+ Build, maintain, and own a trusted-advisor relationship with C-suite leaders of complex partners to achieve strategic alignment and drive growth. **Job Summary**
Come be a part of Red Hat's charge to democratize AI with open source! Red Hat's Global Engineering Team is looking for a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to join our newly formed AI Engineering organization. This role will be located within the AI Innovation team, which conducts customer- and science-driven research to drive innovation for Red Hat's customers. The team focuses on a pattern of "research → open-source software → product" as the way we operate our engineering work. This role will be focused on architecting and building the core logic and enhancements for our model fine-tuning and post-training libraries.
In this role, you will work directly with research scientists and open source AI communities to design, build, and improve implementations of novel training methods, ranging from SFT, continual learning, and offline preference tuning to online reinforcement learning methods like GRPO and RLHF. You will develop working relationships across multiple teams, driving contributions to both upstream open source projects and our internal Training Hub, while providing technical leadership on architecture decisions and implementation strategies.
The ideal candidate will be a highly collaborative individual with a passion for working on complex ML projects in an open organization where contributions are valued and expected from all levels. As this is a fast-moving area of opportunity for Red Hat, the ability to communicate productively and effectively with team members and stakeholders is critical. Success in this role would be delivering robust, scalable training libraries that bridge cutting-edge research with production needs while establishing technical standards and best practices.

Architect and develop core libraries for various model post-training methods and innovations.
Lead technical design decisions for training infrastructure and algorithm implementations.
Work directly on upstream, open source projects and engage with community needs and contributions.
Drive core post-training algorithm research and engineering, introducing new methods both to community efforts and our own Training Hub.
Understand and adapt novel architectures and techniques to work with various post-training algorithms, across distributed training frameworks.
Optimize, enhance, and improve robustness and usability of both existing and in-flight projects, working closely with researchers to validate prototype logic.
Maintain and expand library feature pool, and address core algorithm bugs and blockers.
Collaborate with software engineers on interface and testing designs, establishing architectural patterns and standards.
Lead code reviews and establish best practices within the engineering team.
Document system designs, processes, and model performance for transparency and future reference.
Report on project status, challenges, and results to stakeholders.
Serve as a technical lead for training and customization components, providing guidance to build knowledge and capabilities within the team.
**What you will bring**

The newly-created Data Science Platform (DSP) supports and advances the research objectives of Rockefeller Universitys faculty and staff by providing training and consultative support in the field of data science especially in the areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML/AI) and deep learning (DL).
Overview
Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, and working primarily with Faculty, Research Staff, Postdoctoral Fellows, and Graduate Students, the Director leads a team of seven (7) Machine Learning Engineers that identify and work closely with internal and external resources to determine how to most effectively support University researchers' needs for applying ML/AI and/or other quantitative approaches to new and existing data sets across a wide variety of disciplines, including structural biology, imaging, microscopy, "omics," neuroscience, immunology/virology, and the physical sciences. The position also includes leadership of the Fisher Center AI Platform, which seeks to apply AI/ML techniques to understand the causes of Alzheimer's disease, improve the care of people living with it, and find a cure.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
+ Consult on experimental design and best usage, with emphasis on best practices for proper analysis and reproducibility;
+ Recruit and manage Data Science Platform staff members;
+ Develop and lead training/classes in ML/AI fundamentals and techniques; adapt and evolve training to best serve the changing needs of the research community;
+ Identify, improve, and/or create appropriate training data sets for ML/AI projects;

Qualifications
**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Ph.D. or equivalent degree in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science, electrical engineering, statistics or a related field.
+ A minimum of ten (10) years of research experience in identifying, formulating and solving biological problems through the application of advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
+ At least two (2) years of leadership experience.
+ A strong publication record in top-tier venues focused on machine learning, artificial intelligence or their domain-specific applications, such as AAAI, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, IJCAI, KDD, ICCV, ECCV, CVPR, EMNLP, ACL, MICCAI, IJCV, TPAMI, TIP, ACM-MM, Nature, Nature Methods, Science and equivalent conferences and journals.

Candidates in the Systems/Data Science/Artificial Intelligence area will perform original research at the interface between chemical engineering modeling/scientific computation and modern Data Science and Machine Learning. Possible efforts include but are not limited to modern design and optimization (e.g. in the role of AI in the transition from automated to autonomous process operations). Creative uses of DSAI in materials/chemicals/process discovery/design, or towards novel computational approaches to atomistic simulations or biological systems modeling are of direct interest.
The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is highly collaborative with an established track record of national leadership and developing new disciplines within chemical and biomolecular engineering. The Department has large, vibrant educational programs at the undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. levels as well as post-doctoral level.
This past year, Johns Hopkins announced a major new investment in Data Science and the exploration of Artificial Intelligence that will be included in a new data science and translation institute, a new state-of-the-art facility and recruitment of 110 new faculty over the next five years. The institute will bring together world-class experts in artificial intelligence, machine learning, applied mathematics, computer engineering, and computer science to fuel data-driven discovery in support of research activities across the institution including within the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering department.
In addition to its role in this initiative, the department is a leader in other major research centers and institutes at Johns Hopkins, including the Ralph O'Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI), the Institute for Nanobiotechnology (INBT), the Advanced Mammalian Biomanufacturing Innovation Center (AMBIC), International Biomanufacturing Network (IBIoNe) MINDS (Mathematical Institute for Data Science), the Maryland Area Research Computing Center (MARCC), the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI).
