership skills to persuade and steer teams toward desired outcomes

Ability to analyze sophisticated data and project information and make recommendations that align with both legal requirements and business need
