Leidos Health Solutions currently has an opening for a **Research Associate II** specializing in **Animal Behavior** working with the Cellular and Immune Based Adjuncts (CIBA) Department at the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio TX.
NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy and conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. Members of the CIBA Department conduct research on stem cell and immune based therapeutics intended to improve warfighter outcomes and survival. We study stem cells from various tissue sources and their secreted factors, such as exosomes and protein secretomes, to promote tissue repair and reduce injury. We also investigate immune modulation strategies to prevent or mitigate tissue and organ damage caused by trauma and hemorrhagic shock.

**The Challenge:**
+ Act as lead for conducting research in small animal behavior to ensure successful execution of projects; provide guidance and training to junior staff
+ Responsible for supporting laboratory-based research applying the latest scientific knowledge towards the solution of a broad range of theoretical and practical problems
+ Assists with administrative tasks, including preparation and revision of Performance Work Statements (PWS), IACUC and IRB protocols, proposals, manuscripts, report and presentation editing and review
+ Routes administrative paperwork related to scientific products
+ Coordinates the implementation of research studies, including regulatory requirements, maintenance of study records and all activities associated with internal and external audits
+ Assists in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies related to research under contract.
+ Aids in market research for equipment and equipment maintenance services requirements related to research under contract
+ Ensures IACUC/IRB requirements are followed
+ Modifies and plans research experiment schedules, procedures, and tests
+ Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures, literature research, or through other means for research projects
+ Assists with the maintenance of a clean and operational lab space
+ Reports on status of research activities
+ Routes administrative paperwork related to scientific products
+ Maintains data and records securely, including the use of an assigned laboratory notebook
+ Oversee and instruct contract personnel on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance
+ Writes and edits material for publication and presentations
**What Sets You Apart:**
+ Hands-on experience conducting animal behavioral assessments, including assays and models in a non-academic (e.g., industry or clinical research) setting
+ Bachelor's degree plus five (5) years' full-time research experience in related field, or master's degree plus two (2) years' full-time research experience in related field
+ Clinical and/or research animal handling experience, including behavioral assessments and surgical procedures
+ Bench-side assay development and laboratory techniques
+ Strong skills in data management and record keeping
+ Current or ability to obtain American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course; American Red Cross CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation); or equivalent. Web based classes do not meet these standards
+ The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level
+ **Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required**

THE POSITION
PASADENA HUMANE is currently hiring Heath Technicians with experience and certifications in animal behavior (IAABC, KPA or CPDT-KA) in our Veterinary Health Department.
We are looking for professionals who learn quickly, have strong interpersonal skills and feel passionate about our mission.
We care for all the pet animals and wildlife entering our shelter. As a Health Technician that specializes in behavior you will partner with veterinarians to address the husbandry, medical and behavioral needs of each animal on its journey to a forever home. You will support the veterinarians in treating behavioral concerns, lowering fear, anxiety, and stress and maximizing opportunities for placement. In addition to partnering with veterinarians, Health Technicians work with multiple other teams, including animal control officers, customer care associates (in adoptions, the animal resource center, the SNiP clinic), and volunteer services, to ensure that animals become available for placement as expediently as possible.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for individuals who are comfortable and have at least 2 years experience working directly with animals in a medical and shelter environment.
You should be a master of organization, comfortable on a learning curve, able to elicit cooperation and offer tangible contributions. You should thrive in a work environment where the pace and tasks change daily and collaboration brings the best results. Our ideal candidate should be experienced in Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive (LIMA) training methods and enrichment plans for shelter animals. Being successful in this position will require a fluent knowledge of behaviors that may lead to aggression.

Purpose of Position: Administer and assist in the development of behavioral modification programs. Lead the behavior team, providing support and guidance in the moment on all aspects of their work including behavior modification and behavior consults. Assist the Behavior Manager in staff scheduling, training, and program development.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the oversight of the day-to-day behavior department tasks and provide direction to behavior technicians when the Manager is off or unavailable.
- Develop and deliver training for staff and volunteers.
- Create educational materials for internal and external use.
- Conduct animal behavior assessment and perform hands-on delivery of animal behavior programs. This includes programs for shelter and owned animals.
- Record assessment and program related information and perform data entry to update animal records.
- Answer patron inquiries and questions regarding animal behavior and provide information resources to address concerns.
- Provide individualized hands-on behavioral training for shelter patrons.
- Participate and potentially lead in the creation of behavior programs, including documentation and program evaluation.
- Assist with the development of SOPs to ensure that they are current, communicated to, and followed by staff and volunteers.
- Monitor, evaluate, and lead initiatives to improve processes and procedures.
- Consult with other departments' staff members to assist with care of shelter animals.
- Schedule and direct department volunteers.
- Schedule staff and monitor productivity to best align people resources.
- Assist in recruiting, hiring, developing, coaching, and counseling staff members.
- Participate in interdepartmental meetings and discussions to support and develop initiatives.
- Perform euthanasia and related tasks.
- Lead the assessment of the behavior of sheltered dogs and cats, including behavior fast track to adoptions and euthanasia decisions for dangerous pets.
- Coordinate daily behavior modification treatments for animals in shelter.
- Coordinate response to the behavior help line, ensuring access to behavior guidance for pet owners in the community.
